Sony NEX announced ...

that is because the sensor is much bigger...
yeah, i thot so.
i hope Sony has already started working on the lens elements to circumvent this restriction. fingers crossed.

While the NEX5 body is so compact and even smaller than the m43 cameras, it's a real pity the 18-55mm kit lens is so much bigger than the olympus kit lens. Why can't Sony make a similar sized lens? Sigh.

Also, Sony should have gone all the way and use the 360 LCD swivel rather than the half baked tilt LCD. What a pity. Sigh again.

One point to note though, the construction of the 18-55 is superb! I am willing to sacrifice that bit of size for a very good, quality-constructed lens.

have you guys seen this link ?
check out the iso comparison with a gh1, wow technology does move fast.

i think sony did a balance for the size of that huge kit lens. maybe they wanted to retain a big manual focus ring, or maybe they can't downsize it anymore, it's still prolly one of the smaller aps-c lens right, wait must compare to the samsung nx10's one .

im waiting for Sony to get their adaptor working fully. Its supposed to AF with SAM/SSM lenses. Hope they faster get it right, then at least there will be more lenses to use, like the 50mm and 30mm SAM lens which is very light and gives good DOF.

even so, there wouldn't be any SSS or OSS :(

Someone in dyxum tested the adaptor and mentioned that motorised alpha lenses can AF on nex. Even 3rd party motorised lens (he tested sigma 24-70 HSM)

Im guessing that some motorised alpha lenses do work, but not all. Thus to prevent potential complains from customers, sony decided to announce (or even disable af in release firmware) that af is not working yet, until they can get it to work 100%.

Personally i wouldnt mind if it works with only a few lens for now, at least it'll allow nex users more choice.

I could mount the 30mm or 50mm f1.8 on the nex and use it as a portrait camera

wow going to dig pocket again...................:D, is just matter of time......:bheart:

Yes and people are just very jealous of this new sony camera because their favority (other brands) cannot even create something that is even close to the sony technology...
Some have failed due to the noises in iq?
However based on my sites reviews, i find sony nex to be something world changing in camera world.

the adaptor has got no motor key to turn the af mechanism. so it should not be possible to af alpha lenses, right? I suppose they mean af confirmation only?

SAM and SSM lenses have build in motor... they are not screw driven.
