Tamron 150-600mm F5-6.3 ultra-telephoto zoom

PDAF - Phase Detection AF (i.e. shooting via OVF)
CDAF - Contrast Detetion AF (i.e. shooting via liveview)

Oh, IC. I thought a camera is fixed with 1 type of focusing system only? I am using D600, so the focusing use only Phase Detection AF regardless you are shooting through view finder or live view. Am I correct?

View finder uses PDAF. If you use liveview, it uses CDAF. The D600 CDAF performance isn't very good. (Before the D750/D810, Nikon's CDAF has not been their major strength.. Its still not a strength, but CDAF has caught up to a good level)

Focusing on DSLR will always be better with PDAF especially if the object is moving or your lens is a long lens.

Thanks for the info. I do not know about it until now. Anyway, with regards to the losing of communication between the lens and body, I will need to do more testing; I am using the view finder, not the liveview.

Taken this morning...

Not sure if any one tried it before, but the Tammy 150-600 is excellent for portraits as well...

Hi,
Any Canon 7D2 user with this lens?? I found my copy had a live view AF issue (only happen in live view) with 7D2 under the below condition:
1) Under live view setting, set Continuous AF to Disable.
2) Now using live view, focus something closer than the minimum focusing distance (to force the lens to search till the minimum focusing distance).
3) Once the Tamron 150-600mm search focus till the minimum focusing distance, it'll hang (normally it should search focusing towards the infinity after hit minimum focusing distance) and won't respond on any new AF command in live view.
4) To get back to normal operation, you can: (a) switch out of live view and use normal viewfinder to achieve AF, then the live view AF will be back to normal or (b) Using the manual focus to focus till very close to focus, then your live view focus will be back to normal.

Can 7D2 user with this lens can help to see does your lens had this issue?? Not sure is it a common issue? If yes, will check with Tamron before sending in... need to use the lens.

By the way, live view AF with 7D2 is very slow... doesn't seem to be normal.

Have a nice day.

Sounds like it is a problem with your camera not the lens.

Hi,
Sounds like it is a problem with your camera not the lens.
Initially, I also thought might be my Camera, but it doesn't happen when I use it with my EF 400mm F5.6L (Live View AF is way faster than the Tamron 150-600mm), so the 7D2 is perform normally.
It also don't happen when I use the Tamron 150-600mm with my 60D... although live view focus is not fast, but at least it don't hang at minimum focusing distance, so it only seem to happen when using it with 7D2.

My conclusion is if many 7D2 user had the same problem with this lens, I think it might be a firmware issue for the Tamron 150-600mm when using with 7D2 (the inconvenience of using third party lens with new camera... that's why I still keep my EF 400mm F5.6L) and will wait till there is a firmware update before sending in.

Have a nice day.

Hi,
After some more testing... seem like the issue will happen only at longer focal length... 350mm and longer. At focal length shorter than 350mm, it doesn't seem to happen.

By the way, one way to make sure the lens will search focus till the minimum focusing distance is to put the lens cap on.

Have a nice day.

When there is not enough light, your camera will not be able to lock focus. Your 400 is F5.6. The tamron at longer focal lengths the aperture is smaller than F5.6. And at low light, or no light (when you put the lens cap on), it will not be able to focus. Then it comes to your camera, what happens when it cannot lock focus? will it keep trying? or will it give up. And does it react properly with only Canon lenses or for all lenses.

Sounds like the new 7Dm2 has some new firmware algorithm that cause 3rd party lenses to have some issues in low light focusing. This is not the first time and will not be the last time. It happened to many brands with new models coming out with firmware not compatible with 3rd party lenses. The lens itself does not control when to start and stop focusing hunting, the camera does.

If a lot of 7D2 user had this problem with this lens, then it's a lens firmware issue and a new lens firmware update (if available) should solve the issue. That's the purpose of this post... to see does it happen to other user. If no, it might be my 7D2 or my lens is using an older firmware. Below are some test I had perform:

1) Canon EF 400mm F5.6L @ F5.6 with 7D2 Live View AF test with lens cap on
When AF button is press to engage AF, the lens search focus till hit minimum focusing distance (look at the scale) and then start searching towards the infinity.
Once hit infinity, the lens stop searching for focus. Press AF button to engage AF again and the above search is perform again. Expected and normal behavior.

