Just got the 50/1.8 abt 7hrs ago for $199. Seems to be quite sharp at F1.8 and very sharp from F2 onwards. Infact, IQ is similar to the more expensive 50/1.4...Worth every penny...
BTW, for those who do not own and bash this lens saying it's better to buy Min50/1.7 or Sony50/1.4 as they are FF...I can only comment that for less than half the price (compared to 1.4) and with warranty (compared to 1.7), these are already 2 very good reasons to buy 50/1.8 as long as you still can't afford to go FF...
Sony is trying to make photography affordable to the mass, so do not discreminate the not so rich people...
Actually i did a wedding shoot using totally 50mm f1.4.
I only brought the 50mm and body itself. Didnt bring along my external flash. So shoot everything with manual. And turns out great. To me 50mm really did a good job for event. think of buying 30mm and 85mm or 135mm....But 50mm still my walk about lens...![]()
Did you have to take group shots with the 50mm? I'll be interested to find out how you managed it with the 50mm...
Some people just don't get it.
It is NOT a matter of whether it is FF or not. It is about the F-O-C-A-L length and how useful a 75mm (equiv) lens would be for general use. But of course, to each his own, and if you like it, then good for you. Am I not entitled to my own opinion, too?
So who's discriminating against whom? Sounds more like a self-imposed inferiority complex to me.
whats wrong with the 50mm focal length?
in my opinion, its decent enough for potraitures.. esp at f1.4 or f1.8. Had a 50mm f2.8 and it was wonderful. Great for close up potraits.
Same here..how did you do it?
Stand really really far??

Stand really really far??
Just a personal preference I believe. Some like long, some like wide and some like ones in between. I used to really like my 50/1.7 when I first got it, but the more I shoot with it, the more I dislike the focal length. Personal preference, as I've said.
Hi, sorry for the late reply of answering those qs.
Not that far, its about 5-6m away from the stage.
Its a malay wedding so as you know malay weddings use to have this place where family members gather at the stage and take the pic with the newly wed couple. And before the stage was the long red carpet.
And i have all those empty space in between me and the stage where they will take place for group photo.
So taking group pictures for malay wedding shouldnt have much problems. Just got to imagine they are in a studio going around the same place but its not that small place, you got plenty of space. And further more, before the day, i recce the place of shooting.
And actually i do bring along some other lenses...and 2 external flash(for stand by in-case might need it), but end up, i feel comfortable shooting with 50mm and fully manual. So all pictures was produce from the 50mm with A200. FF, wait for sponsor 1st. ;p
That means you're the main photographer lar... cos having a cluster of people all wanting to be wedding photographers in front of you can be quite annoying when you have to stand so far to take the picture... 5-6 m is equivalent to the distance of one SBS Superbus...
FF only for the rich???
Hmmmm.....just less than 10 years ago we are talking about DSLR are for the richIt's a short term or long term planning if u ask me on which lens format to go for.
10 years ago, DSLR is for rich. Now seems like more people are having DSLR even teenagers nowadays do have it already. That why i really hope to go into digital medium format in future soon. But digital medium format need another skill just for handling it and it is very ex. Still playing around with some of my friends medium format and i like the shutter sound, like superb crispy. And wishing Sony going into medium format is another dream. :bsmilie:
Buying an MF digital camera plus one lens will cost you about one year's salary or thereabouts...![]()
Yea, i know that. Thats why if DSLR soo common nowadays, who know in 10 years time from now, MF digital camera will be the price of an FF camera. :bsmilie:
I think the cheapest in singapore is about $40k plus...
U got it wrong, H3DII is around $30K........
Anyway if u really keen in MF, u can always start on the 120mm with digital back which cost less $10K with a lensBut MF is NOT meant for event if u ask me.......even with digital currently as it just not cost effective and u'll need better PC for processing which is $$ again.
Yeah, MF is all about details.....When everyone thinks A900 + CZ is sharp, kindly step into the world of MF haha.
