Why do we shoot? Who do we shoot for?

I shoot because I like to shoot, I like to collect slices in time. I shoot for myself unless someone thinks I'm good enough to shoot for them. Which in turn means they like what I shoot. :D

I guess what I am trying to communicate though my photos is that even though the animals might all look similar, each one will have its own personality quirks that make it unique and beautiful. Its just up to me to find that personality and bring it out.

If I'm getting paid it just means that someone just wants to use my time to do the same thing for them.

there's nothing wrong with shooting/creating anything for oneself.
alot of work is done for personal reasons, without a need for an external audience
sometimes the best judge of one's creation is oneself
after all, who can tell better whether you're creating work that is true to yourself, than you yourself?

and there's nothing wrong with showing work that's done for oneself to other people, not everyone shows work to ask for criticism.

I subscribed to your thoughts ...

Art was done for One's pleasure and Expression.

If it was appreciated by others, or others whom shared the same passion and understanding, then it will be worthwhile doing it and sharing it in public, etc.

As for commercialism of the Art, one has to find a balance between creation for the masses and at the same time NOT losing One's vision and believes.

Is it necessary for out photographs (art) to communicate?

Definitely. Even if it is not art it evokes an emotion.See the Clubsnap Critique corner if you want to know what I mean:D

Does communicating necessitate another person?

Not necessarily. But the subject (even inanimate) has to communicate to the photographer in some way. Otherwise why take the photograph?

First of all, I need to thank Skye Tan's statement in another thread that got me thinking.

Why do I take photograph? Who do I take the photograph for?

I don't have an answer. I will come back to post my thoughts here on this topic, if I can put something coherent together.

What are your thoughts?

there is Art and commercial Art

Art is medium for self expression

I shoot because I love cameras, technology, and expensive things. Also when you find that nice picture out of the hundreds you've taken, it feels great!

The key to Enchanted's and Ortega's thoughts is the word "Expression".

To express, we need something to deliver the message, and for us, is medium is photogrpay.
T0 express, we need something to talk about. For alot of us, the subject is the reason of our expression.
To express, do we need someone to express to?

i shoot to remember, shoot for stress relieve:bsmilie:
shoot to set me thinking and for fun
and because its a hobby..

To express, do we need someone to express to?
As of right now, I believe yes. If we dont, we might end up like my boss right now. Talking to himself all day, scratching his head and very stressed all the time. But everytime he tries to 'express' himself, most people don't understand him because he talks like a lawyer. Always covering his own ass. LOL! Just kidding mate...

The human interaction is only partly important. Think about this, we are all influenced by someone or something else one way or another. I am inspired by the beauty of the sun and I express my love for it myself by taking a picture and share my joy with others. Whether they like it or not, is just a matter of preference.

Art is not often direct or superflous. It flows like water in a river. Sometimes, a tsunami might happen. Think photography business. ;p

Not taking any sides yet, because I am still puzzled. Hoever based on hasmee's assersion, then, what Skye Tan said makes sense.

If we create photogrpahs that no one understands/appreciate other than ourselves, are we essentially cocooning ourselves, isolating ourselves with the outside world? Is this healthy?

If we must create something that the masses understand and appreciate, but something that we don't care fore, are we selling out? Is this a good thing?

Of course, neither of my example is correct, both too extreme, but where do we draw the line?

Perhaps skyetan shot a few pictures he thought were great but then nobody he showed to liked them? Hence the self questioning?:D

PS: I think most people shoot to show off. Without a doubt.

Does it matter if no one likes them? I mean, will you die?

Skye Tan had been shooting for a while, rather accomplished, so I doubt that.

Show off? Definately, many do. That is in fact a form of communication, isn't it?

Of course, we most likely will not die if no one likes our picture. For those showing off, it's bad news, I guess.

However, what happens if no one likes the picture is not the reason of my thread.

So what was the reason for your thread? I thought I gave you pretty pbvious answers to your standard doubting question? Please enlighten.

Ok easier for you:

people take pictures to satisfy themselves first (besides $-ripping model shooting businessmen). Then they hope someone like-minded liking them too, or at least pretend to like them.

Of course art is to be shared. That's a pretty dumb thing to doubt.

The reason is for us, photographers, to ask the questions. To reflect on why we shoot and who do we shoot for. Simple. I do not believe we will have a definatve answer, but in the process, we may understand better what drives us to shoot, to create, to do what we do.

Might even make us better photogrpahers, better artists?

I shoot to challenge myself. To create a style so myself anyone can recognise. That, my friend, is why I shoot. Don't know about you though.;)

I have been shooting too damn long to remember why ... ;) :what:

So, based on what you are doing, you are on the side that we need to communicate with our art?

Why do you shoot? you shoot to challenge yourself, to create a style of your own.
Who do you shoot for? Yourself, but then you also shoot for others, because you are creating a style that anyone will recognise.

yes. shoot for myself and others. But then more for myself. I could careless what others think. I can show them but then that's about it. It's their minds against mine from then on. No competition.

Treat it like an exhibition.

anyway, it's boring when everyone understands your work.(as opposed to style).
