Sony Zeiss FE24-70/F

based on Sony site, currently this lens is not Hybrid AF compatible.. is it really so or just the site list is not updated ? Definitely not satisfied with the AF tracking now (with center focus and AF-C)

There's 2 factors with Hybrid AF..First, the camera firmware must understand the lens and second, the lens firmware must be able to understand the camera.
I'm pretty sure the Lens is updated for Hybrid AF because the A7 is hybrid AF isn't it? And this lens was made for that?

As for the NEX6...i don't think that camera firmware has this lens in it's database at all..
I have yet to try it on the nex6 though...i shall try it tonight...I so far only used this lens on the 7r which isnt hybrid anyways....
Either way, i don't think the a7 hybrid af is fast in the first place.

Does AF tracking work with centre focus? And it's easy to see if a lens-camera combo is hybrid af or not; just see the screen in shooting mode, u will see the PDAF points overlay if hybrid af is there.

Agree this is more of a body firmware issue. It maybe nt as gd as advertised but definitely better than CDAF. I bought this lens for the hybrid AF =(

Nope, Phase Detect AF does NOT work on the NEX6 with this lens..
I'm not sure if it's because the lens doesn't do it or the body..i'm guessing it's body...
BUT, if the A7 also dun have..then something wrong is wrong...cannot be Sony release new body and new lens but both don't understand each other?
Then again, there isn't any lens correction for this lens either..so maybe Sony really didn't put this into the cameras at all.yet

comparing the size of the FE 24-70/4 OSS and the EF 24-70/4 IS.

With lens hood at 24mm. Note the EF got a thicker rear lens cap.

The 2 lenses extended to 70mm. Both lenses have protector filter attached so will appear longer than actual.

With Metabones adapter attached to the EF lens

diameter of the 2 lenses. 67 to 77mm filter size.

Both with their native mount stand just as long in length at both 24 and when extended to 70mm. Of course the EF when adapted to A-mount will be longer with the Metabones adapter. The diameter of the EF is one size bigger. The FE is much lighter. The EF feels more sturdy with its weight. I also like the EF manual focusing ring better as it is more predictable. The EF also comes with a macro mode. The 6D with this EF 24-70 will be just a tad bigger than the A7 with the FE 24-70. So those with 2 systems may simply just want to add an adapter and use the EF lens on the A7. Will explore more....

Ah.. thats weird.. the lens was announced together with a7 ... by right it should be supported out of the box and firmware update always take ages to come

What about cost comparison? Also, given that the lenses are similar in length, yet works at different flange distance, it means that the glass in the sony zeiss have to be designed radically different to work at the shorter flange, and keeping the size down so u get some savings directly in terms of filters, and indirectly in the form tripods and carrying accessories. Kudos to sony for that.

Also, once adapted, IS is gone. And while MF is by wire, the sony lcd will display distance scale when MF-ing with native glasses. So we just gotta hope the lens profiles and hybrid AF issue gets settled soon and, to quote the Lego movie, everything is awesome!

IS is retained with the metabones v3 adapter. Take a look at supported lenses. That said, i'll still stick with native lenses whenever possible =)

The nex6 will need lens software installation or a firmware update (which it might not get) for the FE 2470 to be pdaf compatible on the nex 6. When the nex 6 was just released, all the previous e mount lenses had to go through some kinda software installation while connected to the body for the camera to support the lens for pdaf. I had to do it one by one for my different lenses and it was really troublesome. Later on they released firmwares where all the newer lenses were included within a single installation.

E mount lenses are very software orientated. For the body to recognise it for pdaf support , the lens has to be recognized through software updates. This is to say older E mount cameras that has hybrid AF such as the 5r or the 6 , if they aint getting anymore firmware updates, pdaf wont come into play on these cameras with the newer lenses.

Both lenses should be in similar price range. The difference is in the adapter.

I brought both lenses out for a walk today. I finally understand why the FE zoom is in Kit's dry cabinet. Sony did a very poor standard zoom. I did not notice that the lens is so bad in my first 2 walkabout as I am shooting landscapes and there is no lens to compare with. But once you start shooting straight lines, you will see where it all goes wrong. Sony should issue vouchers to refund those who have bought the lens (like Sigma SD1).This must be the worst Sony/Zeiss lens ever made. Shame on you. tsk tsk tsk.

FE 24-70. 50mm f11. FE stands for Fisheye. Oh yea...I thought I bought a fisheye zoom!!!

EF 24-70. 50mm f11. The above pict is bad enough on its own. Anyway, here is the control pict to show that the building is straight.

Now I am beginning to worry how to stitch pano as the overlaying lines will not be straight.

I think this lens is good to shoot ladies. If positioned properly, the cups will get accentuated. So this is both a travel and portrait lens. Just don't shoot straight lines. Great!

BTW, who has Sony's FE lenses feedback email address. Time to compose nasty emails.

Another set just in case anyone is still not convinced. For those with Canon lenses, just buy an adapter. Seriously.

Start with Canon EF24-70 @ 70mm f16

And now the shocking FE24-70 @ 70mm f16. smlj !!!

Fwah. Is it that bad bro?

well..then don't shoot straight lines :)
I don't have distortion problems at all during my shoots actually..but that's also becuase i dont shoot straight lines and i correct everything in photoshop..
Shoot raw :)
I didn't buy this lens for landscape shooting so i'm not too bothered about distortion...i'm still waiting for the UWA for landscapes

Reason I got the 55f1.8 instead of the zoom other than the speed. All my fast/slow sony zoom lens got bad barrel distortion. The lens correction software works well, but composing time is big headache.

Bro, I hesitate posting the above comments cause I know I will be shooting myself in the foot. In fact you can see my earlier posts are more subtle and expecting lens profile correction. I seriously think we should all petition to Sony for a refund or massive discount vouchers. This is a very poor zoom. Even if you don't shoot straight lens. Your picture may be affected. No point trying to protect its value and resell it asap. We should RTM such lousy lenses. I got very worked up seeing these "straight" lines.

And barrel distortion is not the only issue with this lens.

This is my first Sony zoom. You meant to say all previous A-mount zooms are equally bad?

At the current price of this zoom lens, the quality is not acceptable. Without seeing your sample, didn't know it is that bad.

Was not thinking of buying with the current price. But after seeing your sample shots, can confirm my wallet is safe.

Ya...Dunno whether this can activate lemon law or not? This is obviously a flawed product!

I cannot imagine who would want to buy their new 70-200 and UWA zOOm lenses.

Shoot raw :)

In fact the picts I have posted were from raw files. I have set my A7 to shoot in raw + jpg

I have looked at the jpg files and noticed the distortion is not there. Will post and discuss tomorrow, So hold your horses on comments. Too late now. Need to sleep.
