If I were carrying a bowl of hot soup noodles and have to look for a seat, I would. I will not use the tissue paper method.

Much has already been said about the negatives of the tissue method so its hardly worth dragging it out by repeeating it again after such a long time when this thread is now being revived again.

If the earlier inconsiderate act is not done, the later act of taking the tissue away will not occur. The first inconsiderate act affects multiple parties, whereas the second alledged inconsiderate act merely affects the person who started it in the first place. I don't see it as being inconsiderate - more of a way to deal with the first inconsiderate act.

It doesn't really matter, those who wish to continue putting tissue papers can do so, and those who wish to take it away can do so as well. Since those who put tissues think they can enforce such a system of reservation, then others can also be entitled to free tissue paper and free seats.

i think there is a difference in cultural background and upbringing that sees a different viewpoint. just think of you carrying a bowl of hot soup noodles and having to look for a seat... you may think that those who support it is inconsiderate. but similarly i regard the other party who took the seats despite already knowing someone is there earlier not just inconsiderate and rude, but utterly a bully.

not too long ago, a few young british tourists took a rickshaw in sg and laughs at how slow the 70+ old man is slogging his way carrying all three on the same rickshaw, jumped off the rickshaw half way and took a cab instead. there seems an allerged uncertain part of them not paying or paying only a partial sum (which later on is affirmed of paying a partial sum becos they think the service is not up to standard). they videoed it and put on the internet, only to bring up the wrath of many angry singaporeans. on the other hand, many british on their forum thinks otherwise of the response of the singaporeans, thinking that the rickshaw pricing is a rip off, that it is singapore fault of poor welfare that an old man have to work while still so old, and that at such rip off and so slow, the service doesn't worth that price and they are in the right of not paying full or not paying at all.... while admitting to some insensitive parts of the young drunk guys, though put as only minor... that's actually illustrate how different the viewpoints are between different cultures (taken into consideration of differences in the "sides of the story").

it is later said that at one point of time, the rickshaw driver, who knows little of english, had once move in front and pulled open one of the guy's wallet, of which the westerner forumers are very taken aback. and while i think most would think the act is very rude, i can empathise, though not agree, with the old driver coming from his cultural background and in the unexpectedly rare situation that he comes across becos it is his first encounter after decades of working in this job.

i seldom bring tissue papers and have never ever use the tissue paper packet to take a seat, and is among many of those "disadvantaged" guys, so there is no conflict of interest, but i have seen such practices (though not as prevalent) decades ago and know where it is coming from. i'm aware of your proficiency in a debate, but i only wish to highlight there is a difference in viewpoints. instead of labelling so fast, certainly more can be said in discussion. in the first place, why is it considered inconsiderate? is it becos some people do not carry tissue papers or are unwilling to do so of what they perceived to be somewhat ungracious, but being so render them at a losing end of not finding a seat? i can understand why some ppl dun like the practice, but i'm still hard pressed for the reason of it being considered inconsiderate. i see it more as of intolerance. maybe you can share your viewpoint on this.

Agree with you bro. If the tissue practice is not used, we people wouldn't need to look for individual seats with hot soup noodles in our hands right? :)

sounds good ;p

was at marina square food court last weekday, during the lunch hour. 80% if not all ladies use packets of tissue paper to reserve their seats. though many would like to say they dont practice this or dont support this. i wonder how many actually walk the talk, or they just talk the talk.

i have never used tissue to reserve seats. also never tried using the "free" tissue.

i see. guess we won't get to agree on any middle ground. but maybe i would just have my last say.

i have read through the thread some time before and don't see any good reason of calling it inconsiderate. although you feel that the "2nd inconsiderate act" is just in response to the "1st inconsiderate act", i would just feel the "1st inconsiderate act" did not take a seat already taken, while the "2nd inconsiderate act" is a directly or indirectly confrontational act. it is not as if these guys went shopping or something, just buying food, so i really cannot see the element of inconsideration. an inconsiderate act would be taking something and not using it, thereby depriving others of the chance to use it, and although you may argue that while the guys are buying food, they are not using it. but having a guy to sit down while waiting for his 5 other friends on the table is the same as not using it, since no one is eating in that time frame also, so would that be an inconsiderate act too, or would leaving your 6-7 shopping bags there an inconsiderate act too, since there is equally no eating for the same time frame. they may seem very different situations, but the same reason to quote the first being inconsiderate, extends to all others. and whether it is a tissue or a bag, they means the same thing, knowing someone is here before me. it will be against my conscience to take or move properties of someone else, or to pretend they are not when i know clearly. i can't verbalise out the words "i thought it is free." when i know it clearly belongs to someone else, when in sg, even getting a paper cup, extra ice and packing will cost you extra money. i'm actually more worried about the confrontational culture that developed nowadays.

so despite of being equally disadvantaged as everyone else who have complained about it, i would still stand for the old practice of the local norm, despite of seeing the unpopular 30% versus that 70% opinion of the younger singaporean generation and the expatriates here. ultimately the core of the problem is that seats are not enough for the demand. i think people blaming each other would not solve that problem, and even mask it. maybe the food court should just have a cinema seat system or even what ikea is practicing, allowing only the number of people that the seating can take to enter. the inadequacy of seats will then becomes very apparent.

or "parking coupon", enter food court, kipitaim, fastfood outlet press coupon issue machine den churn out coupon (deplicates). find seat liao den stick the coupon 1 of the duplicates on the seat, den go buy food. like go polyclinic! :bsmilie:

... dun :flame: or :kok: me if this system is introduced... :sweatsm:

using tissue paper is not good enough, not pro!

heeheehee.... internet leh... you mean you took the poll seriously meh. :bsmilie:

IIRC from some books regarding social survey, the survey can never be a true reflection of the society's practice.

The whole thing is totally ridiculous. If I see this at a table that nobody is at with a packet of tissues I'll just push it away and sit. If people can't be bothered to reserve a table in a civilised manner then there is no point in even acknowledging their "chopping" of the seat.

You know... I've been observing this thing since I participated in this thread... till now, I've yet to see someone with a bowl of hot soup rushing for a seat...:think:

Agree... it's just like which cam brand is better... there are 2 sides to this situation... the one who takes advantage prevailing situation and the one who insist of moral high ground.

Firstly, 2 wrong dosen't make 1 right. The first act merely is a selfish act, the second act (free tissue) can be viewed as stealing. Tho the value of the pack of tissue is "almost" nothing and no one would bring it up... value aside, a wrongful act is still the wrongful act.

define "civilised" reservation in a food court.

to think that people subscribe to such methods are annoying.
To think that people succumb to such practices are more annoying.

If I see a tissue packet on top a table, I'll gladly pick that up and throw it at the nearest bin and there you have it,
a preppy place to sit in :)

the only "civilised" form of reservation I think is by asking someone to seat there. Anythign else, is "cavemen" reservation.

hav you done so before?

Cuz I also no see people wasting "free" tissues before.

Then bear with it. That's life. You wait till your turn. The analogy is the same. If you bring someone to a market, you can ask him to queue for you while you pick some things in order to save time. If you are alone, there's no choice but to queue yourself, no such thing as putting a trolly as a form of reserve or anyhting.

Moral of the storey, never live your life alone :D

well, I don't grab freebies lying around. If it's perfectly clean and unopened, who would mind some tissue spree?

is lunch time now, have you guys get ready to use your tissue paper pack to chop the table??

and usually nothing can make them change their point of view.

so the conclusion is.....don't waste time debating. just do what you want. :bsmilie:
