To buy D90 or D5000-- URGENT!!

Either one for present use is good ... if get the D5000, dun start looking at other cam. Shoot, shoot and learn ... once you find that it's a roadblock with the functions/options that you have with it and need a pro body, then upgrade.

IMHO, if u get a D90, it'll last you longer than it would a D5000

OR you can ditch both and get errr ... D700? :bsmilie:

luna_sea83 is very right! $1350 (D90 body)+$1050 (D5k b) +$700(D60 b) is almost = $3100 (D700 b) Ha ha ha:bsmilie:

D60 with kit lens cost about $800. D5000 with same kit lens about $1180. Means the improved D5000 functions will cost you $380 or about 50% more than for a D60 body. It seems like it is very hard to just buy the D5000 body at present. For those thinking of upgrading from a D40/60 it may be better to go straight for the D90 which will cost about $1,380 for body only.

see the different...each jump is abt $400-500.

of course d90 is better than d5000 and d5000 is better than d60
so is d700 better than d300 and d300 better than d90.

if got money buy the best, else...all of the above cameras from d3 to d40 produces excellent photos.

Just that some out perform others especially in low light situation. and not many of us really print photos bigger than A4 size (which a 6mega pix more be more than egh). Pros aside, hobbist dun really print size bigger than A4 and in most case just a 4R-3R photo.

for a 4R-3R photo, d60/40 can perform well even in lowlight @ iso1600 (which is darn fast to me) - u cant really see the noise on small photos.

for me i would pay the price for d80/90 due to 1) ergonomics ->d40/60/5000 too small for my hands, plus only 1 command dial

to me d5000 is a good enough replacement for my d40.
as i believe AF-S lens will eventually get cheaper, just look at the new 35mm f1.8, but anyway, AF-S lens is the future for nikon now.

buy the d90 only if you need to AF with the cheap AF-D 50mm prime lens.

Surely I will go for D90... The top screen is very useful, so is the AF screw. I sold away my AFS Kit lens and top up a bunch of money to get the AFD lenses. If you just want a cam that take better photos than compact camera, go get the D5000. Otherwise grab the D90, it will last you longer

If so isn't it more worth it to go for a 2nd hand D80 compared to a new D5000 and D90? Also will there be better deals in mega fairs? Or will I be better off getting equotes from the recommeneded companies?

A 2nd hand D80 is more than enough, but go for a 2nd hand D90 better due to liveview and better noise control.

Get a 2nd hand D90. Forget the D5000, new.

Agree. Newbie should get a D90.

I went for the D60 last time and after a few months, I was itching for more but was tied up by budget.

D60 was fine for me actually but the limited selection of AFS lenses I can afford made my shooting less flexible and i wasnt decided back then what type of photography I'm going for. I cannot even use the 50mm 1.8 properly especially when I'm shooting my hyper daughter because of the manual focus.

D90 will last you around 2 years or so I think unless you really fall in love with it and really wont let it go. Plus the ability to get cheaper or second hand old AF lenses will guide you faster in knowing what type of shooting you'll like. Then you'll know what to invest in, 70-200mm 2.8 VR? 85mm 1.4? D3X maybe?

IMO, anything (cameras with internal motor) that can AF with old lens is good enough. It makes replacement of body easier too because you already have those lens that can work with bodies with or without internal motor. It's the lens that's going to cost more in the long run....

d80 is a great body, but when comparing noise with newer bodies, you'll be disappointed.

between d60/40/40x, i rather spend on the d80. comparing to d5000, i'd choose d80 for its commander mode, AF for older lenses(ie built in motor). I will live with the noise of the d80 since i've a d50 and owned d70 before.

between d90 and d5000, i dont need the swivelling screen. i dont mind lying down on the floor or predicting and shooting from high angle. what's important to me is the top screen.
having had the top screen since my film days, i've stuck to using bodies that has it.

my best and most honest opinion for all newbies/new comers is to go out and try out the body yourselves. seriously do it. i have used the d40series and d60 and I never felt comfortable with it. having to use the LCD for the information of shutter speed/iso/aperture makes me uncomfortable, and also i have big hands.

go down to the shops, test it out. after all, its you people who will own it, not us.

In practical reality, without the built-in motor is not of a huge concern for most people if they don't have legacy lenses. And for majority of us, the availability of AF-S lenes today are varied enough.

More expensive, no AF on 50mm primes and limited choice are just excuses (at least to me). More often than not, it's the excellent 3" VGA screen that we're drooling about!
