Wait for D800 or buy D700 now

hmm...also factor in the high inflations, rise of commodity price, oil price, commercial rentals, food price, etc....the only thing never rise is the salary. Not surprise that the high-end stuff will be pricy in the future.

what'd be worse/scarier than much more pricey new gear? it's similar-priced new gear but with inferior parts inside...

So far I've not seen an overall inferior new product than old product in terms of DSLR.

Nikon:
D70 -> D80 -> D90 -> D7000

D200 -> D300 -> D300s

D40 -> D3000 -> D3100

D60 -> D5000 -> D5100

Assume you are not doing cross range comparing, it should still be over upward progression than downwards

Depends on how you see it. In the D70/D100 days, the grip rubber pieces do not loosen and drop off. Nowadays they loosen pretty quickly on the D300, D700 and drop off real fast.

And D3100 no longer has support via IR remote.

At least you are more satisfied in the technology department, didn't know D3100 is the only odd ball for the IR remote. Rubber grip loose is consider wear and tear right? If within warranty, would it be serviceable for free? I am doubting it...

Ya my D700 rubber grip came open and expose some innards, not exactly befitting of a pro/semi pro body. Have to throw protest before Nikon replaced it FOC :(

CAnt be helped. alot of polymers break down under UV light so yeah most of the time u find rubber will become loose etc

im waiting for the d800 so i can get a cheap d700! haha. my d200's still alive and clicking but i really wanna move up to ff. i might just give up waiting soon..

Eh this has never happened to me with my Canon cameras in my 7 years of using them prior to switching to Nikon.

It's something Nikon can't get right for some reason!

Actually I have Nikon friends in the past who lamented to me their rubber fell off their F100s / F5 bodies in the past so this is definitely not a new problem.

I have just spent $130 over the past 1 yr replacing various rubber parts on my D700. I thought maybe I have been too rough with it, until I examined the d700 in the Nikon showroom (go see for yourself) and found - guess what? The hand grip rubber is also falling apart!!

And that was a display unit at Nikon service center which probably never left the office....

But lots of ppl molested it! Well, so far what I was told that it is a common thing. Just hope that yours drops off on the 15th month before warranty expires to get it replace with a new one for free.

Well the F4 one stayed ok, and so did the the grip on F2. The funny thing is that the D70 never got this problem.

I own a D70 before, after about 2 years plus the rubber becomes sticky, though did not drop off.

Sticky yes. But it don't get loose. ;)

I think by the time the D800 comes out in the later part of the year, prices would be high and stocks limited. So by the time we get our hands on the camera would be next year.

Geez...really?
Im fully hope you are wrong.

I 2nd that. I hope you are wrong...

FWIW, the prices of the 24-70 have gone up around SGD500 due to supply issues from Japan now. Same for the D3x, D3s and D700, all up by around 20%.

Seriously, given the production capacity of the Sendai plant, I have doubts as to whether the D800 or D4 will really appear this year.

it's already been reported that nikon has moved part of their production away fm sendai to other nikon production facilities like malaysia and mexico. so, while the new stuff might be a bit slower in coming out, i do think we will see some replacement models coming out soon, i guess.

anyway, if u need a camera, just buy. the next best camera is always on the horizon. but the best camera now is the one at hand. regardless of brand, nowadays i think cameras have hit LDMR where improvements are marginally incremental. high ISO performance for current Expeed nikons have gotten to the point where i seldom hear serious complaints nowadays online. the improvements i see now is over movie functions. so, unless u want to be the next speilberg... :think:

Don't look at me, I already bought my last bits of gear when the tsunami hit. Don't think I'll be buying anything else for awhile :)
