I am moving this thread.

1. The subject main subject is not Portrait but D700.

2. There are many images coming from this camera and certainly this is one of the worse in the hands of a Canon fanboy.

3. The purpose of this thread is questionable.

Hmmm... Don't see what the hype is... The colors seem washed out, and it sure doesn't look any sharper, etc than our "normal" DSLR cameras.

i posted some photos of the nikon launch taken with D700 and the lenses that Nikon supposedly loan to him.
i didn't seem to haf this problem with not sharp images or washed out colours.

no doubt that the mass agreed that the makeups were hideous...but the colours and sharpness seems to be pretty fine...i'm not sure what is ur take on this

i guess its more of the equipment in the wrong hands

how comparable is the 5D with an 85 1.4 and the D700 85 1.4

if there is not side by side comparison...i believe certain comments are probably bias or based on simply their own assumptions
But then again...such comparisons with technologies can never end.

I have both the combi but as many have said the 85 f1.4 is a great lens even on a DX cam but have yet to try on a FX cam. Maybe he got a lemon for both the D700 and the 85 f1.4 to try. :dunno:

Maybe we're downplaying the D700 for the upcoming 5D Mark II :bsmilie:

Was troubled to see 85 f1.4 and D700 degraded to such an extend.
Since I have the combo and don't think I got lemon I quickly took out ask my son to sit and snap in one of the the worst lighting condition with the D700 set on auto pilot mode.
I am relieved to know that it is not that bad after all.
Not adjusted except crop.

I have to admit.. this discussion is one of the funnier ones that have so far appeared on CS.. maybe we can shift it to kopitiam... then we can "Nikon vs Canon", "5D vs D700", rumour a bit about 26th, 27, 28th of Aug, Mark II etc etc :D ?? Peace to all :)

Ah, relax too - i see you own a Nikon too. It was just a casual suggestion of what TS is trying to do :bsmilie:
Beside, careful with your infraction dishing even though you're a mod - it was just a humor reference to TS.

Doubt it.

Doesn't matter which camera it is - but if you take any of the latest camera model from any brand (or even the last few previous generations), if you can't get a good S8R print from it - it's not the camera.

All the latest cameras from any brand produce excellent results up to S8R or the largest the desktop sized printers can print.

Sure, the different brands have different defaults for their own default look, but you can change those defaults (different brands offer different levels of customisation) or adjust the look in post.

Hi Dennis

> Since I have the combo

Seriously thinking about the same combo but was wondering whether the extra 0.4 is worth the extra $$? The D700 is a given, the 85mm f/1.4 vs f/1.8 is a little more confusing, any thoughts since we are in a "Nikon technical discussion about potraits with the D700"? :)

Er frankly I have 85 f1.4, 135 F2 DC, 60mm macro, 105mm Macro and other "portrait" lens so to speak but sadly is not interested in portrait so can't give much advise.
Most people who have used both the 85 f1.4 and the 135 DC said they prefer the 85 f1.4 for some reason. Also if considering the 85 f1.4 and f1.8 my opinion is the extra moola may be worth it for the satisfaction. :dunno:. Hope this is not too much off topic.

personally, i feel that
1) a normal and simple camera can perform well at the hands of a good photographer
likewise
2) an excellent camera can also perform well and produce good quality picture at the hands of an unskillful photographer (putting aside what kind of picture is being shoot at)

but again, if one can have the best of both worlds it will be perfect.

in this case here, is it a senario of an excellent camera onto the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it at all?

pls enlighten me...

i don't understand what was wrong with this thread. i thought this was a perfectly good image from the camera althought some might find it not to their liking. is this a cause to be given an infraction for and consider flame baiting?

i am actually offended ppl thought it was a crappy image. pls point out why it is crappy. i for one thought it was a good portrait. pls do not issue infractions and assume i am a fanboy. i am not bound to any camps for any reasons.

I hope the Moderator will be neutral here.

I've seen that he is currently owning a Nikon and hence a conflict of interest may arise.
Perhaps other Mods and the Admin could look into this matter

to those who said the image was not sharp. come on. try shooting the 85 and tell me you can achieve 100% sharpness with the situation and setting i shot it with.

then again, there were people who thought your pics were crappy. end of the day, its up to individual users to draw their own conclusions based on the images presented right?

find nothing wrong with the pic...in fact i kinda like it colour tone

i guess to be fair, the Portrait section did not split into Nikon and Canon section like the B&S section, so mod is telling you to be more careful with your Subject/Topic.

Then again, there is no reason why anyone can't be a fan of/and own cameras from both camps example KRW :embrass:

I personally own a Fuji but all Nikon lenses so im not sure which camp am i allowed to be in here. If i said my S5 still takes nicer pics than D300, i might be in trouble.

85mm f/1.4

Whats wrong with this picture?

The eyes are in focus, the skin tone is smooth, and look at the hair.. its crisp sharpness abit messy though :p.

Maybe if the model is a SUPERMODEL With her top off it might be a better shot?

Grow up please..

BTW iPHone is out!! :D
