Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Users

I think It's normal, I have it too... a soft 'de' sound, maybe is the OS HSM cut off it's power when idle :bsmilie:

same here. i also think it is normal.

Me too. I tot that some nuts have gone loose, then did i realised it could be the OS idling. Not much concern.

thanks everyone confirm about the OS idling sound......really enjoy using this lens, F8 to F11 can get really sharp image but only things is a bit on the heavy side.

I hope someone hasn't posted this!

I'm considering between the 18-200 and 18-250, but for the price difference, I wanna check on two things:

Does anyone have any idea what is the lowest fstop the 18-250 will go at 200mm? Is it also 6.3 like the 18-200 Sigma or around 5 plus?

Is the extra 50mm really necessary if you're say...the kind who love taking stage event photos, I'm not a nature person so no bird shots for me, so I can't relate to the photos I see here although they are BEAUTIFUL! =)

Thanks!

Hi Andrew, for this 18-250mm lens, the F-stop at 200mm is F6.3 :) u can consider this 18-200mm, if u dun really need the extra 50mm... that can help u to save a bit, just make sure u r comparing with the right model. So far there r 3 model for this 18-200mm... If im not wrong, the latest one come with the Hyper Sonic Motor.

For more info abt this 18-200mm lens, you can chk with ekardo here: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533880

HSM? That sure is new, Yeah I got a much lower quote, nearly 300 bucks lower for the 18-200 so I was wondering if I really needed it.

Thanks a lot for the info! I was especially concerned about the F-stop more cause if the F-stop on the 250mm lens is lower at 200, then it seriously has quite an edge compared to the 18-200 besides zoom capability.

Cheers!

I bought one too abt 2mths ago & was very excited abt it. I'm using canon 450D body. But I'm pretty disappointed the the pic quality isn't sharp, more on the softer side. I'm not sure if you experience the same thing?

Mine looks fine. Did you try shooting at higher f-stops, e.g. f8 and more?

You can also bring the lens alonside your DSLR down to the service center for them to recalibrate too.

Anybody has idea how much is it now?

Thanks

More comments on the lens: mine is the Nikon mount. I've been using the lens for a couple of weeks now, and:

- The lens barrel has loosened quite a bit. It used to be stiff and hard to turn, but it's much easier now. It's not completely loose though, and I still require slightly more force to turn it from 150mm onwards to 250mm.

- The lens is sexy and complements the size of the D300 well, and distributes weight nicely between front of lens and end of body.

- Lens is sharp for me as far as my eyes can tell. Handheld shots at low light is aided by optical stabilization and I can usually get reasonably sharp images at speeds of 1/10 to 1/15 of up till 180mm or so.

On the other hand...

- Lens sometimes has difficulty autofocusing in low contrast situations, and certainly more than the Nikon 55-200m lens it replaced. This may be a major issue for interested users, so make sure you try it out thoroughly before plonking your $$$.

Wah the price is still 900-ish..
Hopefully Sigma will come out with new lenses so this price will become lesser :)

For it range n price is still a lot cheaper then canon n nikon lenses. :)

eventhough sigman is 18-250mm .. it is still fair to compare it with canon 18-200 .. as the 50mm more is not gonna be that important as compared to focus speed and IQ..

 Well okay... if u were to compared it this way.

Anyway, diff ppls had diff taste. Just stick to what you think is gd n worth the price that you're paying... in the end is your money, your decision.

Cheer!
