Sony Zeiss FE24-70/F

The only thing we can know for sure is that the Sony filters are designed by Zeiss and uses Zeiss's proprietary T* coating.

A comment from another forum:

"They even look physically the same and come in the same neat clamshell style case, though Zeiss announced its version in 2010 and Alpha branded versions were available long before that. I'm guessing Zeiss saw the opportunity to make some money by selling them in other sizes, though only offers "POL" and UV whereas Sony only offers CPL, ND and MC (clear protector) no UV as it's not relevant to digital sensors."

thanks bro for the info :-)

bad point about b+w filter is that it is too good quality. if you happen to drop your camera bag or worst still the lens and the filter gets dented, it will be super tough to remove the filter without professional help. with hoya you just need a pair of pliers and you can cut/peel the aluminum ring out kekeke

Too good quality also a problem. ... kekeke....

No offense, but never heard of this brand before...

No offense,"PIXEL" is a china brand, they made filter, wireless flash trigger, remote trigger etc,it was quite alright actually and since it was included with the lens, just use it first and see how it go :bsmilie:

I'm waiting for pixel to sell a wired remote with timelapse for the new multi terminal.

All they need is the cable

What do you shoot with time lapse? As in videos?? Stars? Long exposure?? City?

I shoot mostly people portraits and events... like birthday party for friends....

My guess is no since the Nex doesn't have a shutter release port. I have heard of the official Sony wired remote which inserts into the micro USB port but doubt the cheap third parties offer this yet.

I would def want to be among the first to get one :)

Thanks for the info if that's the case I may let my wires remote for a mount. Yeah sony accessories are never cheap.

Just received my lens. For those who wanted a small setup, I will suggest to stay with your FE35. The lens also feel very plastic for its price. So what you are getting is an expensive, plastic, slightly bulky lens. The only plus point is that it is light.

I have not really brought it out. Initial test shots shows that the out of focus area do not have smooth bokeh. In fact, the highlights are overblown. I need to bring it out for proper tests.

However, focus is quick and spot on. There is a little problem though. After focusing at infinity, it is reluctant to focus at near distances. Have to give focusing ring a turn then it will af near.

The operation is near silent. It makes one wonder for such a light lens that operates so silently, the lens elements must be really thin and light. It makes me wonder how many elements are plastics molded?

It definitely doesnt give one an assured feeling, this lens. However, it will be ineresting to explore the many features built in the A7 system that is otherwise greyed out.

Other than being light and unlock all features in the A7. In my casual testing, the lens seems to be parfocal. This is useful for those taking video.

More to follow....

hmmm stuck focusing sounds like a problem / issue that is mechanical. if it happens consistently you may want to bring it back to sony

It is not stuck focusing. In center focusing, the square is quite big. I am suspecting it has difficulty determining if it should focus at the far or near subject. It seems to give preference to infinity. I have yet to try zone or wide focus zones. I am manually giving the focusing ring a slight turn to let it know I am choosing the near subject.

I think the initial impression of this lens can turn people off. But it may grow on you. So I will not judge so quickly.

Looking forward to part II.

Initial random photos i took today with this lens turned out rather disappointing to me..the "magic" i got from the 35mm is totally lost with this lens.
I just hope over the weekend when i do a proper shoot and see how it handles in photoshop..i really hope i don't get too disappointed with the lens.

Disappointing in what sense?

Disappointing in what sense?

In a sense, the colours are rather muted. The image didn't pop like the 35 and it somehow doesn't look as sharp...
I'll draw a conclusion after Sunday...maybe the random snaps are really just because i'm not shooting properly..

My 2nd day with the lens and my 1st day bringing it out for some test shots. Today, I will try to draw on the positives of this lens.

I have confirmed that this is a parfocal lens. This means once your subject is in focus, you can zoom in and out and your subject will remain in focus.

Vignetting can be easily corrected in post. Mild vignetting can appear all the way up to f8. This lens can be used all the way to f22. The vignetting should disappear by f11. Interestingly, I did not witness the weak corners.

This lens should be having a lens profile that should correct the distortion. The appearance of apps in camera means that lenses will work in tandem with apps to achieve what would otherwise be extremely costly to manufacture. There are obvious distortions. Will have to see what Sony will do to correct it in apps.

This is a f4 zoom lens. Do not expect smooth creamy OoF area like this is a f2.8 prime lens. DoF is not razor thin. MFD is 0.4 cm. You need subject isolation, move closer. OoF is OoF. It is not an art. Don't call it a bokeh.

With the above in mind, you will be able to appreciate this lens better. It may not be perfect. It should be used to its strength.
