Lenses have a certain number of elements arranged in several groups. Depending on the focal length, various lens groups would move, hence the need for the barrel to extend. Nothing unusual in this.
Ok... Understand.

IMO, extension of the front barrel does not bother me at all. Even the Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 extends while zooming.

Not sure if this is old news but someone found this http://thkphoto.com/news/news-pr040107.html
This is the distributor of Tokina lenses in USA. It says a release in May 2007!
From the outlook, sample shots, expected selling price and long wait......Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 seem to be a better choice for me since I already have a Tokina 12-24mm f4.![]()
The extension of the front barrel of Tokina does bother me and it is also the reason I didn't get Tamron. But now Tamron seems to be a better choice and of course the MTF50 look fantastic! ;p
Just curious... why does the barrel extension bothers you?
There ain't many zoom lens that does not extend.

Based on the review on this site http://www.mobile01.com/newsdetail.php?id=3317 , the Tokina seems to suffer from chromatic aberration much worse than the Tamron 17-50 or the Sigma 18-50. Look at the shots taken with Tokina showing very clear bluish cast around high contrast region when opened wide. The plus side is that the lens seems to have better construction than the others, and also 'look' better with a wider front. The Tamron and Sigma have its front tapered off, which doesn't look so nice.
