I've been trying to look for a after-market split-image screen for Nikon D4 but can't seem to find any online or on ebay. Lots of options for D3 though.

Does anyone know if a screen meant for a D3 will be compatible with the D4?

Yes it helps manual focusing. Since the split image prism will show out of focus and in focus much obvious than before.

The original screen from my d300s doesn't have the split image prism markings on it. It's a clear screen.

No it will not affect the auto focus. AF lens will auto focus with no problems.

Not sure how compatible are D3 focusing screen are for D4. You may wanna email these 2 suppliers: Katzeye Optics and focusingscreen.com.

Anyway it's my first foray into studio strobe setup using a single 250w strobe with a reflective dome umbrella and a silver/gold reflector.

If you do not already know, the focusing screen in D4 is similar to a S type focusing screen.

Some folks recommend the 55 f3.5 over 2.8 version. Do check both out.

Can I suggest that you search for the pics on flickr rather than google. Or you can try pbase. Beautiful rendition.

I needed automatic aperture for an event last week so picked up a 50/1.4 AIs instead of my fujinon, heres what it was like

iso 4500, 50/1.4

also, just about this whole set was shot on the 50/1.4 at f4. some were by the 35/2.8 pre ai.

its quite a solid lens, though it seems to lack that something special in the fuji and nikkor 50/1.2s

as for the 55/2.8 macro, i managed to dig this out, but cant seem to find the high res version. was shot on fuji pro160S with an FA

i assume u installed split screen focusing in your d700?

How to shoot events using manual focus? I think must be very fast to pre focus then focus using the split prism method, can't rely on the green dot. And the subject have to pose for a while.

I use a Canon EC-S type screen. its a special matte screen with no split or micro prisms, but its made for precise manual focus with canon's f/1.2 primes. its an amazing screen to use if you dont shoot lenses smaller than F4 on a regular basis (it gets abit dark). so i just need to compose, look at the point i want in focus, focus, and shoot. i don't get 100% keepers, but about 90-95% on static shots and 50% on moving. i've also been shooting manual for 3-4 years now, and the only AF lens i have now is a tokina 17/3.5 so i guess experience helps alot =)

that said, shooting a whole event in MF is not something i would normaly do. in this case, i was asked to shoot a photobooth, and these were candids on the side so it was all 'safe'. honestly though, i was shooting iso 4500/6400, f/1.4 and 1/125, i doubt the AF tracking would have kept up.

I love hexagonal shaped on lights for bokeh this under-rated lens. Some people only love the circular shape. It is also sharp!
