1Ds Mk I? If it is so, then it's becos of old technology. 5D is a noiseless beast, really. Using it, loving it ;p

Yupz. That's y i chose the 5D over 1Ds and also for the weight. Going to burn a big hole in my pocket soon.

The hole will be worth it. Trust yourself. And you'll never look back once you get used to the DR and colors of 5D. :bsmilie:

I've tried it before so i know hehe. Hope in 2+ weeks from now there will still be 5D sold on shelves cos i heard from some that it has been discontinued.

Err...I have actually swap 5D for 1DM2....till now have not regreted...with M3 now the color and DR is even better.

Looks like canon is quite slow in coming out with a replacement. Nikon is announcing their D700 soon. Maybe they will be announced together at the same time with Nikon D700?

How sure are we it's real? Some folks have pointed it's unlike Nikon to use colloquial phrases like 'tack sharp', 'lesser cameras' etc.

Anyway, if it's real, then users may hope that Canon will release a better 5D MkII AFTER the announcement of the D700. Remember how the Nikon D3 took the sails out of the 1Ds MkIII? :bsmilie:

I believe they call this tit for tat.

Anyway, I'm quite happy with APS-C... except for the quality of the Canon ultrawide

To each his own camera... I am sure when the replacement comes out, none of the folks here would buy it because it will either be 1) Too expensive 2) Not enough features 3) Not worth an upgrade...blah blah... It happens all the time whenever Canon announces a new camera. Just wait and see.

Snoweagle, I have been following your 5D decision for quite a while now. :) Congrats!

Just an opinion question, as i am planning to go 5D too. What made you buy a 5D now and not wait? It is the usual "if you wait for better model you can wait forever" generic rule, or was there any other factors? I'm especially curious because 5D's been a long time and 5D mk II seems to be *around the corner*, with reasonable guesses.

In fact, I bought a 30D when 40D was just around the corner, reason was the "wait forever" one, and I'm happy about my decision. Is this still valid for 5D (along with the price factor) or did you have any other insights? I'm very interested to know.

If I could answer for myself, it would be the fact that the replacement 5D will NOT be cheap. Now, you can get the current 5D model for a very good price, why not? If it suffices and suits you already, it's good enough.

If the rumoured '2 new bodies at one go' , the 6D and 3D, is released at the same time? If the projected USD pricing is exactly that, the 6D would be a better camera than the 5D for the same money the current 5D is asking for ... or less! I would not mind buying a 5D after its replacement is released, but only if the pricing is proportionate to the features and performance of its replacement. Eg the 5D should be at least USD500 less than the 6D. If Nikon's D700 is really what it is, the 5D WILL be replaced b4 the end of the year.

Replied your PM.

and then they say... "wait for next one".....

but that's not FF. What i'm looking for is FF. ;)

Yes. Get the FF and unleash the potential of your 50L. Then you'll be poisoned to get 85L. FF is the root of all evil

Actually, I have used the full frame....didn't get hooked....You want wide angle, there is always the wide angle lens out there. What the 5D did not keep me hooked is also the "slow" (relative to 30D/40D/1D) respond, and also the limited 9 AF points. To pay $3K for a camera that cannot perform AI servo at the 1D level is a bit disappointing. Actually I will pick the used 1DM2 at the price range. Frankly, what can a 5D do that a 1.3 or 1.6 crop camera can't, in terms of taking a photo? What I shoot most of the time? Landscape and portraits, once in a while Macro.

wah... I think you are threading a very thin line from starting the war of the FF vs APS liao....

Not a war, just sharing my opinion from a person who have used FF, 1.3 and 1.6 crop. Spending $3K on "old" technology may not be wise now. Canon is likely to replace the replacement with much better tech at lower price($4K -$5K). I will gladly pay the extra $1K plus for the rumoured specs of the 5DMII. 1DM3 is selling at about $500-$700 less then 1DM2, if 5DMII follows the same route, it should be release at $4.5K or so. Unless the current 5D drops below $2K(new).....I feel that is it not worth if FF is all that you want. You may find "Oh, this is all there is to full frame?" Many people did tell me that "The perspective is different"....And when I own it....my respond was "Oh so that is all the diff?" And 5D really cannot cut it for sports.

50mm is gd enough for me on FF as it becomes an eye-view lens. I still preferred FF over cropped as i was shooting film for so many years before going digital over 4 years ago.

No la no war. Don't worry. I can perfectly understand what lightning is trying to convey. For him 5D is considered slow but that does not bother me because I might be shooting different things from him, know what I mean? For me I do not need the speed of 20D or even 40D; I shoot mostly landscape and now slowly moving to portraits so I don't use AI Servo often.

Also, what attracted me to FF is the 1:1 crop factor - I do not need to consider the multiplier effect anymore. 24mm is 24mm. Then it also makes it easy for me to select the appropriate shutter speed to meet the requirement of the focal length. For e.g. if I'm shooting 24mm, I just make sure my shutter speed stays above 1/20. But with multiplier effect, I'm just plain lazy to do calculations. Yes, my Maths fail one. Haha ;)

Yes, 50mm on FF is the "classic focal length of the olden film days", aka "WYSIWYG" lens.

Also, images produced by 5D has that "extra pop factor". I donno how to describe, but now I notice that the skin tones of my human models is very smooth and silky look. The DR is really indescribable.

Yes i know, due to the DOF effect of FF sensors, but still cannot match slide films.
