I hope you do not mind me adding some butterflies from the UK to this thread.:dunno:

This butterly (Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui) is seen in most of the world although those in some continents are variations.
The butterfly arrives across the sea from South Europe, usually in June. It spreads further north, through the British Isles, laying eggs as it goes. The offspring will be seen on the wing through to October.

A second generation Painted Lady.

These belong to the family Nymphalidae.

Peter,

You are most welcome to post your shots here!

Yes ! The Painted Lady is one breath-taking butterfly and a great traveller, we had recorded it twice here in Singapore in recent years.

The Painted Lady visit Singapore.

Thank you for your reply and also the very interesting link:). I tried to leave a comment but failed:dunno:.

We always look for the arrival of these migrants in June and most years we are pleased to receive them. Two years ago, so many arrived at Portsmouth that they were seen on almost every shrub and flowering plant wher they rested and fed before continueing further north. Some stayed but the majority continued their migratory path. A wonderful sight to witness. It is thrilling to learn of their visit to Singapore:thumbsup:

I thought I would show you the Red Admiral (Vanessa Atlanta) that we see in Europe. This will allow you to compare this butterfly from continents thousands of miles apart. This compares with the excellant image of the Indian Red Admiral posted by Bluesteel yesterday.

This butterfly is, like the Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), a migrant species. They do however hibernate in sheltered places and I have seen them on the wing, on warm sunny days, even in February. The population of this beautiful butterfly does however rely on the influx of migrants to boost the population.

It is amazing to see the butterflies we both share when we are so far apart in distance:).
