30D .....

I'm afraid I've not tried this lens, but I do know a brother using 400D who had focusing issues as well. He has since sent it down to Canon.

Just bought the 85mm F1.8 as I can't afford the F1.2L. The lens has back focus problem and I have to bring back to Canon to calibrate. :( I already change the lens at the shop but still the same problem.

Any bro experience this on the 85mm F1.8 before?

I used to have problem with 10D using this lens before, but after doing a lens focus test, I found that it's how I handle the focusing.

Have you done the focusing test with your lens?

Yup. Tested with numerous shots using the ruler, objects with one at the front and the other at the back, Focus test chart and etc .... Definitely back focus problem .... :(

I have owned the 85mm f1.8 for a year. Very sharp and low light lens. Focus was spot on. I use this lens to shoot presenters in the dark... I am using 30D too... no problem.. I guess it might be an isolated case for u.

More likely to be the body than the lens. ;)

bring both the lens and body to calibrate! Free if it is within warranty ma...

They usually say this to "jiak zhua", or avoid work.

That is absolutely right! :bsmilie:

I have sent stuff (camera and lenses) to CSC several times for repair and calibration. Sometimes, only a single visit is needed. But there were occasions when the same item had to be sent in several times before the issue was addressed. There was once when they tried to convince me my first copy of the 10-22 lens was defect free when it was so OBVIOUS that it had a severe de-centering issue (right side blur). Anyway, after some insistence, they exchanged a new copy for me (purchase less than 1 week) and it was excellent. :D

If they seriously get down to work, they can actually do a pretty good job. The focusing of my 17-55 f/2.8 lens is a prime example: it's now the best lens I own in terms of focusing.

PS: If you are sending your lens for focus calibration (preferably together with your camera), you need to give them VERY specific instructions on you want them to do. From my personal experience, they sometimes test lens focus with the lens stopped down! Then, they tell you there's nothing wrong. Sigh...

My choice would be EF 85mm F1.2L USM. Great results with FF.

Wow.. very good exposure... can share how you take it... did you use other lightings?

The shot of my little 2 years, 2 month old son who refuses to sit still.

From where I am, there is a main light using the soft box at my right (can see from the eyes) and one of my left for the filler (think it is 2.5 stops lower). One behind my son for the hairlight and one that is very low powered for the background (may be a little too lower powered).

One more:

If I may say so, I feel the hair light abit too strong already? But good examples of portraits :D I can learn alot from you.

No home studio yet  as I have not decided on where to put the equipment (probably in one room which is the size of CP main shop and will need renovation). So I rented one for 2 hours.

arh.. I see.. btw.. I am just wondering.. since you shoot studio, you don't really need a 85f1.2L cos you will be using smaller aperture most of the time with studio lights. And a 85L is $3k.. why not a 85f1.8 which is only $600?

I actually prefer outdoor and 1.2 is sure good for low light :).
