well said ouverture,
In my opinion the FF 50mm 1.8 that is available for other makes is reall good and cheap for its low light capability.
like what bro synapseman said 50mm crop factor lens(DT) is really great marketing strategy..
to have a DT lens that gives the same field of view as 50mm on FF, the DT lens should be between 30-35mm.. eg sigma 30 1.4, nikon's 35 1.8. that is why these lenses is very sought after in CS Classified although its a crop factor lens.
As for the sony's 50mm DT its a bit on the tele end on crop factor and it can only be used on grop factor cameras.
but this is not to say that the 50mm DT lens is not worth to buy cause although being a DT lens slightly on the tele side on crop factor camera, credit have to be given for its low light capabilities f1.8. and it will be the cheapest prime(i guess unless sony crazily price it above the 50 1.4)be it FF/crop below an aperture of f2. so its sony 50 1.8 vs 50.1.4 vs 35 1.4 vs sigma 30 1.4 vs 50 1.4 and a slew others sigmas 24 1.8, 28 1.8 if i'm not wrong.
And you just need to search flickr, pbase many other popular photo sites to know that there great portraiture taken with primes from 35mm or lesser to 200mm and more. no hard rules to say neither here nor there
end of the day its what drives you and what is worth to you and what is affordable to you.
just my 2 cents
I would go for the 50mm f1.7 anytime given it's solid build as compared to the others which are plasticky.
