Tamron 150-600mm F5-6.3 ultra-telephoto zoom

Cool. Am gg to do so. Looking for Sony mount. Hope the rental companies will have them.

To test wildlife gears, it takes some time to really come up with a conclusion as there are a lot of things that play a part which we can't control like the animal behaviors,lighting,distant...etc

Looking more at sports such as the DBS River Regatta or the Yacht sailing at SG River (Cant remember the name... haha).

Just checked that SGD 36 is for Canon mount. No Sony (at the moment) :(

Sports may need a longer time as these events don't take place so regularly. But at least 3 days of rental should give u a rough estimation of the lens performance whether it suits u or not. So 3 days is probably u can only shoot one of these event.

K, thanks for the pointers.

Weather has been horrid for birding.. haze, rain, cloudy.. but what the hell..

After much practise, I got the hang of shooting birds in flight with the Tamron 150-600mm with my D810. Headed down to Pasir Ris Park to shoot the Grey Herons (tons of them, anytime of the day actually)

Caught this guy landing on the top of the tree. Decided not to overcrop the photo to show a bit more of motion.

Nice.. Typically what kinda aperture, shutter speeds and ISO is required for this kinda lighting (seemed dreary weather) and still able to get relatively sharp BIF shots?

Based on my usage (I don't use tripod, camera is handheld using my body for support) on my D810, I set the following as baseline

"M" mode, Auto ISO with max of ISO6400, minimum of 800. 3D tracking in the center, VR on, AF-C, focus priority.

Then I will adjust aperture from f/6.3, 1/500 (dim, under shade conditions) to f/8,1/8000 (optimal, easy in outdoor area even in cloudy dreary weather) Thats around 5 stop range.

The trickiest part is getting AF to lock, the D810 3D AF works great in open areas.

The Tamron 150-600mm is optimal at f/8, given a choice I'll shoot at f/8 all the time. D810 handles up to ISO 6400 easily. Shutter speed I try to get 1/1000 at least.

Some shots I took at Pasir Ris Park. The Tamron 150-600mm may not have the exotic FL coatings of the Nikon primes, but if you're careful bouht the lighting, the lens gives great colors and details..

Even wide open at f/6.3 you can get great sharpness with a soft bokeh

Given more time, I prefer to shoot at f/8 :)

Been shooting for 3+ months with this lens. Have to say I'm very happy with it's performance for the price, so long as you know and work within the lens' limits. Some shots taken with this lens:
