Sharing a shot of the recent new find for the Singapore Butterfly Checklist .

This butterfly on first glance looks similar to the Drupadia ravindra moorei (Common Posy) and Drupadia theda thesmia (Dark Posy). However it is much smaller than the the two , and there are differentiating markings and color under close scrutiny to identify it as the Drupadia rufotaenia rufotaenia (Pygmy Posy).

It is a tree top butterfly and spend most its time at canopy level, hence not surprising that it is rarely encountered, it's close resemblance to its 2 cousins also likely for the untrained eyes to pass it off as just another common posy.

First recorded 1999 in the Central Catchment Area (CCA) and not seen again till 6 years later when Mr Chan Soon Chye shot a specimen at the western edge of the CCA in March 2005.

In May 2006 Mr Richard Ong shot a suspect at Bukit Batok Nature Park (BBNP) and again in June 06 shot a pristine specimen , and subsequently its ID was confirmed as Drupadia rufotaenia rufotaenia (Pygmy Posy) .

The recent encounter was by Mr Khew SK at CCA in early Aug 07 , and from field shots taken it appears that there are a few of them around.

From these records and over a span of 8 years ,it can be safely say that this recent addition to the Singapore Butterfly Checklist is indeed doing well.

(The above were reinforced with more facts from ButterflyCircle's Archives on 15th Aug 07)

These 2 shots was recorded on 12 Aug 2007 at the Central Catchment area.

Thanks Bluesteel. Your butterfly shootings is more enjoyable :)

I took this photo of a similar butterfly at Lornie trail. Should be " Common Posy" ?

Andy,

You have shot a Drupadia ravindra moorei (Common Posy).

I have a small composite here to compare the subtle differences of the 3 Drupadia species.

Cheers!

Sharing a rather rare butterfly that inhabits our Central Catchment Area. Its under surface is of various shades of brown and very well camouflaged amongst the dry leaves on the jungle floor.

In most encounters , after being disturbed by your presence in the deep undergrowth, you would have seen just a flash of its beautiful blue upper wing after which it disappears from sight, leaving you standing there wondering what flashed by!

It was my good fortune to have encountered recently in the CCA, not one but two specimens of this butterfly that were co-operative after a passing shower.

That is a killer of an Autumn Leaf with a nice smooth background to boot!!

Simply love the clarity and fine details captured, the contrast of the butterfly, perch and the green background make this a super image.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful image!

You're doing very well for a newbie to macro and butterfly shooting, Ally!

#6 is a Taiwan Tree Nymph (Idea leuconoe clara). Though it looks very similar to the Mangrove Tree Nymph (Idea leuconoe chersonesia), the latter is a very rare mangrove butterfly known only from an offshore island of Singapore.

#7 is a Blue Glassy Tiger (Ideopsis vulgaris macrina). The distinguishing markings are just visible in your shot.

#8 is a Chocolate Pansy as you've suspected. The hindwings of this specimen that you've shot is badly torn - probably due to an attack by a predator.
