S, what time are you available? Maybe we can hang around longer to tailor to your timing?

I'm going out with a group of pros this tuesday for a Xmas lights shoot.

I hope you are talking about professional photograhers!!!!

Yea I am... so happened that I have this friend who is a photographer and he invited me to one of his outings.

To my knowledge, there are only fishing ponds in Singapore, whereby the fishes are breed in the ponds (no access to the sea). Variety is limited and largely scares. But they do rent reels and etc. My opinion, its much more boring than going out to sea to do it.

I caught a shark once when I was young, in Australia. =) It was about 1.1 meters long. Haha, thats all I remember. But it was pregnant though, 7 babies I think. =(

Sadness, I found a scratch in one of the middle elements of my favorite lens. =(

Hi Vinze, fishing would be great but I won't have any gear with me, but I was thinking of hitting a tacle shop and maybe buying a new baitcasting reel.
Is there any place that you can hire rods and reels, is there a pond that you can fly fish?
Would really like to find out more about the fishing scene in S/pore cuz if I retire there I would miss fishing terribly.

hey Rob, there's fishing ponds over here, my dad's a fishing fanatic too, 1 cupboard in my room has at least a dozen rods.. he usually 'tries' to sneak in a new one without letting my mum know but well.. heh ;p

depending on the location you settle down, some ponds would charge est SGD70 for 12 hours, either 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am, and i really advise you to bring your rods over or get a new one..
having personally loaned a few.. it just isnt worth the queue and money

i fish weekly at our local ponds

Rates are not that high.
Its only 35 for 12 hours
unless your talking about pro pond which is at $50 for a 3 hour slot.

And there are more then a few ponds in singapore.

and there are in fact quite a number of different types of fish in the ponds.

not to mention fresh water and salt water ponds with different types as well.

I have a 3-piece baitcaster rod that I bought when I used to ride my BMW motorbike, maybe I should bring that and buy a new reel over there. Will think about it over the next few days.

hey vinze, which one you went to? i was charged 70 that time when i went to the one at pasir ris, for 1 rod only o_O
end up only caught 4, gave up and put them back

Hey, I have been sneaking rods and reels in just like your Dad. My wife has not yet noticed that my rod rack is getting full so I leave some gear at my fishing buddies place just to avoid the wrath of the Minister of Finance. Are there any boats that do off-shore fishing trips, if there are what do they charge? Is there a website I can look at.
Are there places where you can leave your boat in in storage and get it launched if I decide to buy a boat when we move there.
Here in Oz we take our boats home, but in Singapore I don't think I will even bother with owning a car, but a boat is a necessity.

Just got some bad news, an email just arrived saying our return flight to Singapore from Vietnam has been delayed by 3 hours and we will only be landing at 8:00pm. I don't think I have ever been on a Tiger flight that has left on time, I guess you cannot complain when you fly Cheap Charlie Airlines. By the time we get through immigration and all that stuff will not get home till after 9:30pm. Looks like will not be able to make it in time for NYE fireworks to get a good spot.
Hope we can see the fireworks from Regentville Towers in Hougang, I think you can see the Singapore Flyer from there. I think even 18x zoom will be tested to get any result, do not like my chances. Last time we were in S/pore we stayed in Sembawang with Amy's eldest son. We only went to Hougang once and I noticed the Flyer a long way off.
Daughter in law (Sembawang) was going to get tickets for us on the flyer that night, lucky she did not yet.
What to do, cannot be helped.

How can that happen Mr. Ombre?

Most probably manufacturing defect. Obviously I didn't do it. Sigh, my lens feels really sharp to me, I hope it stays the same after returning from the service center. I shall send it in after the outing, sometimes they just take too long.

Exams over. =)

Now I'm still contemplating if I should get my last lens. Hah. Lots of decision making processes that are very hard to make!

Hi ombre
Congrats on finishing exams  How long to get results?
I have been given OK to get Raynox DCR 250 had to agree to let Amy go to Cameron Highlands with her son and daughter-in-law two days before I go home. I protested that I didn't want to get the macro lens if it meant I had to be away from my lovely wife for one moment,.......then I could not keep a straight face anymore and broke out laughing, what a win , win situation. I get the lens I want and total freedom on last two days, to do what ever I want. And I get to play the martyr. "OK sweety you go off and have a good time, I'll be fine all by myself just sitting around waiting for my flight home" hehehehe
"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine all alone in a strange country, by myself, by the way is the credit card paid up? Whack!!!!:sweatsm:

alone ? does that spell FREEDOM ??

