[SunChasersSG] Newbies Outing (Part 18) - Sunrise @ Merlion Park 18 Sept 2010 (Pics)

,
Hi Uncle Wildcat, I like this photo. Very fine sharpness and vibrance on the building.

Thanks, I had a good shifu - Kit. Now he arrows me do stuff :embrass:
I'll probably arrange for a shoot when I have more time next month or November.

This is nice.. calm and serene..
The Maybank one was due to a fire that broke out which caused the hole we all saw yesterday.

Thanks. Ah, I haven't been reading papers... just found out about the Maybank fire.

oooo...so u r taking tis arh... i should have stand in front of ur cam when u told me too..

I think near 3mins shot. You have to stand there and talk to me long long... but I would have chased you away by then

Ya mah.. That shd be the way.. But remember only me and Jacobs eligible..

Rest still must call Uncle.. esp Wilcat and DD123 and ZCA

Err.. dun call me uncle. No need reminder that I'm old. ;(

I like this pic :) . How to achieve the background cloud effect ?

Long exposure. Had my ND filters, spirit leveller, and most importantly, my $16 IR remote for the Nikon. Missing that last week means I could only take 30sec pictures maximum. My fav exposure length is between 2.5 to 3.5 mins. Any longer and I tend to lose track of how much light is changing (e.g. WC#1 which I feel is a wee bit tad exposed, caused by the sky brightening quite drastically in the last min, and I even cut short my calculated time by 30secs already).

It would appear to be simple to use ND filters. 10 stop filter, and you just multiply your normal exposure by 1000 times (approx). The problem is when that x1000 shot takes more than 5mins and light conditions are changing every minute. So you have to start adjusting for the changing lights and that's where things get tricky. A lot of fortune telling finger counting at the last min and once you press the close shutter, that's it ;)

For that reason, I seldom go more than 3.5mins for a single exposure in morning sunrise changing lights until I get more proficient in my light counting.

This is one of the first time I've done a 2.5min exposure for pano (3 shots total), which means it takes 8mins to complete it. Plenty of time for light to change (and clouds to move... sometimes beyond the boundary of stitching ability) and I was hoping for the best (did some manual adjustments in post processing for the last pic which was brightening very quickly). With a shorter exposure, I probably still could have done it (because the water was still very still before the Merlion spouts water) but I already had my workflow in mind when I started. The result is the LE cloud movements you see in the pic.

Sorry for the late submission. Was busy over the weekend and only just got time to start processing my shots. Really 'chasing' sun yesterday as I woke up late and only reached there around 6.50  Missed the blue hour shots and only have these to share. C&C welcomed ;)

oh you were there too? I love the #2.. nice!

Okay, I just had a question and answered myself already so I think no need answer but it's really silly so I thought maybe every one can have a good laugh at this..

mimik07's #1 and my #3 are both LE. And so is NNB's #3, although barely noticeable, so ours should be the same.

So why would all our pictures have solid spokes of the Singapore Flyer's wheel arh? Wouldn't it have been smoothened out already.

Anyway I answered my own question already :bsmilie:. Anyone knows?

I feel so silly

Flyer wasn't on?

Yes I was there pretty late so didn't get to see you. You left early right?

Yep, ran off before 7.30

I saw both of you there, so you definitely had the opportunity to meet each other...

I still remember the first remark that wildcat made to me.... could see that he couldn't stop laughing! :D

I remember peeping at this on your LCD immediately after you shot it... but the sky looked nothing like that? You underexpose by a lot? It was much brighter by that time.

Wow u guys have such awesome shots. Envy the way u guys capture the sun. Many thanks to Bro ding for organising this outing and lending/teaching me about ND filters. And also to Bro korbidp3k for teaching me the black card method (but i still failed ). Picked up many valuable tips and learned new knowledge about landscape shooting from everyone

Here are my shots for the day, the rest was too bad to be put up here. Looking forward to the future Sunchasers outing! Gonna be practicing and improving on my skills in the meantime.

Hi Kevil...
I hope that after this outing, and picking up valuable tips from the people who have guided you, you can see some improvement in your photography.
I would say you got the basics quite well.
- your horizons are pretty level
- your buildings are upright
- your exposures are quite accurate (not too dark or bright)

Next thing is to work on composition and improving sharpness.
I find most of your crops are too 'tight' around the buildings.

You think Sg Flyer is McDonalds har? 24hrs operation :D

WC#4 - if I am not wrong (or remember incorrectly), that should be SnagIt. Okay... so I was bored. Wasn't going to be another boring CBD shot :bsmilie: (although my original intention was just the opposite of this, which is what I did to the people at the steps of Merlion area)
