Thoughts on LEICA M ?

you guys should consider yourselves lucky. i used my M for a day before I realised that the LEDs in the viewfinder were defective ie. some of the segments do not light up..... frankly at this price segment, their QC is disappointing! I'm now waiting patiently for my replacement (it's been two weeks already and hopefully wont have to wait much longer).

LEDs? I thought Leica still uses small light bulbs...

i may have described it technically incorrect - maybe they are LCDs, but it's the red digits that show you the shutter speed in the VF.

Got mine about 3 weeks back. Didn't spend much time on it yet. Further more my main Mac machine was down few days after getting my M. So can't view the files with a properly calibrated monitor.

Today, after taking few shot, the LCD dead :( It will go bland a few second after turning on the camera. Turning it off and on again won't help unless waited for a longer period. But it will go bland again very soon. Now need to send back for repair. Sigh!

Two shots from the initial shooting. Processed on an uncalibrated MacBook Air.

argh...................

This thread............. Reminds me of the days when the M8 & M9 came out!
Afraid I still cant justify putting down money onto this new M! Haiz...........

Been shooting on my film M for the pass few donkey years, kind of getting tired of scanning films but digital Ms are just out of my reach Still a towkay toy to me haha

hmmm....what does this thread sound so familiar :)

I just ordered a Viso III and 65 elmar from KEH. I'm going against the grain here, pfft digital EVFs!! :D

darn, only 3 weeks and mine is being recalled for loose carrying strap eyelets. don't know how long it takes to fix it.

Pretty much every single M that shipped before April 5th is being recalled.

Just sent in mine this morning.... It was a perfect camera without any issues. Now I'm worried that it will come back with more problems after solms..especially if they are gonna take it apart and re assemble them back... hahah(nervously)

Conspiracy theory so take with a HUGE pinch of salt...

Unofficially I have been told that it is more than just fixing the lugs, there are other things that will be fixed/upgraded as well. I was not told if its software or hardware. But I am assuming they will address the list of problems experienced by some, like the random lockups, random under exposure and unable to wake from sleep etc.

Presumably it is brand new? Since this model so new that none or few in second hand market. Considering the high price, malfunction is not acceptable. Could it be that nothing is wrong with the camera. Just that you have made some user settings that off the LCD.

Having sent my M240 to Solms for the recall, I started using my m8 more.
This is so as I have recently sold me beloved 21mm Super Elmar M ASPH in exchange for a new 21mm Summilux ASPH.
Not that I am not satasified with the performance of the 21mm SEM but rather liking it so much and using it so often made me decide to venture for the 21 mm Lux. my rational was to have a fast and wide lens mated to the M240 will allow me to explore less well lited subjects especially indors to capture the full environment with a freehand on DOF control.
However in the absence of my M240, my M8 was utilized as a fast 28mm lens when the 21mm Lux was attached due to the 1.33 factor of non FF. Below 2 shots were taken with my M8 with 21mm Summilux ASPH @ f1.4, ISO 160.

When it came to post processing in LR4.4, I truly feel the vast differences the 24MP M240 had progressed in dynamic range compared the the 10MP M8 and 18MP M9 (which I previously had but sold). In the DNG shots, one can effectively pull details out of underexposed images from a M240 to improve the balance of the pics ( closer to what the eye sees compared to how the camera exposes the pics).
That is when I really start to miss my M240. All that said about not needing anything more than a M9, I can conclude that it is perhaps one has not yet experienced the significant dynamic range improvement between a M240 and its predesessors.

How were you informed? How long from the time of registration till the time Leica notified you?

LOL.... but sad really !!

You should NOT have to wait... At that cost it SHOULD be a direct swap !!
