just posting here some info for anyone who is thinking of buying this lens
i'm still a newbie so no technical assessments here
got the lens for about almost a month now and here's my short review on it
i'm using a canon 500d so the sigma turns in the correct way for me
pros:
1) good image quality (in my opinion) throughout zoom range even at the wide and telephoto ends. this is contrary to some of the reports. lens flare is well controlled and images are sharp
2) autofocus: fast AF and pretty quiet
3) bokeh: bokeh is quite smooth when the lens is wide open
4) solid construct
cons:
1) weight: pretty heavy compared to my kit lens (18-55mm). needs some getting used to
2) zoom creep: especially at the 55-135mm range. nevertheless, there is a zoom lock that works only at 18mm
3) optical stabilization: inferior to canon (even at the same zoom range). hands definitely need to be more steady or use a tripod.
4) autofocus: so far i have not experienced any front/back focusing problems but AF is a major problem at low contrast situations. got to change to MF occasionally or what i do sometimes is focus first on an area (which is at about the same distance) with better contrast before getting my shot. also, the lens does not allow MF when set at AF mode which is not much of a problem for me since i rarely use MF.
5) zoom and focusing rings: seem to be made of a material that attracts dust
6) lens body has a coating that appears easily chipped off
overall:
this is a pretty value for money lens (got it at about 940 after GST) with acceptable image quality. personally, i feels the problems with regard to inferior OS, zoom creep and lens body coating are minor. the biggest problem with this lens is definitely going to be the poor AF especially in low contrast/night conditions (which is the same problem that the tamron has). nevertheless, this is still a good travel lens although i'll probably bring along a prime lens with low f-stop esp for night shooting
