agreeded, using arca swiss ball head... not dunno which long plate to buy... any recommendation.

Sorry to bring up this thread, read all the post and almost all are comparing to Canon lens instead.

How about this tamron compared to nikon 70-300mm VR ?

Thanks

Read the May issue of Practical Photography from newsstands. They tested 5 different 70-300 lenses in the "budget" category.

In terms of VC/IS, the tampon came out best.
In terms of IQ, the Nikon came out best…
Overall, they chose the Nikon…
But this is only for Nikon users :) Canon users will either have to buy the 70-300L or just get the Tamron...

Yeah I'm more leaning against the Nikon instead of Tamron. However I would try to get a copy of the mentioned mag to read through first.

Since both of the lens priced quite close to each other too. :D

Dammit, i only just realized…my spell check auto corrects TamRon with tamPon!

I researched online with regards to some "sweet" spots for this lens and here's what i found and it is really much better.

70-135mm sweet spot at f/8
200mm sweet point at f/11
300mm sweet point af f/11

As for my picture style, i'm using standard with sharpness maxed out and Colour Tone +1 (Using Canon)

Anyone else care to share you settings? I find this pretty sharp now.

Im contemplating between two lens, Nikkor 70-300mmVR or Tamron 70-300mm VC
I've saw many pictures taken by this lens in some forums and samples from reviews
But I'd like to see picture samples taken by tamron in this forum ... thanks

If you already have a nikon camera I would advice to get the 70-300mm VR. For the price to pay for the tamron, I would think the Nikkor version is more worth it, assuming they both give good IQ. And the resale value is usually higher for first party lens.

Here's a sample of this lens at 300mm F11 taken indoors.
Do you consider this "acceptable" IQ? Is it relatively sharp enough? Or is it very bad IQ

the image looks blur. The issue may not be the IQ of the lens.

the shutter speed maybe too slow, because you apeture is small @ f/11.

can you provide the info of iso and shutter speed. is the vc on or off?

Hi,

Nikon user here, could any one share their experience with this lens on a D700? im considering replaceing my 80-200 2.8 AFS with this as i only ever use it for events and the d700 should make up for the slower speed. most important for me would be the AF speed and accuracy, both daylight and indoor tungsten lighting.

thanks in advance!

ISO400, VC ON, 300mm, 1/5 shutter.
That's one problem with this lens…using it at A/V mode doesn't really work indoors at all.
I know i'll need at least a 1/200 shutter speed at 300mm but i also need to shoot F11 at 300mm to get a "sweeter" spot, but being indoors, i can't get 1/200 shutter without having ISO1600 which becomes grainy and pointless. I can't shoot at f5.6 at 300mm, it would just be too soft and horrible.

Here's another one outdoors with a faster shutter at 1/125, still not ideal but it's already outdoors and with ISO400, i just find to have to shoot at f8-11 is quite hard unless you're under direct sunlight! I'm still "experimenting" with this lens…am still not confident with it when i do need a telephoto to shoot stuff…i'd still rather shoot with my 24-105 and then crop it if i have to shoot tele…

Hmmm, I used it wide open @ 300mm and sharpness is quite acceptable. See pic below, as focus is on the shoe. 1/100sec 300mm f/5.6 iso200 VC on. AE mode. Vignetting was added in PP so ignore that... did not sharpen.

It could be good it you post a example of 300mm @ f/5.6 with a shutter speed of more that 1/300 with VC on to better under what you mean by soft.

There are a lot of report that the first batches of these lenses are with issues... it will be better to get it fix while under warranty.

i think i better bring it down to Tamron for a look…Can they fix it in SG? Just bring the lens to them?
I tried taking some at 1/300 at ISO200 300mm at F5.6…the images were NO WHERE near what you got with yours…think i'll drop off my lens at the service center on monday.

Here's another sample…still not good..

Yes I agree, the center of the picture is not as sharp as it should be. It is just slightly off, but a slight off means a lot @ 300mm. I would suggest that you first do a focus checking test before sending down to the service center. So that they can have a clear picture of the problem. It will also let you know if just need some cam-to-lens tuning or a case of a lemon.

Hope this link helps:

please remember to mount on a tripod, turn off VC, spot AF in the center, 2 sec delay, and if room is not bright, use mirror lock up to eliminate blur-ness due to camera shake.

yes. from the result, it seems that the lens do not have front or back focusing issues. have you tried it with smaller apeture f/6.3 f/8 f/11 etc. does the sharpness gets any better, or just as bad. it maybe a case of a lemon. i hope TSC will be able to help solve this issue. i have no experience with them as my 70-300 is from moscow and my 90mm macro is working fine.

Yea, i'll still bring it down anyways nag get them to do a check and let them do their test and if they say nothing wrong, then maybe it's just my skill or me being picky :)
