Ballheads and 3 way heads are built to do different thing. Fair enough if weight is your concern but I advice you to get a head that really suit your needs. If oyu need a 3 way head then obviously, a ballhead is a compromise.

I'm an amateur lah! Talking about need is a bit rich cos it's more like a hobby loh! I am after a highly flexible system. Guess the 3-way is more troublesome to adjust but gives greater flexibility for adjustment whereas the ballhead adjust faster but has some limitations in terms of movement. Still have to go down and stick the camera on top to see what I like.

Frankly I don't see why you need a 3 way head unless you are particular about your "shot to shot composition" like when you need a series of shots to stitch into a panorama. I personally feel a 3 way head is only good for static objects.
It is often a misleading act to advice beginners
that because of their small body size, they should not use
the more heavier tripod.

Be more serious in using the required tools
The tripod is as important if not more
important than the camera in photography.
The more serious you are in pursuing photography
either as a hobby or as a profession, the more serious
you are in paying attention in getting a sturdy and
versatile tripod.
The tripod is one of the most essential tool but sad to say
many beginners are ignorant about its importance.
On a regular Sunday a visit to the Botancial Garden will soon
allow you to witness many photography enthusiasts
carrying good decent cameras but more often than not,
a filmy non sturdy tripod. What a contrast?
It was more fortunate for me to have proper guidance
when I started out in learning photography.
For those who are not fortunate enough to have good
advice, will often land themselves with a three legged
tripod without sufficient height and a plastic quick release plate
that could not hold the camera in place when used in a tilting
position.
Many of my photography buddies started out with just a
simple student tripod viz the Manfrotto 055C or the 055PRO
but soon landed themselves with a carbon fibre unit either
from Gitzo or Manfrotto. I think this is for real when one has
sufficient knowledge about the importance of tripod usage.
The Benbo Trekker or the Manfrotto 190 PRO will be ideal for
those who travel often. Unfortunately these two models do
not have sufficient height for regular outdoor shooting.
If you are tall (5 7) and above, the Manfrotto 475b with
the #229 head can be a good starter kit. At least you know
you dont have to change tripod for the next couple of years.
It is often a misleading act to advice beginners
that because of their small body size, they should not use
the more heavier tripod.
Often, the misleaded ingnorant beginners
will have to buy another better and more sturdier
tripod in no time.
They felt that they have to pay for their ignorant.

At first glance it appears impossible to love
to use the tripod. How is it possible to love
the camera you bought and yet dont love the
tripod that should go with it? Yet that is
exactly what I am trying to say: we must
use the required tools to get the task done.
