Trial run with the D700

Hi guys,

TS is sharing his trial shot for all to see.
Some who had not bought D700 may be interested to know how the camera performs in term of image reproduction.
We should appreciate his effort.

Although this particular image may not look good to some, but with your constructive comments we can learn something from it.
Noted that photo was taken at ISO 100. It is below the camera normal of ISO 200.

D700 have several Picture Control settings to choose from.
You can choose the “Portrait” setting when you do Portrait photography.
Or you can choose the “Dx2 Mode I” setting.
Both should give you better skin color than the “Standard” setting.

If you shoot landscape you can choose “Landscape” setting for richer green color.

You can also tweak the “Standard” setting to give you the color and effect that you prefer.

Taken from dpreview regarding DR,

Sensitivity Shadow range Highlight range Usable range
ISO 100* -4.7 EV 2.8 EV 7.5 EV
ISO 200 -4.7 EV 3.9 EV 8.6 EV

If shot at ISO 100, the colors might not be that good?

Not sure if this helps but i think it was mentioned before that you lose abit of dynamic range if you boost it to iso 100... but the pic looks fine to me and skintones are quite pleasant. Eyes are sharp but cant really see where is the focal point on my screen. Still nice dof, just that the picture itself is nothing special, i think its more of a snapshot. TS was only giving the d700 a test run for the first time so u gotta give him a break i think.

I hope the Moderator will be neutral here.

I've seen that he is currently owning a Nikon and hence a conflict of interest may arise.
Perhaps other Mods and the Admin could look into this matter

Do not assume. I do not just own a Nikon system, in fact I have more of Mamiya than Nikon, I also own:

Mamiya: RZ67 System: 1 x RZ67, 1 x RZ67 Por II, , 2 x 110mm, 1 x 140mm, 1 x 180mm 2 x 50mm , polaroid back flim back, close up tube 1 and 2,

Mamiya: 645system: 1 x 645AFDII, 55mm, 80mm, 35mm, 105-210mm, film back.

Aptus 17 Leaf digital back for Mamiya

whereas for Nikon system I have only 3 lenses ie, 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200, a D3 amd D700.

$ for $ as well as qty for qty I am more Mamiya biased. So your accusation and Bias is a non issue here.

Secondly, there is always a place, time and occasion for good humor, not here, not now and using 5DMkII to downplay D700 is not funny nor encourage as it is seen as a brand war. Period.

it is the man and not the equipment

put me in the lambo and i will still lose out to a swift in a race
but give me any camera and after getting to know it, i can bring out the best in that camera
even a P&S

there could be people just waiting for an opportunity to make remarks uncalled for, just based on one picture or something. maybe its cognitive dissonance, a constant need for it... *rolls eyes*

based on this single picture, how many people can tell the lighting condition? having used cameras from a two other camps between 2000-2004, and subsequently stuck to nikon till now, a camera is no miracle tool, that if the lighting condition is crappy, or the scene is crappy, dont expect pictures to turn out to be amazing in contrast, saturation and composition.

actually a good camera is one, that produces a picture true to the current lighting conditions/scene observed by the human eye. people've been doing amazing shots with the d3, the d700 with the same sensor shouldnt do any other wise, esp with the expeed.

a comparison and a trial is not a comparison without a control. what are you comparing against if there is a need to? how did they fare in the same conditions?

Mmm interesting, from the photo I would not even want to touch the D700 and the 85 f1.4 if I had not known. Luckily I owned the same combo before looking at the photo.

A single picture may make or break a photographer.

But this certainly isn't so where a photographer's tools are concerned.

i guess the pic wasnt your cup of tea then.

but then i won't rely on a pic to make a purchasing decision. :bsmilie:

seems like i opened a can of worms with a single picture. closing the thread to avoid any further unhappiness among everyone. cheers! :)

It is good you closed the thread. Cos the ramification is on you rather than others.

Secondly, whoever from Nikon Sg who "loaned" the camera to you for "review" as you have stated here http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4261931&postcount=87 will have quite alot of answering to do bec of this post of yours. Cos I was informed, that there was never any record authorizing a loan to you, not to say a loan for a such a "review". Last heard they are checking on the identity of the staff in Nikon who "loaned you the demo set".
