I shoot because I like to shoot, I like to collect slices in time. I shoot for myself unless someone thinks I'm good enough to shoot for them. Which in turn means they like what I shoot.
there's nothing wrong with shooting/creating anything for oneself.
alot of work is done for personal reasons, without a need for an external audience
sometimes the best judge of one's creation is oneself
after all, who can tell better whether you're creating work that is true to yourself, than you yourself?
and there's nothing wrong with showing work that's done for oneself to other people, not everyone shows work to ask for criticism.
Is it necessary for out photographs (art) to communicate?
Does communicating necessitate another person?
First of all, I need to thank Skye Tan's statement in another thread that got me thinking.
Why do I take photograph? Who do I take the photograph for?
I don't have an answer. I will come back to post my thoughts here on this topic, if I can put something coherent together.
What are your thoughts?
....
Art is medium for self expression
I subscribed to your thoughts ...
Art was done for One's pleasure and Expression.
If it was appreciated by others, or others whom shared the same passion and understanding, then it will be worthwhile doing it and sharing it in public, etc.
As for commercialism of the Art, one has to find a balance between creation for the masses and at the same time NOT losing One's vision and believes.
As of right now, I believe yes. If we dont, we might end up like my boss right now. Talking to himself all day, scratching his head and very stressed all the time. But everytime he tries to 'express' himself, most people don't understand him because he talks like a lawyer. Always covering his own ass. LOL! Just kidding mate...To express, do we need someone to express to?

The human interaction is only partly important. Think about this, we are all influenced by someone or something else one way or another. I am inspired by the beauty of the sun and I express my love for it myself by taking a picture and share my joy with others. Whether they like it or not, is just a matter of preference.
Art is not often direct or superflous. It flows like water in a river. Sometimes, a tsunami might happen. Think photography business. ;p
Perhaps skyetan shot a few pictures he thought were great but then nobody he showed to liked them? Hence the self questioning?
PS: I think most people shoot to show off. Without a doubt.
Does it matter if no one likes them? I mean, will you die?
So what was the reason for your thread? I thought I gave you pretty pbvious answers to your standard doubting question? Please enlighten.
I shoot to challenge myself. To create a style so myself anyone can recognise. That, my friend, is why I shoot. Don't know about you though.
