The Pentax K1 Thread! - Post all your K1 picts and impressions

There's some user reviews out there, but I guess the sample size currently is too small to make a judgement call on this FF ultra wide offering from Pentax.

Few things I usually consider for ultra wides these days is when matched with the K1 is able to resolve edge to edge well. I look at its "starburst" effect. Of course, its physical attributes and the ability to take on filters.

For the starburst, unlike the Pentax APS-C lenses, the starburst while pronounced doesn't have the typical oomph we are so used to. The likes of DA15, DA12-24 if you see the starburst are very distinct and extremely pointed. From the examples I see in the 15-30, not so, but still acceptable.

Resolution, I can't tell, I don't have the lens. But I know that quite a number of reviews suggest that it's up there with good ultra wides. But I am always wary of sample variations.

Physical attributes - I saw the images pair with K1, and to be honest, most "lao jiao" pentax users in SG are likely to be put off. Are we carrying 70-200 or what... LOL. But consider this context, if you put a 14/15mm f2.8 + 21mm f2.8 + 24/25mm f2.8 + 28mm f2.8 and of course, Pentax being the queer one out there who had a 30mm f2.8. You'll probably be carry similar or heavier weight. So it really depends on your preference.

I enjoy longer exposure photography (doesn't have to be a 5min 6min exposure), but the ability to mount filters to prolong the exposure have always been 1 of the pre-requisite for me. As this lens is likely to be physically similar to Tamron 15-30, there's solutions out there.

There's another way to go, and that's to get something slightly smaller like a 20mm or a 24mm prime, and you do Panos with it. There's many small multi-row pano heads out there that'll help you create a wider POV. But not many will enjoy the technicalities of putting this together.

The Samyang 14 seems to be quite good - Check Pinholecam's images with it. And I would even consider the Samyang 24mm TS lens.

Just my short 2c worth.

Now what would I buy? If I buy all those legacy lens, or even the samyang, I will always be thinking what if I stick to Pentax. If it's a Pentax lens, I think for me, I'll see less BnS, BnS. :)

clap clap clap....:)

A new pentax user here.
I was thinking of getting DFA 15-30mm and but here I saw a shot with Samyang 14mm which is nice too.
I have read the review here (http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/hd-pentax-d-fa-15-30mm-f28-ed-sdm-wr.html) and it does not offer any significant benefit over Sanyang.
Can anyone recommend a good ultra wide-angle lens for K-1?

It's hard to comment on the DFA15-30 since no one here has one yet and I have never tried it.
By all reviews and forum comments, it seems a good lens that is on par with the best uwa out there.

To me, the Samyang 14 and DFA15-30 are different options boiling down to the following :
1. Primes or zoom
2. Modularity and size/weight vs One lens do all
3. Off-the-wall shelf lens profiles (dfa) or diy/user profiles (Samyang)
4. Price
5. Flare resistance(dfa)

A good copy of the Samyang 14 has good edge to edge OQ.
Distortion is quite a lot, but correctable with a custom profile.

Both lenses need special filter holders.
150mm filter plates

My few cents

There's another option for full frame UWA lens - the Irix 15mm f/2.4
The Irix 15mm is offered in two varieties: 'Blackstone' and 'Firefly.' The Irix Blackstone features a magnesium and aluminum body able to withstand 'extreme conditions,' while the Irix Firefly model is, according to the company, the lightest lens in its class. Both versions of the lens will launch this spring in Canon EF, Nikon F and Pentax K mount; price hasn't been revealed at this time.

Thank you and appreciate felixcat8888, hjbyeo, pinholecam and kengoh for your answers and sharing.

I agree to "the sample size currently is too small to make a judgement call on this FF ultra wide offering from Pentax" by hjbyeo.

There are the some factors which I can think of ultra wide-angle lens based on other reviews/websites/forums.
Please correct me if I'm wrong as I'm a newbie.

I took reference from Tamron 15-30mm info for Pentax 15-30mm.
It seems both lens are built exactly the same component (diaphragm blades, etc) except Pentax lens doesn't have the stabilizer.

I will include Irix here although it is not release yet.

Some are based on Tamron reviews
Samyang - tons of reviews on this lens as well as a lot of fights between users (samyang 14mm vs canon 14mm vs nikon 14mm)

I think, I should wait and see on Iris lens as it seems to be a nice money to value lens (they say summer. hope they relase this summer, not next summer...haha).
As the result, I still don't have a lens now.......lmao

Pentax Dfa1530 is a zoom lens so it is much more versatile compare to others, imho.

Anyone has the 28-105? I would love to hear your thoughts. If any of you have a quote on the 28-105, can please pm me? I called a few of the usual shops and there's no stock now.

Thanks Jaiyen. I'm still thinking whether I need to pair a normal zoom with the K-1, and if so, should it be the 24-70 or the 28-105 ...