2) Tamron 150-600mm @ 200mm @ F5.6 with 7D2 Live View AF test with lens cap on
When AF button is press to engage AF, the lens search focus till hit minimum focusing distance (look at the scale) and then start searching towards the infinity.
Once hit infinity, the lens stop searching for focus. Press AF button to engage AF again and the above search is perform again. Expected and normal behavior.

3) Tamron 150-600mm @ 400mm @ F5.6 with 7D2 Viewfinder AF test with lens cap on
When AF button is press to engage AF, the lens search focus till hit minimum focusing distance (look at the scale) and then start searching towards the infinity.
Once hit infinity, the lens stop searching for focus. Press AF button to engage AF again and the above search is perform again. Expected and normal behavior.

4) Tamron 150-600mm @ 400mm @ F5.6 with 60D Live View AF test with lens cap on
When AF button is press to engage AF, the lens search focus till hit minimum focusing distance (look at the scale) and then start searching towards the infinity.
Once hit infinity, the lens stop searching for focus. Press AF button to engage AF again and the above search is perform again. Expected and normal behavior.

5) Tamron 150-600mm @ 400mm @ F5.6 with 7D2 Live View AF test with lens cap on
When AF button is press to engage AF, the lens search focus till hit minimum focusing distance (look at the scale) and stop searching for focus.
Press AF button to engage AF again and nothing happen... the lens stop responding to any new AF command. Not normal behavior.

What if you remove the lens cap and press AF button again?

What about try zooming out to <400mm, is this happening until which focal length or do you have to off and on the body to work at frozen point?

Another is to check and compare your body settings, so you isolate any body setting related possibility?

Please try and share your findings again?

Have a nice day.

You need to realize that how all these 3rd party lens companies make their lenses work with the cameras out there. Unless there is some collaboration (like how Sony owns part of Tamron, and how Tokina and Pentax is in the same groups, and how Sony and CZ has a deal), most of 3rd party lens companies have to reverse engineer lens mount software. So when a company release a new cam with different software, 3rd party lenses can get affected. That is why Sigma released the USB dock to update their newer range of lenses. I do not see that from Tamron. If it is indeed a firmware clash, and a firmware refresh is needed from Tamron, you probably have to wait quite a while for it. The smart thing now is to search online now and see if anyone else with your combo is experiencing the same problem. One thing to note, before the USB dock, to make older Sigma lenses work ok with new cameras, the lenses needed to be re-chiped, not a firmware update. So a lot depends on how Tamron designed the 150-600.

The other thing is, I have been hearing a fair bit of complaints on AF inconsistency with the 7Dm2 from new owners. I am not sure of the details, since I am not a Canon user. You might want to do more research in that direction also.

Have a nice day.

It doesn't sound right if it can function "normally" at wide end but not at tele end.
If I may ask u:-
1).Are the 7D2 200mm @ F5.6 and 400mm @ F5.6(both live view) tested at the same time with only zoom changed and at the same distant and same subject?
2). Are the 7D2 400mm(viewfinder) and 400mm (live view) tested at the same time with only live view mode ON and OFF changed and same distant and subject?
3). Are 60D and 7D2 test also performed at the same time with only camera swapped and same distant and subject?

I believe it is a fairly straightforward case of 7D2 not being supported by the 150-600 lens since Tamron would not have been reverse engineer the AF algorithms in the yet to be released 7D2 at the time of releasing the lens to the mass market near the beginning of this year.

I would be surprised if the Sigma 150-600 lenses, whenever they are released in the near future, do not work well with the 7D2 since Sigma should have had the chance to account for 7D2's AF algorithm by then.

Dont be too sure... sigma is already out for a few weeks in certain parts of the world.

You're right. Then maybe will have to use the USB dock. The Sigma is a monster (weight) though.

Friends in Taiwan already have the lens for a few weeks now. very sharp but cost quite a bit more than the tamron.

the sigma contemporary version (instead of sports) could be a consideration then. same specs, less glass. suppose to be as sharp in the centre, but lose out in the corners, which shld be ok for wildlife shots
