Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Users

just a question , has anyone been able to order this in taiwan or overseas at a cheaper price?

Anyone able to help get one? maybe a mass order could bring the price down further

i got mine from USA when i was there a month ago, got it for about 715 sgd, with 1 year international warranty.

whoaa! great shots + lens  that made me think of 3rd lenses now...hmmnnn:think:

just posting here some info for anyone who is thinking of buying this lens
i'm still a newbie so no technical assessments here ;)

got the lens for about almost a month now and here's my short review on it
i'm using a canon 500d so the sigma turns in the correct way for me

pros:
1) good image quality (in my opinion) throughout zoom range even at the wide and telephoto ends. this is contrary to some of the reports. lens flare is well controlled and images are sharp
2) autofocus: fast AF and pretty quiet
3) bokeh: bokeh is quite smooth when the lens is wide open
4) solid construct

cons:
1) weight: pretty heavy compared to my kit lens (18-55mm). needs some getting used to
2) zoom creep: especially at the 55-135mm range. nevertheless, there is a zoom lock that works only at 18mm
3) optical stabilization: inferior to canon (even at the same zoom range). hands definitely need to be more steady or use a tripod.
4) autofocus: so far i have not experienced any front/back focusing problems but AF is a major problem at low contrast situations. got to change to MF occasionally or what i do sometimes is focus first on an area (which is at about the same distance) with better contrast before getting my shot. also, the lens does not allow MF when set at AF mode which is not much of a problem for me since i rarely use MF.
5) zoom and focusing rings: seem to be made of a material that attracts dust
6) lens body has a coating that appears easily chipped off

overall:
this is a pretty value for money lens (got it at about 940 after GST) with acceptable image quality. personally, i feels the problems with regard to inferior OS, zoom creep and lens body coating are minor. the biggest problem with this lens is definitely going to be the poor AF especially in low contrast/night conditions (which is the same problem that the tamron has). nevertheless, this is still a good travel lens although i'll probably bring along a prime lens with low f-stop esp for night shooting

Vry nice shots! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

hi... thanks for e comments... still learning though... :bsmilie:

but now im quite busy with exam, so no time to snap... maybe after my exam, i'll post a few more better photos... hahaha...

cheers... nice lens anyway... go for it... ;p

Interested if there is a mass order... =)

I just got mine delivered today and there seems to be a distinct rattle when i pick up the lens ...... has anybody else experienced this ?

Not for my copy. Mine looks like a brick, feels like a brick, and gives out no noise when I give it a bit of a shake.

I think I need to go to the service centre to get them to take a look at it.

Yah mine doesn't have any rattle noise even with slight shake as well.

Now that I've used the lens for a few months now and have taken close to one thousand pictures on it, the lens has really grown on me - so much that I hardly ever swap it for another lens in general photography. Initially I found the AF misbehaving every one in 5-6 tries, but have found that it's isolated only when I use spot-focusing. In multipoint focusing, it works reliably.

The lens is indeed heavy tho.

Yes ordered from amazon It just arrived today.

I will take to Sigma on Wednesday to have a look

Its now with the service centre in Redhill

They told me that parts is ok but as I bought from overseas I would have to pay labour costs..... has anybody else come across this before ?

First time I've heard of it. One of my Sigma lenses I bought from Amazon last year had focusing issues correction done by the service center at no cost to me. They did initially fuss a bit about honoring their warranty, but relented after I insisted.

I recently bought it to replace my Canon 55-250mm IS lenses. All the pictures I shot with it were hand held and the OS system performed flawlessly. It is fast and quiet. The zoom action is quite precise though smoothness varies over the range... understandable for a 13.9:1 zoom range! It shows virtually no play when fully extended. Also, I've checked its macro ability, and found it to be approx. 1:2.5, far better than Sigma's very conservative spec. Very highly recommended!!!!

Sorry i ask something out of this thread, How much is the delivery charges from amazon?

I didn't ship it direct from Amazon to SG as Amazon does not ship camera lenses directly to here. It went through Vpost. Can't remember for certain how much it cost as it's been > a year, but I think it probably was around $35 to $40.
