There was this once I went on a outdoor trip (Not Clupsnap). This small group of rowdy 4 guys before setting up equipments was already rattling about their equipments. One said "Aiyah, dun use L lenses picture sure blur one, waste time only!"

Out came their 10Ds, 1D and others and truckload of white L lenses, transported using their fleet of cars comprising of BMW coupe, Mit EVO, Alfa Romeo and an Audi.

Perhaps these are the snobs who makes outings terrifying for newbies, amateur and thriftys with their less than glorious equipments?

Are you affected by all these? Would you:

1. Set up your $15 tripod next to someone's Manfrotto?
2. Put your $300 P&S digital camera on the tripod next to that fellow's 5D on his Manfrotto?
3. Ask the rowdy ones to keep quiet so that your little camera on its light tripod will not shake?;p

It is not the Equipment, its the person behind the equipment that counts most ...

Busy schedule lah~ I'm eyeing this forum as I wait for a chance to head out into the open to learn from the seniors soon too. Just gotten my personal camera ^.^ Spent quite a sum on it but if you look at the way I handle it you'd probably vomit blood
:p Ganbatte to all!

I'm wondering what the intended purpose of "outings" is?

I can see it as an avenue to get to know people, which I think is a good thing. The downside, of course, is that there may be some existing "cliques" and it may be difficult to break the ice.

But I don't see where the need to take photos or carry cameras around in a group comes from. Taking photos is an individual affair. Someone commented on setting up a cheap tripod next to an expensive one - the issue is not "cheap vs. expensive", but that two people will take virtually identical photos. Where's the room for creativity or individuality in that? Being confined to a group prevents one from finding his/her own vision.

I also like to not draw much attention when taking photos - I want to observe, not disturb. Groups loaded with cameras, tripods, photographers vests etc. stand out like an invasion army in many settings. (Some outings are even planned/described in military terms, which I find quite sick.) Groups also tend to be noisy and inconsiderate, disturbing the environment one would like to photograph in the first place - be it a nature reserve or street scenes. And, paying some attention to the group means drawing attention away from the many things one could see and turn into great photos along the way.

As much as I'd like to get to know some people, photography just isn't a group activity.

when i agreed i do not know to be known as an anti social...as i can mix n clicks very well with strangers and new friends.. but i really do find taking photos should be an individual affair... learning new skills or asking for comments should be an after affair in workshop or in forum like clubsnap..
u can see more things n appreciate things in a different way when u are alone..
thats how i feel ah... pls dun "bombard" me with comments on my comment... as everyone has his own freedom of thoughts.. thats what forum are for. thanks!!

Really? This is amazing!

Hmm... speaking the truth from my point of view..

I will not join any outings though.. Yes its very intresting too.. But some clubsnappers comments and critiques are very CRUDE, BLUNT and worst off all SERCASTIC. Some even give blunt critiques without giving a word of improvement, is like for the sick of saying. Somewhat blunt like being critisize by Simon(one of the Amrician Idol judges). I wun dare to go out with this kind of people who just love to give blunt critiques. I am not refering to every 1 but just 1 or 2 or may be a small handfull. But to the 1 who gave me the most blunt critique in my messages.

any thing can just mail me at lyk_86@hotmail.com

In any groups, there are bound to be one or two "know all" and arrogant ones but that does not mean the whole group is "bad". I will go with an open mind and like any individual, I will return a compliment and return a negative one too. Come on, this is a social thing and we are neither students or soldiers...to be hounded by "seniors". If they can't give good constructive criticism, then they should not be there in the first place. I guess the onus will be on the organiser to weed out the "bad hats" and thus make the outing a pleasant and fruitful one.
I guess it is easier said than done but I won't keep my mouth shut if someone is being rude to me....that's for sure.
Cheers

I believe one should not crictise the locations the outing organiser brings you to. If you do not like the place, do not join it in the first place.:)

I do agree whole heartedly with Clarence & Sharkspin.
Some just comment for the sake of commenting or wanted rather project they know everything, but

1) these people just can't point out to you what went wrong (with your pics)
2) selfish to give a pointer or two (to you)

I am proud of my entry level DSLR, and know I can take better pics than most motormouth.
(After buying books, reading up magazines, add some CS2)
I either leave when I don't feel comfortable or just chio chio the guy with a splatter of hokkien expletives.

