Sony NEX-6 (The "mini NEX-7" about to be announced soon) Thread II

Ettl is not guaranteed to work on nex if the flash is not Sony . This is usually the case. But you can still fire them manually . If you badly need a flash . U can try the manual yongnuo . Cheap and does the job effectively , provided we know what to do with manual flashes .

The older Minolta /Sony mount flashes would require an adapter to work on the newer bodies like a99 and nex6 . For peeps who bought the a99 , the adapter is part of the package.

For peeps who used to own the Minolta to iso show mount converter . U may try to mount it on the nex6 . I would suspect it will still fire off the flash but may be without ttl

i dun need TTL or mount the flash on the hotshoe. i just need a flash that can be remote fire using the built in flash. can F20AM co the job ?

Why not get the YNs? Cheaper, more powerful, and works off camera

dont think the build in flash can trigger any remote flash. u'll need at least the F20A. u can try on ur nex6. go camera settings - flash mode. select WL (wireless) - click ok and u will get a "invalid with this flash"

I can select that when i mount the F20AM

Sony HVL-F20AM Flash
The Sony HVL-F20AM Flash is a very small and compact flash that folds down out of the way on the NEX-7 when not in use. When you need to use it, just rotate it 90 degree’s up and the falls is powered up. Very nice feature. There is a selector to change the flash head to point straight ahead or face straight up to bounce the flash off the ceiling. When the flash is flipped up, it sit’s about 3 inches higher than the camera, which eliminates the shadow of a longer lens. This built-in pop-up flash has this issue. It is nice to have this alternative. Another feature of this flash, is the ability to remote trigger an off camera Sony Flash with full TTL Support. I also own the Sony HVL-F43AM flash, just for off camera flash photography. When used for Wireless trigger the FM20AM Flash is just the commander to the External Flash. This was kind of an expensive upgrade just to be able to remotely trigger my sony Flash. This capability in my opinion should have been built-in to the NEX-7. For this reason, I give Sony a BIG FAT “F” on Flash photography. The idea that I had to spend an additional $150 to get this capability is ridiculous, “Bad move Sony”. Overall I’m very pleased with this flash over the pop-up flash. It has worked very well as a fill-flash outdoors. I never use it indoor’s, only because I use my HVL-43AM Flash fired remotely for indoor photography. Generally I hand hold the HVL-F43AM flash in my left hand at arms length away and slightly higher than my subject aimed at a 45 degree angle to their face or bounce it off a wall if the wall is white or gray.

Metz Mecablitz 44 seems good and able to support Sony.

I would say those lower end Canon or Nikon without manual control won't work on our nex6.
It's tough to find a suitable size flash for our small body since auto E-TTL usually won't comes in compact size.

The YN565 you got from your friend is canon mount right? Would the Nikon mount YN565 work as well? lol.... Talking about size, if the ttl for YN565 can work on NEX6, then what about the YN465? Smaller, and has TTL too... Now, where can I get my hands on them to experiment...

Coming weekend I got a chalet, will borrow from him again and test out more. That day I didn't really play with it much and forgotten to test whether it will auto set the zoom distance, exposure etc according to my camera setting.

my AF selection is only AF-S and AF-C. i read that nex6 has phase detection that has focussing point like DSLR. Did i misunderstand something ?

ok thanks. :)

so how's the Phase Detection? does it really improve the AF alot?

I don't find any difference from my Nex-5 actually.. one question, what does PDAF box do? I read that PDAF is turned on by default based on the lens you mount on the camera.
