Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM

No need to check 17-50mm have 2 version. $1110 for F2.8 EX DC OS HSM, and $720 for 2.8 MACRO.
By the way, how do you hold the lens while shooting if the Focus Ring moves during AF?

Dun hold too near the focus ring. That's the only down side which I can live with...

That I can live with. What irritates me of this otherwise fine lens is that the zoom ring is too near the bottom and turns I the same direction as the release of the lens. So while trying to remove the lens from the camera you may also be turning the zoom ring.

Haha, I seldom remove it... It's kinda "attached" to my cam body.

Not sure if anyone have experience with this lens in low light focusing...I heard that Tamron 17-50 hunts alot in low light. How does the Sigma fare in this area?

Currently, I guess this bit is one of the deciding factor if I should go Tamron or Sigma....

not sure abt that. the reason for my choice was bcoz the tammy's VC will "shake" the lens (thus the view) once AF lock... kinda distracting.

Sry, bumping this up again....

Does any of the owners faced the battery drain issue caused by the OS? What I've read is that Sigma's OS will be activated the moment you on the camera and will only stop after a minute of idle.

Still sitting on the fence... it's either a Tamron Non VC or Sigma (If I'm going to consider a Sigma, I may also consider a 2nd hand 17-55)

No notice of such issue. In anyway, my cam goes to standby after 1 min. I think the consumption is negligible in this case. Go to a shop and try out both copies. I recommend u to chk out Manly Department Store at China town area. They got the best quote for both Tammy and Sigma local set.

Thanks. I believe the only thing left to do is to hit the stores and test the hell out of these lens....Been bothered by this question for sometime liao (the price vs usage equation denies me from getting the Sigma. While the low light focusing turns me away from Tamron).

Yup. Notice the Tammy shake upon focus lock when vc deployed.

Canon 17-55 is easily 1.1k? We talking abt used piece. Sigma is also that price for a new local set. Alternatively, dde sells it at 800. Rarely u find a used sigma. Tammy vc new is 730 now!! but the stiff zoom ring, relatively noisy focus n shaking puts me off. I paid additional 70 n got mine from dde with option to purchase Mack 7-yr warranty for $49.

Yes, I do know that a 2nd hand 17-55 is abt the same as a new local set Sigma. Further readings indicates that the IS tends to breakdown quite "easily" (I don't know what those folks online did to their 17-55)

DDE selling it at 800++ but is considered "grey" as the warranty is covered by them(DDE) only...as for how well they honor the repair/warranty is also an unknown to me ....Also, I don't think this warranty covers calibration which is aprox $150. Even if they do, I believe it will be shipped back to the country of origin for weeks then return...

So, the diff here between a local set is abt 300, for which you get 2.5yr Sigma warranty vs 7yr DDE warranty @ $300 cheaper than local set. I'm not trying to slam DDE's warranty, just that I have yet to really come across reviews about them on the warranty part (or those that I've read is more towards -ve).

btw, currently Tamron 17-50 series is somehow out of my list...the scary stories I heard about the build is enough already. Issues range from loose/broken front element while removing hood to broken zoom ring... I'm referring to the Non-VC version, for the price vs performance point, it's the best, but the build issues that comes after it gives me a heart attack. If I'm going for the VC version, I might as well pick Sigma over it.

Well, u can take your time to test the lens at dde to your liking. They even got a focus chart ready for u.

My previous sigma lens also from them and both are sharp from the box! Dun understand te hype... The point that u have not hrd anything abt their warranty goes to show that ppl are not complaining! No news is gd news. Bearing in mind that their biz are mostly online, the likelihood for online ranting is high is their Svc is unacceptable.

I'm a happy customer of theirs. Alternatively, u can chk out technogadgets. PM me if u decided to get a local set. I know a place to get it at abt 1k. Cheapest I sourced so far. End of the day, I think it's the $200 that's holding us back. FYI, this lens is less infamous for it's focusing issue compared to the 30mm and 50mm primes.

Yes, I'm aware that this Sigma lens is notorious for it's front/back focusing...I will really be testing the lens carefully if I really drop by to grab it.

Thanks for the offer :) But I've already got the quotes from the "standard" recommended shops already, thou may not be the cheapest, but the reputation of those shops put one heart at ease (mine at least).

*actually, it's not the $200 (grey vs local) holding me back..it's the $500++ price gap between the Tamron and Sigma that is  $500 for better plastic build and OS*

I dun think it's juz the plastic and the vc. The lens construction is also different.

haha, of course. Just that to amateurs like me, that will probably be the brief description for the premium.

*On a second thought, I may also stick out with the rest of equipment for the next couple of shoots to see how important is this focal length (didn't like the whole idea of going BBB frenzy). Once a while, I will shoot with 1 lens only, to "appreciate" it. Thou I must say that I liked my Kit 18-55, other than the evening/night performance which I have to bump my ISO.*

Thanks for the input Roger!

Dun say lidat... I also newbie... Looking at your equipment list (from the signature), you seems pretty well "covered" in terms of reach and different shooting situation. Only thing is to bring most of them out during shoot. For me, I am more of a casual hobbyist. Do not want to bring so many things with me when I'm out on a trip or on a special occasion. Thus the 17-50 F2.8 is important.

I can only say that I have sacrificed my "convenient" of 18-200 for the 17-50 F2.8 with no regret. The IQ and low light capability far exceed the ability to reach further. Now I carry a light 55-250 during outing with possiblity of outdoor shots. I think ya 50 F1.8 can compensate low light situation? Maybe get the 30mm if u find the FOV a bit tight.

I'm also more like a casual hobbist, which is one of the reason why I don't want to blow too much on lens(es)...In fact, if Tamron's build is better, I would have considered it instead due to cost.

I quite like the covered range of 10 up to 250. Other than my 50mm (which I think is just the bbb virus), all other lens have quite "specific" usages in my shooting...Currently the 50mm is used for my indoor "product" shoot.

Regarding the 50 f/1.8, because most of the time when I call for it's service for use in low light, I noticed that I don't have lots of moving space (E.g. at restaurant dining tables, Indoor HDB room) where 50mm on my crop can be quite/very tight (may work with shooting babies). I've yet to really take it outdoors for shooting...will try it one of these days when I go flower shooting.

The ideal setup which I have in mind
- 10-22 (doubt I will be letting this one go)
- 17-50 or 18-55 (walkaround & casual gathering events) + Flash (If my kit 18-55 didn't go down, I may have added a 30 1.4 to my list)
- 18-200 (travel use) If i happen to get this, I will sell my 55-250

- 90 or 100 Macro (maybe? probably will just stick to Raynox with 55-250 or 18-200)
- 30 f1.4 (If my 17-50 fits the my needs, I won't need this)
