Get a d90 if you can.But if budget is a constraint get a D5000
The difference of having a built in motor in the body is a bigger deal as it seems.Coming from a d40 use,I find it hard choosing the right lens becoz I only have the pool of AF-S lenses and many good lenses either Nikon or any third party do not have a motor.
Take me for an example.I'm looking for a 50mm that can af on y d40 and my only choice is AF-S 50mm F1.4G.It cost a bomb for me (I'm a student and a hobbyist)and I can't look into getting a AF 50mm F.1.8 or 1.4 which cost aload cheaper.
Its your decision

Good evening/morning guys. This thread has helped me choosing between D90 and D5000. I was thinking that the D5000 cost more than the D90. But after reading up the specs and some other advice from friends, decided to get the D90. This is going to be my very first DSLR.

I have only one qns in mind. Why are canons cheaper than nikons? A 500D with kit lens(18-55) cost $13XX when a D90 with kit lens(18-55) cost $15XX

BTW I am trying to figure out if i should get the 18-55mm or 18 105mm lens. Difference between the two packages are about $150.

Thank you :)

Congrats on making a choice, welcome and enjoy your D90.

Hmm then why didn't you choose Canon? You yourself should know what you are paying more for, right? Or did you dive into your advised choice instad of doing some independent research?

18-105mm VR FTW! In terms of resale value & demand. Range, quality, built but its really heavy compared to 18-55 tho its worth lugging this heavy lens around.

my vote to D90 unless u have very tight budget....u wont regret!

For camera, you get what you pay for. I think this applies to most electronic products.

Hi,

The price difference for a D90 kit and D5000 kit is about $5000. I believe the features are very close? Is it worth to pay $500 more for the difference in the 18-55 lens and 18-105 lens? which camera would u recommend to get? If possible, please state the important difference between the 2 cameras? Hope to get my new DSLR camera soon.

Head down to the shops and try them out yourself...

Essentially they can produce similar image quality only difference in features.

See which one you find comfortable to use with, not only that, why limit yourself to these 2 models only? Can also try out other brands/models to see which is the one that worth your money...

At the end of the day, you are the one paying for it and using it, we can only give you comments based on our own opinions which defer from person to person...

BTW, there's no urgency in deciding on a purchase, esp with dslr...as it involves quite substantial financial commitment...try them out thoroughly and decide on the best you can afford.

im a pro 2nd hand. exd80 2nd hand , now d90 2nd hand =p

- d5000 first hand =1200 (18-55vr)
d90 2nd hand =1200 (1350+18-55vr)..

simple to say with to get, pay $150 more can get d90 with 18-55vr lens. d90 is definately better! ergonomics wise + got internal motor, can use lens like 50mm f1.4 D!!

no such thing as a super lens.
unless u first define "super" yourself.
to me super lens = 10-500mm lens with 0 distortion at all range, f1.4 constant, weight less than 1kg, size less than 30cm long, no lens flare, 0 vignet, etc etc, cost (less than $500) that would be super for me!(no such stuff exist yet)

maybe u should ask when dun use the standard kit lens?
i used 18-55 vr before, seriously its one of the value for money walk around lens, weighing a mere 200grams. It IQ is gd too.

if u are thinking of getting something better than this then u should ask these questions
1) am i looking for a different range e.g 18-200, 24-70, etc
2) am i looking for better IQ
3) am i looking for a faster lens?
4) what do i shoot often.

dun just de-value kit lens, shoot with it until u know what u want then go buy it

I have a D90 kit with 18-105mm VR for about 4months now...

don't feel any real urge to go out and get something to replace it...
only other lens which i bought is the DX 35mm f1.8 for $370 to have more 'fun'...

am lucky i have a cousin whom has lent me the 18-200mm VRII for my travels...tempted to sell the 18-105mm and get that instead but really no hurry as well since the 18-105mm is not a bad lens.

The D5000 is basically a D90 in a newer, cheaper, lighter, smaller camera. Image quality is identical, and you also get the nifty tilt and swivel screen with the D5000.

