Tamron 17-50 f2.8

Happened to be in Alan Photo yesterday and picked up this lens (thanks to the reviews and samples posted). A little soft at f2.8 but nothing that can't be fixed in PS. As good as my 17-40 f4L at equivalent apertures (so I'm selling off my "L"! ;) ). No front or back focusing issues with my 20D. Much better in low light situations (obviously), and the bokeh is rather good. Quite compact and light as well.

Aiya, Canon mount have a lot but Nikon mount is not anywhere.

Hopefully can find a good alternative by next week. Enjoy your new toy!

with so many good feedbacks, I am wondering how is the field curvature mentioned here,

like to consider this lens....any wide-end pics to show?

If you shoot a flat object (eg, newspaper pasted on a wall) at f2.8, the 4 extreme corners will be OOF. Gets better when you stop down because the DOF increases, so the 4 corners also become in focus. I only shoot landscape and portraits with this lens so it does not really affect my pics.

Bought this lens yesterday. Did some tests at 50mm against the Canon 50mm 1.8 II. Slightly less contrast (barely actually) at 2.8 but at 5.6 and above, contrast and color surpasses the prime lens. Sharpness is equal to the prime at all apertures! A gem for its price.

One observation though is that at 50mm, the Tamron's angle of view is wider than the prime. Not sure if at 17mm is that also the case..

Anyone from Tithes? Hear our Nikon cries!

;p

Pardon me but this lens cannot be used on full frame bodies?

have question:
does it give the same FOV as the tamron 17-35mm. will this supersede the 17-35mm? i dont mind having a distortion coz i think this is inevitable to wide angle lenses.

tamron lenses are designated EF mount, although they are designed for 1.6 crop cameras. so unlike the EF-S lenses, they can be mounted on any canon EF body. including the full frame ones. but u may get some vignetting at the wide end.

Would like to know from what focus length onward that it won't show vigneting, anyone tried? Surely 18mm will have hard vigneting, but how about like around 22-24mm?

Hmm, I tot vignetting will go away when we stoppped down to bigger F stops, even at 17mm? i may be wrong

I try mounting EF-S lens (Canon kits 18-55mm modded)or lens for APS-C sensor on film camera before, at the widest range, they are not designed for fullframe camera sensor. It will get hard vignetting from 18-20 or 22mm, then vignetting from 22-24mm. Hard vignetting is physical barrier/blocking which I don't think can be removed by stopping down???

That's why I like to know more about the Tamron one before I commit on it.

Is the Tamron SP 17-50mm F2.8 lens you guys are getting are made in Japan or Made in China? I noticed that the early batch is made in Japan, and now the new stock are made in China (or assembled in china) :)

Based on experience with the tamron 17-35 I had before, the 17-50 IQ is quite noticeably better which says alot.

well worth it than 17-35 if IQ is better unless you need it for FF body. you get f2.8 thru out, better IQ and longer focal length.

theres one way for u to find out... take ur FF camera to shop and shoot some test shots..

i recall there was a review of the sigma 10-20, which they tried with a FF lens, and they said vignetting did occur, but only till about 13mm.

Tried 10-20mm on my film before, I think it's more like 14mm. But useable.
So if 17-50mm can be used from 24-50mm at f/2.8 on full frame, it would be very interesting.
