A99

Get an a900. Cheap now on b&s and reliable af.

Hey Rashkae, any insight into how the af works on a99 as compared to a900? It's hard to accept Sony went backwards in af since 30% ligt redirection remains constant, af sensor tech has improved. The only explanation is the af algorithm.

As much as I hate to say this, but a99 doesn't seem to be designed with pros in mind not tat I am but a77 feels better somehow better af wise. Kinda disappointed. Worse case was concurrently i tried mk3 50f1.2 on similar condition it locks on fine.

I think it was a lot simpler, less special tricks, etc. The af on the a900 is nowhere as good as the a99 af-d mode for tracking moving subjects, doesn't have the zone focus, focus peaking, etc. But for spot focus for things like portrait, landscape, runway, etc, it was just a reliable workhorse.

The center AF point on the A900/850 goes down to 0EV whereas on the A99 it goes down to -1EV. From my experience with the A850 it's AF system isn't more sensitive than the one of the A99, both are okay.

Tried a99 over 2 full days.

Given I'm a a77 user tot my learning curve will be quick. But guess not

Likes
- noise control

Dislikes
- AF area is too centered as compared to a77 but I understand this is due to sensor siZe
- Cross sensor doesn't seem as sensitive as a77
- AF shows subject lock but its oof. Hv to focus away then refocus
- half press button feels too soft as compared to a77. Hence missed quite a number of shots due to lock shifting.
- spot af and zone AF speed feels significantly slower and realize wide area AF locks on faster

This is my user feedback hvg been using a77 under similar condition for past 1 yr. had to totally change my af technique to compensate for the AF cross sensor spmewhat slow response

Will I buy?
Need a ff and my shooting workflow is Sony dpdnt. Hope price drops

strange i am an a77 user, sold it, usng a99. i dont find the af being hindrances at all. center af , spot metering , manual mode. lens problem ? dunno. must be i am not sophisticated enough

What is the replacement for DT18-250 when one goes FF?

Tough question... 18-250 * 1.5 = 27-375mm ;) Your best bet is one of those nasty 28-300mm super zooms that degrade your A99 to a compact camera.

ok some correction to pricing..
a99 - SG$3,205
D600 - SG$2,650
6D - SG$2,580

So its about SG$600 difference.
I would probably buy a99 if its SG$3,000.

Too bad 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM is only out next year...
else it'd be a great xmas to get a99 at SG$3,000 + PWP with 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM or even the new flash HVL-F60AM

Where can you get the A99 for $3205 right now? Btw the D6 is called 6D.

Really dpds on shooting conditions. I shoot weddings so am situated in low lighting areas. Was pairing the a99 with sigma 50f1.4. my a77 with sigma 30f1.4 and the af somehow feels snappier. Af in good lighting is excellent. Spot on and responsive

Maybe the non-licensed Sigma lens just works better with the older A77? ;)

OK. When did you get that quote?

U may just be right. But logically the focusing adjustment is really a electrical signal sent to the lens. Hard to imagine if works in some not in some.

In any case will definitely be nailing myself a a99 next yr. waiting for the camera war dust to settle.

This afternoon.
Good to know the price hasn't changed even though the 7% GST absorption promotion is over. lol

You are holding back because of $205?

Well, that's just 10% of the reason.
Haven't been able to secure a cheap 24-70Z 60%
and 50mm F1.4 is not out yet for me to PWP 30%
I still have my F58AM flash which i could reuse, which is good.

those are the main reason why i'm still not moving with Sony.
I could have all those for much cheaper with Canon 6D and lens. :(
Like they say, its not about buying a camera... its about buying a whole system.

The new Carl Zeiss 50/1.4 won't come cheap either.