Get the D5000 and save your $500 for better glass or a speedlight.
IMO I think D5000 is more of an upgrade of D60 not downgrade of the D90:nono:. I had & have both D60 & D90 and no doubt D5k is similar in internal features but the size, the feel when you hold it is like a D60. There is a lack of the command dial, many buttons and the top LCD missings, the LCD screen is 230k dots...etc. Also the Mode Dial is so 'lousy' looking like one of these from Ca*&n brand.

You know the D90 has a top lcd display that displays the ISO, Apature etc? Izit useful? Cos the D5000 dont have
This is very useful when you are accessing the menus and having to confirm the current settings before taking the shot. With the D5k you need to fiddle around with more of the menus in one LCD screen and by the time you figure out what the shot is gone;(

Want something more flexible than a point and shoot... D5000.

Think you want to build up as a hobby... D90.

Not being sexist here... rather Big Hands? Ergonomics? D90

There are many AFs lens around nowadays...

I even forsee myself not using any AFD lens in 5 years time.

So Screw or no screw drive.. well... I still has an arsenal of AFDs

Skip the 18~55mm. Buy Super Zooms as first lens if you are new to photography.

Later you will find that it is the lens that counts... not the body.

Cheers!

Yes, you'll need the use of AFS type lenses for quick shots which will costs more $$ unless budget is not an issue with you.

I would go for the D90 if budget allows cos photography is not a cheapo hobby and be prepared to spend at least $10k to 20k for a decent system:lovegrin:

Good luck!

TS, I'll advise you to do some reasearch. Here are some links for both cameras,

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5000.htm (There is a quick comparison of the D5000 & D90)

At the end of the day, the best thing to do is to try it. All the reading from forum and review will matter if you don't like how the camera feels in your hands. Personal experience, I had my mind set on a Canon dslr but I just did not like the feel of the camera in my hand. Held a Nikon and there has been no turning back since.

Lastly, IMHO, a D90 allows you to expand your scope of photography and take the hobby to the next level. It also gives you the option of a bigger range of nikon or 3rd party lens as you can consider lens without in build motor which tend to be cheaper than those with the motor. If your aim is to use the dslr as a PnS camera and you have no intention of ever buying more lens, then go for the D5000.

Save the $500 for a better len, just get a good afforadable body. Len can keep much longer than the body;)

Because Canon and Nikon are such good friends since so long ago that they never have a directly competing models. Look at Nikon's entry level, D40/D60/D5000, they are cheaper than Canon's 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D. Then comes the mid level Nikons, the D80, D90 etc, then followed by the semi pro Canons, the 40D, 50D, then the semi-pro Nikons, D300, then the Canon 5D and the pro bodies.

They stagger their products so well to cater for the widest market coverage possible. That's why they are the market leaders and they give enough market share to each other. Plus each of them has their own share of loyal customers.

HAHAHA $5000 difference.
erm.

if i were you, i would save up and get D90 .

since u need an answer fast... i didn't read what other member adviice to u and just give u an answer...

get a D90 if u have the money...
get a D40 or D40x or D60 if u dun...

4get about the D5000...

the end...

I just got a D5000 today,

Honestly speaking, its quite beyond my expectation, even the menu is almost like the D90 series and above unlike the D40/x/60

It could give D90 a run for its value but still i love my D90 ;)

Haha. I bought a D5000 traded in with the 18 - 55VR lens and bought the 18-105 VR lens for abt slightly more ~1.5k. It was a rather haste decision to buy it, I chose D5000 over D90 because it was considerably lighter and smaller then I tried both the camera with the same lens, but after reading the various reviews, most would choose d90 over d5000, so having second thoughts now or regrets now :( , haha, but whats bought is already bought grass always greener over the other side, essentially, D5000 do not have the flash commander thingy, in build focus motor, pentaprism view finder and in place, it has quite a few in build scene shooting modes, the rotating lcd monitor and subject focusing ability for moving objects. Essentially the sensor and picture quality is the same as d90 for so they say. But again I do not have any old lens or without AF ones,

Someone already selling his D5000 for $1180 at B&S!!! THat's really FAST!!!
