After looking through all the comments etc etc. I changed my mind, just got myself a pre-own D700 and sold my D90. Will be playing with it this weekend and Monday (on leave) ha ha!!!! Yes the issue now is what's the next FX lens to get. I'm holding the 17-35mm and 100mm Micro. What else????
how about some cheap ais lenses?

grats! i did the same last month and never regret. i'm using tamron 28-75mm since my D90, and it serve 90% of my needs. my next target, altho in no hurry, is the tamron 70-200mm.

Good suggestion, probably a 50mm/f1.2 or a 85mm will be a good walk about lens?

Price went up?
Get over it lah. If it's going up now, you either buy it now or you don't buy it. A lot of other people would sell their D700 off when the replacement comes out. Seriously, I don't see the point of joining in the crowd just to get a supposedly cheaper price now, especially when you already have a camera. They can't possibly keep going up, and I doubt the replacement will be like delayed by one year or something. I just don't believe that this is due to shortage, it's more like the people, who speculated that the prices would go up, pushed the price up resulting in a change in supply. If consumers were to agree and not get a D700 now, would the local retailers be able to raise their price? Go figure. Even if there's a rise in price of D700 being imported from other countries, they will not be able to raise the price if that's so, simply because they will not have any business, domestic demand conditions will affect the pricing of certain products, and it is not only determined by the supply factor.
