Wait for D800 or buy D700 now

And if that's true, that's great news for me. My D700 is a poor-man's D3s (fine by me) and if the D800 gives me performance almost as good as the D3x, it's great that I don't have to spend 12k on a body :)

Hey guys,
i happened to come across this page.

Dont know if its true.

It looks fake. Nikon isn't too much into the megapixel game.

Also, the "sneaky" tributes to Ken Rockwell gives it away as a fake...
"No professional 5:4 mode"
"Nikon really only want you using ISO 100 ~ 1,600, so lower ISOs are read as gibberish like "Lo-1" and higher ISOs are coded as garbage like "HI+2."

Specifications do not include personal comments like these.

To buy or not is like a 3-4k decision, unlike say considering buying a 2litre Japanese car, which is a 140k thing to think about.

If you got the money, just go for the instant gratification of having the swell cam and play with it NOW. If tomorrow, Nikon announces a replacement of the D700, it would take several months before the new cam hits the stores and there would be some queue for it.

No big deal to sell it away, with say 1k depreciated over say 6months or so, which is less than 200bucks a month. What is 200 when some guys spend that kind of money for model shoots.

Well, the great thing about photo toys is that it has got quite a bit of resale value.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nikon joins the megapixel race. The fact that they increased megapixels for D7000 shows that they see this marketing strategy by Canon as a threat to their sales.

Well I certainly hope it's a hoax... I'm not experienced in reading specs... :bsmilie:

We'll know if it's true, when it's true...

On the megapixel topic, I'm hearing rumours about ISO binning (?), which would allow users to select between a higher megapixel mode with lower ISO performance vs lower megapixel mode with better ISO performance. not sure how true this is, or whether the technology is even available, but I sure as hell would love to get my hands on D3x performance in the body of a D700 at less than half the price of a D3x, sans a couple of features (in the same way that D700 has a few features short of a D3/D3s), e.g. slower fps compared to the D3s.

A camera like this would give me amazing image quality in good light, with the D700 being the choice for concert, and indoor sports photography :)

really depends on your personality.. and how much cash u have, as well as your need.

new camera definetely cost alot more expensive to buy (esp. full frame, and availability is another thing also, possibly cost 1k+ more compared to one u can buy now)

do u rather pay 1k+ $ for more pixels and video or what ever new features (if u need it), or put that 1k+$ on a better glass.. honestly i would put 1k +$ diff on a better glass with a d700. plus you can start to shoot/play with it now , then waiting for something that is not exactly confirmed or whatsoever (i m not very sure on this , so dont flame me on this)

yes of course i do own d700 now. previously i used the d90, but i didnt actually use the video at all..

well if you have cash and you are not urgent about this.. best is of course wait for a newer camera and a good glass to complement with it..

I was quite happy i didnt wait for the newer replacement when i bought it few months back.. full frame with its high iso etc is really quite a joy to use, trust me on that..

;pNew tech should equate to better high iso performance with higher res....at least I hope so.

not only that. i am expecting video and better AF system and probably better ergonomics. they wouldn't be able to remain competitive if they still stick to their iso performance and more mp.

i replaced my D90 with a D700 last month, and have been having tons of fun with it. if i would to wait for D800, all these fun would not have been mine. nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, so no regret here!

i know of a professional wedding photographer, who is still using a canon 1D for the past 7 yrs with 2 shutter replacement.

of course i hope... that D700 replacement would use back MB-D10. ;)

Which I doubt, looking at how Nikon went with the D7000. It should be a new battery, and a new grip. But I got this feeling the new grip will work on both the replacements of D300s and D700.

That said, I still think D700 is a wonderful camera. I would still buy it in a heart beat if I am moving to FF. Especially how cheap it is nowadays. Value for $$. ;)

I got a brand new full warranty set for about the price of a BnS warranty-over set here. Of course I have to get my set "overseas". ;)

OH... didn't know SG nearby sell that cheaply... :)

yea... I think the price I got it at is even a lot cheaper than what some of the people are asking for in BnS. :o

It is normal. SG nearby always drop price a lot sooner than SG before the launch of a new product. Just like how they drop the price of the D90 around 9 months before the launch of D7k. SG only did it 2 months before.

For me, I view the merits of each camera, and how it relates to my needs... Not too bothered about what is coming next. And of course, the price of the D700 is sweeeeeet now...
