Been following your post and just finished reading thru 48 pages of post ever since this thread started.
I'm also keen in getting a FZ18 or FZ28. Any advice on which? I am also considering the LX3 as it has great reviews on it.
Right now, I've been using a PnS camera, Casio ZX70. It has been serving me well but beginning to know more abt photography and been trying out using manual mode.
Most of my shots are mainly indoors and under light of my son. Occasionally i take outdoors but will be concentrating on portraits.

Indoors, be it the LX3 or FZ28, make sure flash is used! The fast aperture is no subsitute, and neither is the F2 on the LX3 seriously, its really over-rated. (Even on my dSLR, F2 still requires ISO 800 to get a shutter of 1/125 indoors. Not very fast if you ask me.)
If you're into portraits, FZ28 may be better... but still very nervous honestly. You won't have DOF effects, but your chances of getting it are better than the LX3. Not good shooting portraits with wide angles, as you get funny fat noses with smaller eyes and extremities.
Do consider stepping into the DSLR world too =) Get a 2nd hand body and some lenses... A budget of 900 should suffice, and satisfy.
Overall, I rate the FZ18 or 28 more versatile and a better buy than the LX3. If you're not interested in the extra features, the FZ18 is more bang-for-bucks... probably $350 brand new if you can buy it in hongkong or something.

i have tried using all 3 camera tat u stated, FZ18, 28 and LX3...
LX3 have very good colour, for people like me, who dunno how to fully utilise photoshop, its a great cam... but down side, low zoom... imagine u went to zoo, and tiger is behide the fence and rather far away, without zoom, u can't really get a close shot of the tiger. Even with tele convector it also won't help at all
FZ18 28 is about the same, but 28 is better of coz... only disadvantage is the noise of image and the size as compared to LX3...
anyway, u might wanna consider 2nd hand FZ18 and 28 (2nd hand FZ18 is dirt cheap)
and u might also wanna consider other brand

I've had my Fz28 for 1 week already. Am a newbie and this is my first digicam. Also had the dilemma between LX3 and FZ28. Finally decided on the FZ28 as it has a huge zoom which you can also use in video.

Somehow the starters always come up with very neat pictures to make you feel nervous about your abilites.... haha..
Keep it up resca. Hope you enjoy your cam! Perhaps you can join us for some of our FZ group outings =)
Skyguy, LX3 uses the same sensor as FZ28, technically speaking their noise levels should be exactly the same right? :dunno:
