Isn't the purpose of this device is so you don't have to be tethered to a computer?

the difference is that, you should not look only at the gadget but the apps as well

there is a little accessory that can read CF or SD cards
i wonder if it can be used as a external storage device as well

Yes, there is but as an optional accessory call iPad Camera Connection Kit. It has 2 adaptors inside that plug to the 30 pins connector port, one for SD card and one for USB port.

But it's so funny! I think it deserves more attention! 
interested to see the IPS LCD screen in person... is there any other similar type of device of a comparable form factor at this price point with an IPS screen...
but quite silly that it requires an adapter to plug in a USB socket... so much for UNIVERSAL serial bus... lose the adapter and good bye USB... and need to get card reader adapter unless one wants to daisy chain USB card reader to USB adapter... more and more add-ons to keep in your bag... is it that difficult or unaesthetic to add a USB socket or two to the body, or even some card readers?...
and at the moment still no effective multi-tasking...

I am not surprised with the results of this poll thus far, just look at how Apple share price slided sharply right after iPad is announced and it closed at $199.29 yesterday a -4.13% dropI own many Apple products, Imac, Mac-mini, a couple of Macbook Pro and a few ipods but this is the first time that Apple has launched something that did not arouse my interest, seriously. Who are the people who will buy this? Maybe students and of course those zealous Apple fanboys
iPhone draws much of the same critisms (missing this or that, just a fad) when it came out, but look where it is now.
I think we should hold our judgement until we have the product on our hands for testing.
