Hmm .. why don't I join photoshoots?
An interesting question.
Saw a few points raised throughout the thread.
1. Mix of the group
I don't think I'll feel uncomfy even if I'm the only girl in a group outing. But I will certainly feel the odd one out once everyone starts conversing in Mandarin/Hokkien. I'm Chinese but can't speak/understand the language and I noticed that yes, most forum goers are male, but also, majority are Chinese.
I'm in this position many times here in Sg (not photo outings). Sometimes I'll jokingly quip, "subtitles! subtitles! Channel 5!"
The channel will switch for 5 mins .. then once they forgot, I'll be left out again. And yes, I do understand it's difficult to change your language if you're used to conversing with that language to certain groups of people. I really try to be understanding but sometimes, it's a bit hard not to feel alienated. (I guess this comes the part where someone will advice me to find my own clique .. nah, no worries, this isn't a complaint, just an input for the thread)

So.
I've signed up with an all-girls group outing. The organiser is really friendly (even when I'm new to the forum), helpful, and replied promptly through PM numerous times. These, to me, deserve extra kudos! Hope I'll get to enjoy the group outing next week. If it's too distracting (coz i'm unused to it), it won't be a waste of time since I'll get to know similar minded enthusiasts
3. What would prevent me from joining?
The possibility of enduring a few hours listening to know-hows blabbing non-stop or those who trash talk. Sorry to say this, but a group of girls has less chances of having these. Not trying to stereotype, just my experience through life.
Kindly please do not misunderstand this as an insult (to the thread, to your collective manhood, etc.). The sentiment is due to the fact that my spare time is very precious. I'm working full time and weekends are extremely valuable. That's why I'm approaching group outing in a careful manner

I'm angmo, so it can be hard to keep up sometimes, particularly when you are in a large group and people forget you don't understand what is going on. It can be a bit tough...

Yup, it's not specifically directed or anything, but we're just forgotten that we can't understand a single word .. hahaha!
Hope you're adjusting well and managed to pick up a word or two here and there
Actually the main reason why i dun join photoshoots is becoz i prefer to take my time to observe wat i'm shooting.
Dun like to be constrained to group outings, when sometimes we can get stuck too long at a subject i dun find interesting or too short for a subject i personally find interesting.
Prefer to go outings with pple i know so that we will accommodate each other more and lingo wise is not a problem. good thing abt photography is that you dun need a pro to be physically there to get great pictures. lots of reading, examining the good pictures and even more practice will achieve just as good results.

Everyone seems to know each other pretty darn well and, since I'm kinda strange at the best of times (Don't you enjoy alarming old "Aunties" on the train, too?), I feel that it'll be a weird situation for everyone concerned. In my experience cliques are tough to join.
Secondly, my experience with most group outings (I haven't been on a ClubSNAP outing so I can't say for you guys) seem to involve my being clueless most of the time due to the fact that most everyone seems to be speaking Mandarin or some other Chinese dialect. Most people try to translate or switch to English for me but I can't help but feel that they wished I wasn't around to disrupt their "flow". This happens to me at work, too! I'd learn the language but I got stuck at "I'm sorry. I don't speak Mandarin.". HYUK!

If you don't mind to mix along with beginner or less experience photogs, follow our
next outing. You won't have any language problem. There are malay, chinese and pinoy as well.

I shooting with oldies manual film camera and lenses... and people either laugh at my equipments or give me a weird /stange look... oh, I have more focus and concentration shooting alone... or with only one or two friends...

Did not join previously because I expect there would be language problem. Mauritian here! Cannot speak chinese! hehe
But will try to join in some other time, if I am free as well.
SHooting alone is fun too, you can move at your own pace. Shooting in groups, well you get to make friends, and learn some skills.

Maybe some of you may like to check out the AG outings
These 2 type of AG outings should suit most here:
Random Outings - usually Azure will be present, though more as a resource person. Very suited for newbies and the average CSer (like me). While the routes are less exotic compared to his AG#s, most of us who join these learn something along the way. And there are usually more places than the AG#, so more people can join. Again, our focus is on taking nice pictures, not on equipment chit-chat.
Learners' Outings - this is something that I'd strongly recommend to the serious newbie. Focused, dedicated learning. Not a classroom environment, but a "live" outdoor shooting conditions. I learnt a lot from his macro LOs, and I believe almost everyone who has attended one of his rare LOs will be full of praise for it. We've all learnt so much. Rare to find such unconditional teachers!
