So why Sony?

It is purely marketing. No brands are flawless. Each has its own to suit diff people. All three are all equally good in the capable hands. When someone tell is no good that maybe because the lack of knowledge or own non-objective preference or hidden agenda.

I notice Canon has been doing very good marketing, including sponsoring and "paying" people to "sell" their product in schools here. Often those who have stake would say bad about others :)

I choose Sony because I was a satisfied Minolta users, and now a satisfied Sony user. I am sure Canon and Nikon will make me equally happy.

i first bought my A200 because its cheap.
my motive was just to get a DSLR after how many years ive been using PnS.

so i was so happy to have it. after a few weeks. i felt sad.

i felt the regret that i bought an A200. i was thinking i should have bought nikon or canon instead. i even posted to sell off my A200 set at the BNS section.

then came some nice members from clubsnap. they pm'ed me and was asking why i decided to sell. so after much motivtions form the members, i decided to give a second chance.

i went out and shoot and shoot and shoot. and then i realise that actually A200 isnt that bad :D its actually all bout the person behind the camera.

omg. i think ive went out of topic. :D

same same bro.
i also try to sell off
but when i see my photos taken with A200 and Beercan
i was like whoa.
hey thats nice.

so decided to stay on.
;)

all of the underdog brands (olympus, pentax, sony, panasonic) have one big point over nikon and canon.

inbody shake reduction. more value for money across the whole range, in general.

every brand has its pros and cons, there is no need to care what other people think of your brand. i have been using pentax for a while now, i am more than satisfied with it. i have seen beautiful pictures from every camera ever made. if there isn't a lesson in that, then i don't know what else to say.

That's encouraging for me as well, because I also felt that I should have just gotten either C or N. But now posting up some of my pictures, I felt that for what I paid, it's great!

Plus I think why Sony is selling cheap because they want to break in and get some market share of their own, thus with this cheaper set image, people tend to think that they're sub-par

I bought my a200 in oct 15 2008, I always remembered the date as I thought I was cheated by the sales person. I went to the shop (BESd IMM), planned to buy nikon D60, I didn't know anything about dslr, I don't even know that nikon lenses can't be used on canon. Anyway, the sales person finally succeeded in convince me to by a200 with 2 kit lenses, which were sold 3 months later for 200 bulks.

anyway, after trying some KM lenses, I found a lot of fun with my a200. I consider myself: I am using original lenses with third party camera body :)

Oh? A200 can use KM mount?

Oh? A200 can use KM mount?

of course bro, all the af km lenses can be used on sony, and sony af lenses can be used on some Minolta film camera. ;)

Sony has been my choice for all my home products ... Sony LCD, PS3, Home System, Sony VAIO, Sony HD Cam, Sony XPLOD car system, Sony Handphone W580, Sony PNS (I got Lumix also though) and of cos my Sony A300 ... the quality and design are the main attraction to me.

Though Sony is proprietary most of the time, I have never regrets on any of their products =)

Of coz, the photos I taken for my baby from my Sony A300, never fails to capture the moment for me.

woo. i love this thread. it just makes me feel that Sony is really good. :D

Having use the Minolta SLR like the 7xi & Dynax 7, felt the AF speed, STF mode, low-lght focusing etc etc are just great :)
Even Dynax 7D which is 5 years old still perform to a very decent standard comparing with the recent DSLR so I felt Sony have plenty to offer in time to come :)

Then comes the Minolta APO & G lenses.....great colour and bokeh.
It's Minolta that makes me a Sony user and that remain unchange even with all the Zeiss lenses.

I can say I was exposed to Nikon previously before I decided to take a leap of faith into Sony camp, especially I got influenced by an a700 +CZ16-80.

But for now, I can only afford a200 + Tamron 17-50

My friends ask me why Sony? I told them it's because of the built-in IS, which would be much relevant for me as a newbie? =D

Most importantly, learn to exploit the strengths and overcome its weaknesses! That said, I am still on my way to the nirvana... =D

There's some bashing on the net about Sony's SSS system, about how it might get outdated if there are future updates while for C and N users can stay updated even though they're using a very old system. =/

Hi, bro, I am definitly a Minolta fan. Planning to buy a 2nd hand dynax 7d next month when travel to Hongkong, some csers said there is a building there selling all 2nd cameras. the 7d is 6mp and sensor is same as a200 right? ccd camera? How about the noise reduction?

