Last I heard the guy was working for a company that built firewall appliances - the figured that VMS would be a safe base for their firewall as no one knows how to hack it anymore. (And it was a pretty secure design to start with...).
Tru64 is now offically 'obsolete'. HP recently announced they are ceasing all development on it and concentrating on their (inferiour) HPUX unix. Got to wonder what they bought Compaq (Dec) for in the first place....
Same as they have the 'first' 64bit desktop computer. Creative interpretation. In terms of value, Sun and HP probably move more. In installed base, i've seen it said several times that there are more Linux boxes out there - only Linux installations and 'sales' don't match as Linux itself is free and there are multiple vendors. And thats counting Linux servers, not just desktops. But then Apple won't be seperating server and desktop sales in their claims either.oeyvind said:

The Multia was a complete flop, and DEC's 64bit desktop aspirations faded away.
(The machines were too slow. 64bit machines are slower, the G5 has the advantage of modern high speed memory technology to make up for it that the Multia with it's 21066 AXP chip didn't 10 years ago)
And it cost em a fortune... The previous 'cluster' at the top of the pile was Linux boxes on Alpha CPU's.
I'm sure Apple chipped in the price of that Virgina Tech effor, just to get some 'street cred', in the high end computing sector.
Based on retail prices they probably would have got far more bang for their buck using AMD Opteron machines running Linux and Bewoulf.
I like the G5 Macs and the latest version of OSX. I just get annoyed at Apple's marketing lies about it, and people repeating them...
I have to support a network with both Macs and Windows PCs as clients. The Macs are a whole lot less trouble.
(At least now Apple have stopped messing with the OSX UI and fixed the worst of the networking bugs, they are less trouble..)

Useful if you need to run several OS's to do 'regression testing' of software. Have a few 'virtual' machines to run your testing with.
Having valid licences for that OS collection is probably more of a callenge. Just 'cause you can't buy it any more doesn't mean it's now 'free'.
