Hi guys,

Just to check, which is a better 20mm lens, in terms of distortion and sharpness, thanks!

Nikkor 20mm AIS f/2.8, followed by 20mm AIS f/3.5 and 20mm AI f/4.

I have used all 3.

Best near and far field sharpness is the 20mm f/2.8, not as flare resistant as the f/3.5.

20mm f/3.5 near field is sharpness is very good but far field it sucks. Bokeh as can be seen is only so so.

20mm f/4, about the same performance as the f/3.5.

I use the 20mm f/3.5 as a wide angle lens and also a reversed macro with a PK13 extension ring. Near field it is sharp.

Here are some samples.

Used as a micro lens with PK13 extension ring

As a near field wide angle lens . Note the bokeh is not that pleasing.

I've read good things about the non-AI 20mm UD 3.5; there's a manual focus thread on fredmiranda Nikon sub-forum, great resource for these lenses

Light Machinery and Zichar, thanks for your input.

Nice! Thx for sharing

Nice pics "bullterrier", especially the statue of the cobbler. Thanks for sharing.

very nice shots with the 50 1.2 wide open! amazing. I think i've under-rated it!

Have a Nikon 105mm f2.8 AIS. A pretty sharp lens but only give 1:2 macro. Will need a PN-11 extension tube to get to 1:1. Are there other extension tubes that cost cheaper than a PN-11 and yet provide good IQ? Thanks

I think you will be better off with the PN-11.

The Kenko extension tubes ( sets of 3: 12mm, 20mm, 36mm) are not that cheap, moreover you will need to stack the tubes together to be as equivalent to the PN-11.

The PN-11 has better built quality, all metal built but lacks the electrical contacts.

All extension tubes do not affect image quality as they do not have any optical elements. They are just hollow tubes to extend the lens away from the film / sensor.

If you are comfortable buying off Ebay from Hong Kong and China sellers, there are some extension tubes sets that go real cheap. I mention HK/China sellers because they tend to offer free shipping. But be aware that shipping takes a long time (maybe 3 weeks or so). Ask for a tracking number, sellers typically charge USD 2 ~ 3 for the tracking option

There are also extension tube sets with electronic contacts that are cheaper than the Kenko set. I think these sets are cheaper 'cos the lens mounts are plastic and not metal like the Kenko's. Since you are using AIS lenses, that is not so relevant if you do not intend to use the tubes with AF/AFS/VR lenses

PN-11 is also 52.5mm ... which is the perfect companion piece if you're looking for exactly 1:1
The rest will give you slightly different mag levels

105mm f2.5 AIS...unedited.

single handed shot while my left hand held on to reflector
why didn't think of using the tripod for the camera or light stand for the reflector?
