Switching to sony A7 (from m4/3)

Not surprised. The nex5t AF feels a tad slower than em5 and epl5. The other thing that Sony dun hv is a good sensor cleaner and weatherproofing. Not sure how good is their image stabilization.
The A7/r have no image stabilisation.

Yep.. IS on lenses.. But some primes (35/2.8) dont have IS..
Yup, for me that's a weak point. I prefer the in-body IS of my Alpha DSLR.

Actually, I can achieve maximum use of my set of SLR legacy lenses, from 24mm to 300mm (this 300mmf4.5 is only 710 gm) by owning both the EM-1 and A7r. On the road, if I were to cover up the cameras' names, no one would be able to tell the difference, whether one is m43 and the other an FF. How I wish I am in my early 30s again.

Congratulations to your switch. If you have moved, hope you find harmony with your choice. :D All cameras are as a tool. The most important is still the person who press that trigger.

U aren't ranting and have a good point but progress is always good. (Real progress)

A month ago I thought the EM-1 and 12-40, 40-150 will be all enough to clear my bonuses and now all of a sudden we woke up to Sony FF and FE lenses, Panny GM-1, 2 new lenses from Panny and Pana-Leica 15/1.7, the Leica C , Pentax K3 etc Honestly it's getting difficult just keeping up haha.

Newer tech doesn't guarantee great photos but humans are wired to work towards bragging rights. I've friends who have pre-ordered the EM-1 and are now asking me if I wan their set as they decided to jump to Sony FF.

This is why I've a lot of respect for those who work their gear till their limits and only upgrade when their gear limits their skills ; not the other way around.

But thinking about this , I somehow feel that recognition should be given to learning the basics like rules of third , composition are skills that aren't aren't commonplace nowadays.

And thats my point. I love new gear, but I have a friend who consistently produces the most amazing shots with either a crap handphone (non instagram) or the EP1. A good camera but nothing outstanding. His focus is totally on the finding that image, and what he produces is better than majority of stuff I see online.

It's your eye and mode of seeing which is the greatest piece of 'tech'. Upgrade that first, everything else is secondary.
Classic example was the Canon photo safari...I watched with amusement as people lugged around MASSIVE cases of gear, only to walk as far as the esplenade to take a few "snapshots". It just seems like acquisition for its own sake.

For me as much as the EM-1 looks great, I wont upgrade as it wont produce any "more" than what I am getting now with OMD. The new lens maybe, body no.

Well said.

Buy what you need, not what others tell you that you need.

You might be right. Only the laziest or clumsiest photographers who shoots with just one zoom lens the whole day would be interested in the RX10.
Or worse, the ignorant ones who are willing sacrifice 0.3" in sensor size just to save two thousand dollars instead of getting a decent
GH3 + 12-35mmf2.8 + 35-100mm f2.8 combo.

Sorry but this just smacks of ignorance. Actually its the most efficient and confident photographer who can go out with 1 lens (more kudos if its fixed/non zoom) and come back with great shots. How many lens can you utilize at once? Moving to using primes was the best thing I ever did , as it forced me to move my feet and perspective rather than get lazy on a zoom.

Recently i spent 9 days in Tokyo just walking and shooting for 12/14hrs a day. I took 3 primes, a zoom (which I never used), and an RX100 for ninja shots. Each day I took 2 primes and the RX100, and by halfway through the trip i was taking just a prime and the Sony P&S. I learned so much more by dialling my eye into just one focal length most days , and feel much more confident with my gear for it. I took the advice to do this from a professional photographer who use to say "..the camera doesn't take the picture" to me all the time.

I don't missed the IBIS after switch from OM-D EM5 to a FF DSLR.
I think the most important, is to build a system around the lens or lenses for your photo needs and style.

Camera come and go fast nowadays..

I will go for A7 immediately if i already have good FF legacy lenses to fully ultilised all the glasses I paid for..LOL

Kinda off tangent , but kinda glad to see three things :

- that the MFT forum seems to be one of the most participated forums around,

- it's acceptable to discuss things out of MFT here (k la, not off tangent of course)

- there r pple here who makes lot of sense and whom will not hesitate to burn those who troll at the stake.

Thanks pple :)

I wouldn't miss the IBIS from my OMD either because I think it isn't very good.

Just IMHO, I came from FF to M4/3. If you ask me, do you miss FF? I will say Yes, i miss the DOF that FF can produce. But apart from that, as of now my OMD can serve me very good and one more thing is I have a problem to carry may SLR with my kid and a stroller ;P. So different people has different reason. I can say the IBIS is very good, I used to use FF lense without image stabilization then now with this IBIS feels like I have a robot hand that steady with slower shutter :D.
But A7, hell yeahh... it is very interesting :)

I totally agree that "the man behind the gun" that will make a good picture.

Just my 2 cents

Actually primes or zooms, each has their place. Primes usually gives a larger aperture but zooms give more flexibility. For the casual or art photographer, primes might be great. For some other work like events, and travel (or extreme sports) shooters, a zoom might make more sense.

You are right about one thing, that the photographer makes the picture, not the camera.

Spot on ! any camera is a tool.. even an iphone. Its the person behind the camera....

Oops... I am one of those 'laziest or clumsiest' photographers. When I am using my OMD, I shoot only with my 12-50mm lens (in the past it is the 14-42mm), and when I am with my 7D, I shoot only with my Siggy 17-70mm. And I am also one of the 'ignorant' ones who are willing to sacrifice my sensor size to save thousands of dollars by using only my mobile phone and OMD on vacations or work purposes... I should spend more money to upgrade to a GH3 + 12-35mm f2.8 + 35-100mm f2.8 for my mirrorless camera and a 5DmkIII or D800 with a 24-70mm f2.8 for my DSLR...

Sorry:embrass:

Wow! You mean you have so many systems? Why?

I'm lazier then. Either my smartphone, or just any other camera that conveniently is in my bag (recently GX7 with 20mm).

Snap this the other night with my phone - http://instagram.com/p/fZZI-uLRN4/

Any zoom I need I just walk in closer :p

Anyhows, let's skip whatever digressing la.

With the Alpha 7 coming on board mirrorless interchangeable lens category is no longer so exclusive (think, LEICA previously). While it opens up a new segment altogether, most FF DSLR users still won't give up their system entirely. Gen 1 products won't straight away solve all kinks and knocks, so things will continue to improve.

That's why there are different products and manufacturers catering to different needs?

Go enjoy taking photos la!