I chose Sony because of the Minolta DNA in the system itself and the developmental potential of the entire system. Minolta was the state of the art during the film days, and many of its technologies are unique, and some of them yet unsurpassed/matched by competing systems (STF, for example).

There are very few manufacturers on this planet with two premium lines of lenses offering different optical characteristics - it's very different from companies that offers versions of the same lens: "Got Sonic Motor, No Sonic Motor, Got IS, No IS." In Sony's case, you get two very different schools of optical performances, as well as different colour qualities straight off the camera.

I choose my lenses from the KM / G line, and thus I can retain a colour consistency throughout my entire focal length coverage.

Likewise, someone using Sony / CZ line would have a very different look and feel to their photos too.

As for both lines of lenses, the implementation of IS in the body ensures longevity and usability of the much older glasses. Older glass designs to seasoned shooters mean photos with character. Camera bodies get obsolete, but it's the glass that gives the photos part of the characteristic and part of the soul as well. The implementation of such things on the body helps ensure that the glassware stay usable and relevant in light of the newer designs of today.

As cameras themselves: The A100 is a very functional machine for an entry level - (as followed by A200, and eventually A230.) The overall usability and interface is a very important criteria for me, the Sony A700/A900 fits the bill just right, and are work great as Photographer's Cameras.

Minolta was every bit as good as Canon and Nikon, just not the marketing portion. Pentax and Olympus both make awesome machines, but they don't market as widely, why not give those brands a shot? People listen to what their friends recommend, and marketing and exposure is part of the process, and marketing DSLRs are in a way an art form in itself, and user endorsement is a big part of it. Brands that have a great user bases. So with Minolta Legacy passed onto Sony, I do hope they do better in that respect.

Fate's brought me together with Sony and KM, it could have as easily brought me to the other brands, but I'm glad that it did. ;)

Seriously, let them bash all they want. A lot of foreigners bash Singapore on a daily basis, and if you think about it objectively, they could be right. But heck, it's a place I'm going to stick with. Sony? Is it the best? Maybe the truth is, it's not. Noise control not good, expensive lenses, blah blah blah (However, I don't get the logic about SSS being outdated. Eh??).

Like I said, it's just a tool. I really don't care about the nitty-gritty details; I'm more concerned about improving my composition and technique and my creative eye. Maybe one fine day if some brand can create a camera that operates via telepathy and can re-create my artistic vision through a mind-meld, I'd go for that. In the meanwhile, they can have their L-lenses and whatnot and I will shoot with a Sony and we all can just drink kopi and watch football on tv instead of comparing whose pen!s is bigger/better (it's almost the same thing).

And oh, btw, last time when the Minolta Service Centre was at Funan, I always like to go there to beo the chio counter-girl. When I went to Nikon or Canon svc centre, it was a different story.

In body SSS system can improve with every new camera body... Update? Just change body. your favourite glasswares can stay.

Lens IS sticks with the lens: Update? It's not cheap to change your entire lens line up. ;)

Very funny indeed, i have always noticed camera bodies get updated more frequently than lenses itself...so who has the most updated technology is very clear right...

Agreed bro...

Cameras to Photographers are like are Brushes to Artists. Having Picasso's brush doesn't mean you can't paint like Picasso. :sweatsm:

I don't see why there is a reason to fret too much, let them say it, concentrate on making photos is what I'd do. If the fate is states that you get acquainted with Sony (or any other brand for that matter), and you like it, if it works for you - it works for you. ;)

SSC operates 7 days a week. Not sure if C and N operates it's service centres on as many days, but it's a perk that you can drop off your equipment on the free day of your week.

I personallly like portrait photog and I guess Sony is the only system that give me image stablizing for all prime lens that i'm using. Plus their range of CZ lens, i dont think Sony is any more inferior than C and N.
