Sony NEX announced ...

I was looking for a PnS replacement with DSLR performance. Had previously shortlisted to the EPL1 but this NEX really is intriguing. If it had a fast (f/2.8) 20mm prime lens that is flushed to the grip when installed, that would be great but alas, no sensor stabilisation and no built-in flash...Luckily the flash is included but attaching it adds back the bulk. Will it be here by first week of June? I wonder what the street price would be like? :)
Someone posted that NEX3 with 16mm is listed at US$550 that is priced to compete with PnS and with about LX3 size. That is really damn good price point.

Hi azul :)
That would put it around S$750. If we can get a cheaper street price, that would have been great! It would be buy buy to EPL1...;p.

That's just the starting price, I am sure it will get lower soon enough... competition will make sure of that, nonetheless... we now have EVIL worth buying .

Enlighten me.. lower density give better IQ? or lower density means high ISO performer?

Generally for a fixed size sensor, the higher the pixel density, the smaller the pixel, hence more noise will be introduced. But of course, in real life other factors also play a role. Sensor design, integrated noise filters etc. But the pixel density gives you a general basis to compare their potential for high ISO performance. :)

You'll prob have it v soon. At launch the test cameras are already production sets and marketing flyers are out.

My guess is out with plenty of stock by end May. A lot of people are invested in m43 or G11/S90/LX3 already so unless they must have every new toy Sony has to work very hard to sell this. m43 and Sony needs more prime lenses in their lineup though!

I have been hunting for a second hand EPL1 but if the pricing of the Nex is as per US announced prices, then, a brand new Nex3 will even cost less than a second hand EPL1!

Initially, I was under the impression that the Nex looks ugly and bulky but after looking it in more detail, I realised its actually pretty small. I don't need full HD (720p is good enough) and I absolutely have no fetish with the exotic chassis, so the Nex3 looks like my new target.

And unlike all those "Sonyians" screaming for lack of features (because they wanted a mini full-featured DSLR) , I am the EXACT target market that Sony was aiming for. ...someone looking to upgrade his PnS and retain the portability and convenience of an idiot proof camera. And not concerned about focus points, and manual focus and such.
The external flash is a pain though but its included free and its not too intrusive. But I will probably miss the sensor stabilization though. Due in part to size constraints and probably learning from canon, they have chosen to put the IS in the lens which means bulkier and more expensive lenses.

Well whatever the case, they will never be as small as the premium compacts like the Canon S90 or Ricoh GRD3.

Going with the Sony or the Oly/Panny will still mean lugging around the cameras in a small bag at the very least (since we almost never wear jackets in S'pore regularly).

I doubt you will miss sensor stabilisation much, as seen on the GF-1.. a good fast prime will give you more latitutude to shoot at higher shutter speeds, even in lower light. The plus side of having Optical lens stabilisation is that when shooting amatuer video, OIS will give you more usable video if you are handholding the camera especially on the longer telephoto range.

My only concern with the NEX is the supposed lack of dedicated Exposure lock, which means that I'll have to adapt how I use the camera a little more. Not a deal breaker for me though, I'd still be interested to get one as it meets most of the features I want as a hobbyist who is tired of lugging around DSLRs :P

Put me in the interested queue too. HAHAHA!! my only complain is the kit zoom is of low image quality. If Sony can bring out better quality lenses FAST, this is a sure fire, i reckon. Maybe 3 exotic CZ primes for this tiny fellow? 22mm F1.8, 31mm F1.8 & 60mm F1.8 :lovegrin:

Exposure lock is one of those DSLR essential items that have no place in a PnS. I would prefer that it sticks to improving on auto mode. :)

If Sony wants to kick start their version, price needs to be kept low. They are smart to cut corners here and aim for upgrade later when people have committed to the platform.

Maybe the AEL feature can be reprogrammed to another button?

Anyway i think the kit lens is even worse than their bigger bro alpha mount DT 18-55mm. Well, at least maintain a consistent standard. Sony r u listening?:sweat:

No one launches products at the IT show except Sony :)
They consistently have their own huge standalone stand, so if the Nex is available by 10 June, it will be there. But history has shown that whenver new products are released, Singapore gets it very late...:( Lets keep our fingers crossed.

The NEX-3 and NEX-5 are already available in Hong Kong.

NEX-3
售價: HK$4,390 (單鏡套裝) ~ SGP$782
售價: HK$5,390 (雙鏡套裝) ~ SGP$960

NEX-5