Haha

u have tons of frens here to go photo taking or fishing !!

enough bout fishin, ~ lets take it to Pm or the mods will come after me ..

Hey Rob, haha, you're a mushier guy than I expected, but its sweet to say the least.

In anycase, no doubt the raynox will serve you well, but I truly suggest practicing some shots with it first. Perhaps on at least 2 occasions. =) I guess its just me, but I really endorse for well-researched purchases. =)

Here I leave you something to think about.

Focus: The raynox requires a closer focusing distance. ~10cm. This can be difficult to achieve. Furthermore Perfect AF may not be possible, you may require MF to use it right. If I recall Skyguy taught me to use a 'shifting' technique which you manually bring the lens nearer/further to the subject to achieve focus, this is a plausible. All in all, a hit or miss focusing chance is implied, since your LCD screen doesn't offer the highest resolution. Tripods may make this technique hard to achieve.

Due to the focusing distance, you might be limited to only small bugs. Dragonflies etc may be out (unless you're only going for its eyes). Fast moving critters are totally out of the equation.

My keeper shots with Macro has always been very low, the last 'statistically charted' was ~17% out of 87 shots, more than half are flowers (easier), and only about 2-3 of the shots were butterflies. (Granted, I'm bad at macros + Had no tripod or IS + using a really long lens doesn't help)

I'm not saying don't get it! haha, I'm just offering another side of the picture... I had quite a few bad buys just because of only reading positive reviews + the marketting speech.

Also, did you get clearance for a TCON?! I think a TCON > Raynox, but thats just my personal opinion. TCON can bring you closer to the macro subject too. (Doesn't help "supersizing" the subject if you're already close enough though) but if you tend to work from a 30-40cm distance, maybe a TCON helps better.

Do also consider the Raynox-150. I wanted to get one of those, cheaper (but less avail now), and less magnification, which may seem bad, but for me, I preferred the longer distance (20cm), and less magnification allows you more room for errors. Slight off focus shots aren't so notable.

I've decided on which lens too buy too, now I need money and a good offer... ahh! Looking to burn another 400!

Hi ombbbre, thanks for your words of wisdom, maybe Tcon will be better choice seeing as I can still use closeup filters. I hope Mr Skyguy will allow me to try his Raynox, may have to put it on back burner and get in June on next trip.
How much is a 2x Tcon roughly? Might have to get both, Amy will be away so while the cat is away the mice can act like rats!!!!

no idea, i wasnted the one who paid at the counter, so i just pay my friend who paid for us first, oh well, what's done's done, lol

maybe next time i'll make him pay for us all then :bsmilie:

Best option is a TCON-17 via the numbers of reviews I read, and well I had it hands-on myself too. So yea, it did the job, although you can still expect contrast loss. The image was still fairly sharp.

I haven't seen it selling in shops, I heard that it goes for 135 brand new at TK (bugis). Should be only around 70-90 2nd hand.

------

Anyway guys, I found this website that sells stuff pretty cheap and they deliver worldwide for free. I'll be buying some items from there, just wondering if you guys want to hitch a ride and we can get the bulk discounts, they have photography accessories there.

http://www.dealextreme.com

I've looked through some of their products, mostly are 3rd party stuff, although they seem to have some genuine stuff. Avoid the filters unless its something you don't use often (like a star filter). Avoid the memory cards too, they look iffy. Generally, only buy things that are dirt cheap and that you generally can't go wrong about. (Hoods, Straps, Covers, lens caps, Blowers).

They're known to be reliable but somewhat slow (like 1 month delivery), or so I gather from other photography forums.

So let me know if you guys wanna get some stuff, I'm only opening it to my friends on this thread, so yea =), try to keep it to the low cost items only, and I'll actually require you to transfer me the money first. (Don't worry I'll try to print the invoices to prove that I'm not taking a slice out of it!)

I'm already getting 2 items, their discounts are for 3, 5 or 10 items together. =)

check the site you lazy boy!

Psychologically, if you said no naughty thoughts ,the association has been made consciously, which meant you thought about it. If it appears in the conscious, its definitely in the sub-conscious as well. =)

Heres a simple experiment: Try imagining how a white polar bear looks like. After that, say to yourself "I must not visualize a white polar bear" for 5 minutes. And you'll notice how many times the polar bear pops up in your head. =) When you say you don't think of it, or forcefully suppress a thought, you usually increase the chances of recall, by a lot.

Anyway I think I saw some going for like 4 USD