I notice there have been some regular clicks, and for people like me who seldom join group outing, it may be easy to break in. (eg. one outing to a ulu island, I asked is it still on, nobody even reply me, carrying on their own gossiping)

Don't feel offended... Sometimes when there is ignorance, you should also ask yourself, did you ask the right thing. Cos ignorance comes from both ways.

One good examples is that I received a PM from a fellow CSer, not to be named, volunteering to be a helper in my most recent shootout. But he ask it in a very funny way, asking me the difference between a volunteer and a helper... then ask what the helper do? Is it helping the models to dress their clothes. For this... I give a total ignore to him. Cos I really don't know how to answer to such request. ;(

You may be looking at, or trying out those that don't fit you. There are good ones around.

There is always the independent AG Outings series. 182 outings over 3+ years, and more than 400 different individuals have joined. We are non-discriminating of equipment type (Cs, Ns, Fs, Ss, KMs, Os, Pas, Pes, Ms, I'd go on...), of gender, and of geography. Can't be that far wrong, can it.

Only thing is that the AGs are always a sell-out. Well, even with weekly sessions. And you'll find a good mix of newcomers, occasional regulars, and good individuals at every outing. Add to that a blend of knowledge of photography with knowledge of the places we go. Can't be beat.

There are some good outings. Hope you find the right ones. Cheers. ;)

Eh, then what's the apprioriate way to ask to join an outing? Not that there are chio bu in the group that I know of, that some tee kor brudders afraid yan tao ppl like me may hog the limelight? I did ask quite humbly if its still on, if yes, then I may proceed to ask whether I can join. I already step out of my comfort zone to seek to join a group where there is definitely a few old kakis. It is people like them do not make "newbies" to come out of their comfort zone and join this outing.

I get better response when I went shooting myself at some spots. Tourists or photographers, making some eye contact, we know there is interest in photography, we just start to chat up.

The eg. you quoted is definitely not a good eg. to relates to my experience. Its just a bugger trying to be funny. I got such PM at times, quoting low prices for stuffs I am selling which I totally ignored.

hehe shy leh ... cant blame the newbies rite;)
hmmm all guys no gals true also haha.

Very new to photography just picked up my dslr. Anyone wiling to introduce some interesting activities?

Love to join photoshoots but:
(1) Don't feel confident enough in front of pros
(2) Don't want to slow down the group
(3) Want to take my time shooting things I find interesting (not rushing to catch up with faster, more expert peers)
(4) Don't want to get embarassed... I'm a newbie using semi-pro equipment. People may laugh at me if they find out I don't know how to use its functions properly (yet).

Still, there are potential advantages to joining photoshoots:
(1) Learning new techniques (if the others care to teach you)
(2) Sounds more enjoyable than just shooting by yourself
(3) You can potentially have new friends

Bottom line, I feel safer shooting by myself or with a few trusted friends who understand my situation. Maybe later will feel more confident to shoot with a group of strangers.

can concentrate so much better when shooting alone.
and don't need to compromise;p

but will be good if it's like a properly organised shooting trip where can learn new stuff:)

If got chio bus i confirm 1st one to sign up. ;p

Wait. This is not SDU's photography sub club ah??

As I read through some of the feedback, I do feel that a group is too much of an attention. I don't mind going out with max. of 2 person (kaki's/friends). Which means 3 people as total. I do like to shoot alone too if not much equipment to lug along.
Sometimes, I do feel some people are just trying to learn as much as they can. But, after they reach a stage or surpass you... They don't give a damn to you anymore. I really don't like that. But, there's always such people around. That's life.
So, I try not to attend such big groups as I shoot. Hope I didn't offence anyone out there. Cheers to all.:)

I think it is also something need to be observed by the newbie also.

First, different people have different level of understanding. However, if it is an guided outing, whoever signed up want to learn from the guide / organizer. Then imagine, another person who also join the outing but kept on asking you instead of the guide, that will retard in your own learning also. Of course, they try to ignore you when the newbie kept on asking. ESPECIALLY on things which they should have done by reading the manual. If it is things in the manual like setups and stuffs like that, it is the person's own responsibility to know his OWN camera first.
