I just got a D5000 today,

Honestly speaking, its quite beyond my expectation, even the menu is almost like the D90 series and above unlike the D40/x/60

It could give D90 a run for its value but still i love my D90 ;)

How much damage for your purchase? ;)

Got it at 1185 from J316

Noticeably not much diff between the 2 : namely
-D5000 have a smaller and lower resolution LCD than the D90
-FPS - a mere diff of 0.5
- one lcd that siwel and the other doesn't.

A minor concern though (doesn'y really bother most ppl thou)
- D5000 doesnt AF with older AF lens

My Vote for D90 over D5000.
Though my happiness with D90 is "short lived"
Never regret owning it :)

Just go out and shoot pictures with your new baby.

You should ask yourself what are you going to shoot often with the new DSLR.
For fun, serious paid work, casual shoot or hobby... (still got more not yet mention) then it's easier to choose what you need not what you want.

This is the point i have thought of before i conclude what i need. Thanks Jnet! ;)

As i mention my 1st choice is D90 and then i happened on D5k threat and was curious how much cheaper it's going to be and not compromising what i need on my cam.

If you need the extra functions on the D90 do get it, its worth every cent

D5k is nice to have as a extra body

it's actually worth to pay additional for longer zoom lens. not to say it comes with more feature, though u may not need it. Sorry, only budget is not a concern

the bigger and higher resolution LCD of the D90 has already made D90 the clear winner.
Some people might disagree with me but the top LCD of the D90 is such an essential features..well, at least for me.
$150++ difference for a built-in motor which enable AF with older lens like 85mm f/1.4 ) a.k.a creamer...

Seriously folks, its a no brainer.

i semi agree with this.

this 2 cameras belong to different categories of shooters. if you are going to hold a D5000 entire days walking around singapore shooting, then i wish you luck, especially when you have hands the size of godzilla.

to TS: go look at the comfort level when you hold the camera. if it doesnt even feel right in your hands, will you even use it to shoot?

think.

Want something more flexible than a point and shoot... D5000.

Think you want to build up as a hobby... D90.

Not being sexist here... rather Big Hands? Ergonomics? D90

There are many AFs lens around nowadays...

I even forsee myself not using any AFD lens in 5 years time.

So Screw or no screw drive.. well... I still has an arsenal of AFDs

Skip the 18~55mm. Buy Super Zooms as first lens if you are new to photography.

Later you will find that it is the lens that counts... not the body.

Cheers!

Yes... Olympus E-3.... It is Very Useful as a Live Viewer for Low angle and high angle shot and 'odd' angle shot. :)

Cheers!

It all depends on ur budget. The more u pay, the more u will get. But personally, i would go for the D5000.

Hey Bro, If this is your 1st DSLR then D5K will be a good entry level until you gain more competency in photography to move up the ladder. OT if you had a DSLR b4 this I suggest D90 is your best bet until the next newer D400 or D750 appear later this year;p;p then you can't decide again.

Just go out and grab one and like NIKE-Just Do it!:sweatsm:

I just went D90 for my first DLSR 2 days ago. D5K did attract me for a while. But after thinking that if one day I feel I need to upgrade a little bit, then an entry level D5K will be actually a burden - as a husband with kid, getting the budget for such a toy is sometimes not easy, so I don't want to go through it again few years later.

D60 with kit lens cost about $800. D5000 with same kit lens about $1180. Means the improved D5000 functions will cost you $380 or about 50% more than for a D60 body. It seems like it is very hard to just buy the D5000 body at present. For those thinking of upgrading from a D40/60 it may be better to go straight for the D90 which will cost about $1,380 for body only.
