Any Ricoh GX100 user out there?

Strangely, John 3:16, AP and CP all do not have the HN-1 and HN-2 lens hoods in stock. I will need to go down to OP or TK to scour for the hood.

Not sure this question should be posted here. Please let me know if not appropriate.

I tested the GX100, and heard quite loud "creeking" sound (electric static sound) when the camera is trying to focus (sounds like mechanism moving not very smoothly), at the time I pressed the shutter button halfway. Is it normal ? Why is it creating such loud noise ? I tested other brands of similar camera but do not hear such loud sound ? Should I be concern of the quality of the camera in view of such noise ?

I also had concerns over the noise created when focusing but it seems to be the norm in GX100 (I am not sure about other brands/models as I own only this) but I had tested other units at John and they are also producing about the same amount/level of noise. That sort of put my mind to ease although it may be good to hear from fellow GX100 owners here.

yup. i get some creaky mechanical sound on my GX100 (yes, I was poisoned by this thread) whenever the lens tries to focus. when you zoom the lens, there's also a soft motor winding sound. tried other units at 3:16 and MSColor and all are about the same. not sure why ricoh didn't correct it.

nevertheless, this camera is one nifty camera that packs a punch! still experimenting with it. perhaps will take it for some serious shooting this weekend. the S-cont mode that takes 16 shots consecutively and the text mode (gives really funky litho effect) is neat!! love this camera! ;)

even the GRD is like that...its ok one lah dont worry :D

For me, I am still trying very hard to settle on the settings for the My1 and My2 dials ;p There are so many combinations but can only store two customised settings...

Ok, now we should list that as a "feature" ;p

Thanks for all the assurance. By the way, what do you all think of the wide angle lens. Is the pics taken good with the lens ?

Has anyone here used other viewfinders than the VF-1? I do realise there are advantages with the VF-1 as during a recent art performance at Raffles City, I think I may be the only person who is not tilting head backwards in order to look at the LCD and suffer from a neck ache after the shooting :p

I had looked at one which uses the KMZ universal turret finder and I must say it looks real cool. But how useful are these optical viewfinders and what kind of difference do them make?

i was playing with my GX100. it's quite a hassle screwing on the WA adapter, and unscrewing it when you don't need it. was thinking of getting any HA-2 pre-screw in the WA lens, and just click, swap (just like your SLR.) you think this is a good idea? any comments?

If you do foresee that you will need to switch to the wide-conversion lens quite often, it will be a good choice. I had thought of the same thing but I don't find the cost justifiable. If I am get another HA-2 for the DW-6, I will modify the conversion lens like what eawtan had done to allow the fitting of filters.

Just wondering how come we don't have a Ricoh group instead of squeezing into OTHERS and into this thread. Pretty soon this thread is going to get longer and longer! Moderator can consider this request for a Ricoh group?

Am comparing the Ricoh original wide agle lens which gives about 19mm, against the Raynox DCR-6600PRO which will give about 16mm. With the adapter and step up ring to 52mm, it will fit. However, not sure if the Raynox will work well ? Will there be vignetting and if the pics taken will be sharp ?

Hi can I check for advice. Which is a better buy/camera - gX 100, Leica Dlux 3, LX 2?

Thanks. Need a compact camera for easy to reach shoots instead of lugging the DSLR around.

Hi,

I have Leica D-LUX3 and really love it for the 16:9 mode and photo quality.
Was comparing between GRD and D-LUX3 before i bought, the only reason i end up with Leica is GRD don't have stock at that moment.
To be frank, I am still very desperate to get a GRD / GX-100, but since spend $$$ on D-LUX3 already, i guess i will wait for GRD II.

By the way, the things that i don't like about D-LUX3 /LX2 are:
- No dial (it use joystick instead), means slower in making adjustment.
- No option for external optical viewfinder.
- No option for putting on filter.
- NR is too aggresive resulting in lost of details.
- Not so pocketable comparing to GRD / GX-100. (Need a bit bigger pocket, definitely not on jeans.)
- Not neck strip.

What I love:
- Lot of adjustment and manual options, and can be accessible via shortcut (press and hold the joystick), for instance WB, focus point, metering mode etc.
- 16:9 mode, and the color is brilliant. (until the point that i am having "difficulties" in satisfied by 3:2, 4:3 mode), perhaps get used to it.
- RAW (is faster comparing to GRD)

Hope that helps in your decisions.

I only play for a while with GRD and GX-100 in the shop so cannot comment much on it. But basically those in my "don't like" list is provided in GRD/GX-100.

Hi guys ,

what is the standard warranty period for the GX100 ?
Can the quality and the sharpness of the GX100 hold a candle t o t he canon G7 ( of course without the wide angle that is )?

cheers

Warranty wise, it's standard ONE year... however MS color HAD a promotion for THREE years warranty. :)

can't comment on the image quality as i don't own a G7

Cos there isnt enough models in the Ricoh lineup to justify having a forum on it's own? Anyway, Ricoh's emphasis is on quality and not quantity. I reckon by end of the year, at most we will see a R7. Keeping my fingers crossed on GRD2.

Guys who own R4/R6, GRD and GX100? Which one comes out top in macro shots?

Ricoh GX100 is not enough. But with Neat Image Pro, then is will be perfect. In term of color , sharpness, contrast & exposure, it is really damn good. Except the noise la thus you need this noise reduction software.

By the way, with the jpeg/raw from the camera, then use photoshop element then lastly neat image. Extremely good & natural quality picture. Somemore, don't forget that is just a point & shoot camera.

Hi all. hoping someone can comment on this :

Unfortunately, it looks like none of the GX100 owners here possess the DCR-6600PRO to make a comparison. Perhaps it will be possible for you arrange with jim_mcgill to try out the lens before getting it?
