Tamron's new 24-70mm f2.8 VC


Hi guys! :) I've did a simple test using a measuring tape. The focus is spot on and i have no issue with front or back focusing. Again, all shots are taken on a tripod with picture style set to faithful and the point of focus is at the red number 12. All shots are in jpeg and no pp was done except for slightly increasing the exposure and cropping.

Camera settings are as shown below.

AF Point selection used was Manual selection: 1 pt AF. AF point was set to center and focused at the red number 12. In this picture, it appears as though it was sharp.

At 100% cropped however, we can see here that the focused area appears to be soft and not tack sharp as claimed by many reviewers with regards to it's center sharpness. This makes me wonder if my copy was a lemon. Please advise and let me know if this is actually "normal". TIA everyone for being very helpful. :)

is the VC off? as i am not sure if Tamron VC is tripod sensing.

I think the 24-70 was known to be very sharp at 24mm wide angle, not sure if it was known to be pin sharp at 70mm too.
 

Well I send it to Tamron service centre today and hope it comes back to me in a good condition. The service centre is really weird, when I stepped in, at the reception, I was just told to fill up a form with my personal particulars and the lens details. I also need to indicate what's wrong with the lens rather than having someone attend to me and perform any testing. I was then told to just leave the lens at the reception and wait for a technician to call me when it's ready.

When I told the reception that I need to see a technician as my case is unique for the lens is causing my camera to lock up, then only did someone came to look at the issue but still nothing was done. The technician just look at the incident whereby the mirror got lock up and then took his camera but didn't do any testing. They are more concerned and serious about my lens purchase from their staff who bought it at staff purchase with warranty and sold it to me. Sigh.. I just hope I get it back in a very good condition. I had good expectation of this lens from all the reviews and I hope I won't be disappointed. I don't even know how soon will I get it back. :(
 

you mean your 1DX mirror lock up problems were caused by the tamron lens?

Yup that is what I notice. Usually happens after the camera went to sleep after a minute. When I half pressed the shutter, to wake it up, even though the aperture information is there, when I finally tried to take a shot, the mirror will lock up with a very strong vibrating sound as though I was shooting at 12 frames per sec even though it was set to single shot. I have tried it with VC on and off and it always happens. Doesn't happen with oem lenses though.
 

I see...... i guess lucky that it is not a 1DX problem and rather a Tamron problem then.... This lens seems to be having much problems with Canon. First the 6D battery drain now the 1DX.

You sent it @ changi right? is soo far for me that i am postponing the idea. haiz.

Yup I send it to Changi. My advise to you would be, be sure to know what is wrong with the lens before you head down cause you have to write down what is wrong with the lens yourself instead of having someone assessing it.

They got back to me asking me to take my lens back as they could not find any problem with it. So I ask if they could assist me calibrating the lens to my cam and they say can but will take 3 to 5 days to do it.

Just FYI: the effect is done using 3 layers:
Top layer: gaussian blur with a mask and graduate filter to one side of the light (copy the mid layer and change the graduate filter to the other side)
Mid layer: gaussian blur with a mask and graduate filter to the other side of the light
Base layer: original sharp pic

Not that difficult, just have to get the graduate filter to start and end at the right place.
