Sightings of the new NEX 7

gonna buy it at the IT show though. lots of things to buy :bsmilie:

Have been doing some low light testing between 5N and 7 for the past few days.

Not professional method though, its my method. :)

Initial observation seems 7 is on par with 5N all the way up till iso3200 where 5N has slightly better IQ from iso6400 onwards.

White balance wise, 7 is more accurate and neutral while 5N is slightly warmer when set to auto for both.

Will try post some comparison shots if got time. :)

Overall, i would say 7 has around same IQ as 5N but has definitely better external controls and ergonomics and handling.

I've been doing some comparisions myself. While the IQ is similar, the 5N definitely has the edge on certain lenses, such as Zeiss ZM. Also, the 7's ability to crop given 24MP and the ability to preserve detail is just incredible (and also the 16-20MB JPEGs).

I found one 1700 including GST and no freebies... is that decent? Picking it up later today

from which shop?

From Alan Photo in Funan. No lens... no nothing... just the boxed camera without kit. Included GST refund. I had to leave today to go to Ambon diving for 3 weeks... I figured it was worth it :D
Keep in mind that you MUST charge the batt fully first time before use or it wont even format your card or show you a battery indicator symbol.... I almost freaked out. LOL

Peaking is AWESOME. Easy to use even with my massive SIgma 50-500 OS in Nikon mount with Novoflex adaptor! ;)

I am just at sony days, no stock on nex 7 at all

Sony days quoted me 1999 for body plus kit, 1799 for body only. There's a demo set to try there.

Did you confirm that its the special Black lens kit and not the silver one ? Just concerned they give you a body set with a silver lens

I'm a noob interested to get a Mirrorless SLR. What kind of kit are they offering SEL1855? Is it worth getting the kit lens or should one go for lenses from Carl Zeiss.

To be honest, the performance of the kit lens is alright if you don't buy any other lens (hey, there's lots of folks who buy a DSLR and just parade around with the one kit lens and treat it as a big PNS)

Thou once you buy a Zeiss 24 mm and the upcoming 50F1.8, I doubt you'll use the kit lens again

Had a bit more time playing around with the Nex7 yesterday, hence, a bit more update on my user experience...

ISO1600 and above - based on OOC jpegs, 5N has the edge in the "low-light shaded areas". Hopefully, Sony can improve this via firmware update. Will try to see what raw files can produce using LR3 when i have time.

ISO adjustment - I can understand that 3/5/C3/5N doesnt have iso settings in 1/2 or 1/3 steps since its targeting the more general consumers. But this the the "pro" Nex, i really hope Sony can provide this function via firmware update. I would like to shoot at as-low-as possible iso in low light situations.

Tri-navi - This is fantastic. The amount of things you can adjust is so much that i got lost in the beginning. This is so ironic as i always wanted more. However, the tri-navi is not fully customisable. Meaning, if you are in the default mode and using Aperture priority shooting mode, the top left dial is fixed at aperture setting, while the control wheel that is common across all Nex is adjusting iso. As i am so used to the nex3/5N, i kept adjusting the wrong settings. In the long run, i will again prefer Sony to be able to provide full customisation of the dials via firmware update. For example, when in aperture-priority shooting mode, i can assign aperture setting to the control wheel. This is good for people like me that owns several nex. If the settings are different, its like using a different camera. in this case, i rather use a different brand since i will likely be able to remember/realise the difference when using a different camera.

I used shot up to 3200 after noise reduction in LR3. Very usable. OOC JPG files are either too noisy or not very sharp. Agree with you about the ISO settings. Would be nice to have smaller steps. Anyway, NEX-7 is still on 1.0 firmware. Let's see what Sony provides with the next update. I see that the A77 already got quite a few updates and hopefully the NEX-7 will get some improvements

tried it in SONY day SUNTEC yestrday, handling is better, and yea, the dual dial is fabulous!
body only price - 1699SGD. the 18-55 kit lens in black looks nice too.

Yeah I used to think so too... after using the 18-55mm and then the Zeiss 24 mm, I have to say the black Zeiss looks and performs a heck of a lot better! ;)
