Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM

hmm seems that this is a rather good lens... but i wonder how does this compares optically with Canon L lenses??? i am a current 17-50 non vc user, which lens should consider to replace my 17-50? looking at 24-105 and also 24-70L...

When i had my 60D, i had the sigma 17-50 and canon 24-105L. After testing both lenses, i sold away the 24-105L, reason being i have no intention to go FF in near future and sigma is better with 17mm and f2.8.

Sharpness and contrast wise, i realise both are around the same, with sigma matching the centre sharpness at even f2.8 compared to f4 for the L.

Of course, if everyone wants to really find fault with the sigma to "protect" the prestige L, the the absent of FTM focusing from sigma is one minus point.

Focus speed wise is about the same.

Though at the really edge of the frame, the L does it better.

For me, it doesnt matter, as long as centre-mid frame is sharp.

Its currently the new cream of the Crop imo.

Finally bit the bullet and went to get myself the 17-50..haven't really gone out to shoot with it yet but i was comparing it to the 17-55 Canon for 30mins in the shop..specs wise the 2 are too close..of cos the LCD can't really tell IQ but i trust that they are too close to call too from the various online reviews..HSM i feel is a tad slower than the USM and a little noisier..when focusing the Sigma produces a faint "tud tud" sound where as the Canon is really very silent..i was seriously considering getting the Canon instead but the extra $500 just puts me off..i can get the 85mm with that difference..

The unit i bought is sharp out of the box..used a focus chart and everything seems nice..like i mentioned HSM is good though not as awesome as canon's USM..as for the OS i could slow shutter to 1/15s on handheld and get a sharp picture so i guess it's not that bad..bokeh is awesome on f2.8..build quality is quite good too and everything feels solid but of cos not L standard..all in all i guess it's a very good piece of glass!

Mostly will be using it as a more general purpose lens and shoot some informal events..hope it'll serve me well!

Dun forget the local 2.5yrs warranty.

For Sigma I'll recommend local set, calibration need $150 service charge for it as some members here had paid for non local set.

You may want to do your maths & consider it.

SIGMA Lens is much good in term of IQ with average price between Canon and Tamron.

I will go for it SIGMA.

Hey guys,

I'm about to get a Nikon D7000 and was weighing up options between the Tamron 17-50 (non VC), this Sigma & the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 for my workhorse lens. By the look of it, the Sigma is a good middle ground of getting sharpness, faster and quieter AF lock and has a decent build quality to boot. Though there have been reports of QC issues on some batches of the Sigma.

Just wondering if anyone out there has had real world usage experience between this Sigma and the Nikon 17-55 f2.8? Nikon doesn't have VR, but if I'm not mistaken the Nikon has superior AF speed and edge sharpness, but I'd want to know in real world applications/shooting is the IQ really that far to justify the >2 times price of the Sigma for the Nikon?

Oh & I almost forgot, there's mention of no FTM, so that means this sigma lacks the ability to fine tune focus manually when the lens is in AF mode?

This is a super sharp lens even compared to the Canon 17-55 F2.8 that I own before

I brought this lens after I find that Canon 17-55 cannot meet the requirement as I pay so much?
There is focusing issue when I am taking the far object and CSC cannot solved this
So I change to this Sigma and its inspired me straight out from the box !