Great homework! :)
Here are some thoughts from me.

- Flare Resistance
Samyang - Ok

>> Really so so only

- Chromatic Aberrations
Samyang - Ok

>> Generally ok to the point of negligible as an issue

- Distortion (I believe this can be done with custom lens profile in PS/LR)
Samyang - High

>> "In theory" its just a custom profile, in practice, its a bit of work to self create one. :D
However, profiles for this lens created by others are available on the web.

- AF/MF
Samyang - MF
Pentax - AF/MF

>> AF does mean that the DFA15-30 can be used at the 20,24,28,30mm end as a AF "street" lens as opposed to just a slower MF only "landscape" lens for the Samyang.

- Filter thread
Samyang - Samyang Filter Holder SFH-14 made by Cokin (1 filter slot)

>> There is also the Haida, which I have.
Not sure about the Cokin, but the Haida is light tight to prevent internal reflections with high stop ND filters and the Haida ND has lower color cast.

Lastly, as Joe has mentioned, the DFA15-30 is a zoom.

Ephotozine has reviewed both the DFA15-30 and the Tamron.
It suggests that the DFA is way more even in sharpness between center and edge.
https://www.ephotozine.com/article/hd-pentax-d-fa-15-30mm-f2-8-ed-sdm-wr-review-29350

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/tamron-sp-15-30mm-f-2-8-di-vc-usd-review-27173

Some have remarked that this is because of the lack of the VC which gives the Pentax an edge.
Perhaps, Pentax also set a different test spec for the lens. (which can explain the price)

Another aspect is this.
Samyang 14 is great for the money.
But what about the 20, 24, 28mm option needed to fill the wide end of the usage range?
To find a 20mm, 24mm that can fully utilize the 36mp resolution of the K1, is not easy.

Hi benchan21, its all depends on which area of photography u r more into. I have the same problem as u when the k1 and dfa lenses announced. After much of soul searching, i have make up my mind as i more on land/city scape. So i just go for that uwa for now. The rest might be later years....:). Anw pentax still have some new lenses coming such as normal wide prime, uwa prime, standard prime, short Tele prime and a zoom fisheye. Date tbc but it stated in the roadmap. Just buy the one that u use most imho and my 2 cents worth. Cheers

Regarding which is good dfa2470 and dfa28105 i have not use it yet. But in website alot ppl surprised the good iq and rendering and praised the dfa28105.

Thanks! I think I'll try out the 28-105 first and see. It'll be more of a convenient zoom for holidays. So far, I really like the 31 and 43 on the K-1, but I haven't had the chance to really test them out fully.

Benchan21,

Can also consider Tamron 28-75 for travel woh. :X

Streets shot.

Peeping hole..

ISO 8000, did some PP and NR.

Stage performance. Somehow liveview don't seem to work well with the Tamron... got misfocus with it. :/
Below are using OVF:

This comes about after I got kind of fed up with a lot of the "theories" being thrown about in a PentaxForums thread that the PixS is not able to do studio still life using strobes.

The argument being that the flash won't fire off and/or can't fire off in quick succession for all 4 frames of PixS.

The idea is this :
2 flash on wireless triggers (in lightbox/softbox) - these fire at the same time to give 1 more stop of power for the same setting.
Hence, if both are at 1/4 power, they give 1/2 power of a single flash while retaining the charge at 1/4 usage. (ie. can fire roughly 4x w/o a long recycle time)

Since its indoors, set ambient to as dim as possible after setting up the shot (plus focusing, etc)
At f8, f11, I'd think its shutter speed should be slow enough to be in the seconds range.
Choose a shutter speed such that there is enough time to trigger the flash via remote (4x thru the PS sequence )

Took me just 20-25 mins to tinker up the setup.

Pixel Shift -for strobed still life test sample by jenkwang, on Flickr

2 YN560IV on light stands pointed to the same silver umbrella.
1 silver umbrella on the other side for fill
Flashes at 1/4 power

K1 set to pixel shift, M mode, ISO100, 5s per frame, f8 (lens : Vivitar 55mm macro)
5s timer release

Focus is on the Yashica-Mat name plate.

Basically, I set up the shot, and focus, turned off the lights that would affect the ambient exposure.
Released the timed shutter released.
Once picture taking started, I started my stopwatch and manually triggered the flashes with a YN603N II within the interval of each 5s frame.

Full size uploaded on my flickr (just click on the sample and navigate there ).

Thanks benchan21. It's the K1 lah... must be it.

Nice shots!

+1 to the good ole workhorse Tamron 28-75

Thanks JK. Never knew my 28-75 is revived! Wasn't a zoom lens user. Kinda of like it for travel. Only need is a wide prime. Still can't accept the size of the 15-30. ARGH!

Thanks for sharing more on the pixel shift and your set up for strobe. Interesting.
Need to get use on the pixel shift and it's editing function. argh.
