Thank you for your civil and measured reply.
I have never said that the 70-200 and 105 couldn't deliver excellent image quality - or any G lens for that matter.
The points you have brought up - UI, build quality, image quality - don't hold up at the semi-pro and pro spec'd level. Canons (30D and above) now have pretty good UIs and build quality - on par with Nikon.
The flash system, granted isn't as refined as the Nikon system. But many Canon users are able to get by pretty good flash pics with their system. I've tried a friend's Canon based wedding rig and it was pretty good.
So where there is very little difference between the two systems/brands. Now more so with the introduction of G lenses.
If there is no need for what the aperture ring affords one in the Nikon system (access to it's Macro system) and with the UIs (Canon 30D and above), image and build quality of both systems the same. What is it about the Nikon system that these newbies are buying into?? The name? The goodwill?

yeap, right indeed on the technology part, if i hadn't needed it, i wouldn't have spent that much on high end equipment.Tetrode said:No, but I'm inclined to think that you're a tad reliant on technology.
Have you tried shooting a wedding with a couple of Leica M6s and fast lenses instead?
One uses the equipment he/she is comfortable and confident with, not because of status symbol or because it's expensive.jOhO said:yeap, right indeed on the technology part, if i hadn't needed it, i wouldn't have spent that much on high end equipment.
however, when a bride can almost break out in tears of joy looking ar her wedding photos right in front of me, she's not wondering if it was a nikon or a leica that shot the image. but that's another topic altogether.
no i haven't shot, or even TOUCHED a leica b4. if/when i do, i'm sure i'll be intrigued. but until then, status quo.![]()
eh.. hope u not saying i'm not comfortable with my "equipment"??? :embrass: :embrass:espn said:One uses the equipment he/she is comfortable and confident with, not because of status symbol or because it's expensive.
Eeee.. why you think along that line... I won't know if you comfortable with your "equipment" :embrass:jOhO said:eh.. hope u not saying i'm not comfortable with my "equipment"??? :embrass: :embrass:

Nothing about the IQ(Image Quality) being bad, just that compared to the new users, as long as the IQ is good, AF is good, even w/o an aperture ring, they dont miss it. My point is that the G lenses being "crippled" is plain due to your needs not being satisfied and only in your views that it is "crippled".
Differences can go beyond more than just the few points that I have pointed out. Some just find the controls different, some just dont like the wheel. They dont like the shape, the shutter slap etc etc... How people prefer their systems is up to them.
This whole hoohaa is just a matter of differences in needs and opinions.
Tetrode said:That is why advice given here should be made with more consideration for the new user. Not just BBB bec it's expensive so it must be good or bec it is a Nikon that's why or you don't have legacy equipment so you won't miss it. Why is it good? And what is out there that is just as good if not better for a lower price? What if they decide they want to try mf cameras down the road? (I'm sure as a newbie they would want to experiment)
Do they know the limitations of the G lenses?
Do they know what not having the aperture ring means i.e. limiting their access to certain type of equipment in the range?
What do they want to do with the equipment?
Can an older lens be just as good at a lower price?
Do they really need an SB800 when an SB600 will suffice?
Do they really need VR?
